Ed Davis

I have watched more than 250 college games this year and I can definitely say that Ed Davis is the 3rd most impressive player behind Blake Griffin and Hasheem Thabett. I think this guy is going in the top five if he comes out this year.

Ed Davis

No doubt. Roy's been trying to hide Ed all year, stacking him behind soft as Charmin Deon Thompson. You can't hide Ed!

I'd use a lottery pick on him this year.

I would too, in a couple

I would too, in a couple years he will be a very good player. He is already solid in his freshman year.

Davis

I don't think he would be a top 5 pick this year but I doubt he would get out of the lottery. I love Ed Davis and believe he has a great chance at being the best pro player on this UNC team however he needs to come back and develop next year as one of the go-to guys on the team. All year Davis has reminded me of Al Horford, I just compared numbers of the two players in their first year of college ball and they are almost identical. Both players are listed at 6'10, Davis weighed in at 215 while Horford was listed at 245, however I believe that was his weight his Junior year and final season at UF, Davis will continue to work in the weight room and add extra muscle to his frame so I suspect he will bulk up over the next few years. As a freshman Davis averaged 19 minutes/ game, as a freshman Horford averaged 23 minutes/ game, Davis averaged 6.5 ppg and pulled down 6.5 rbg while Horford 5.6 ppg and 6.5 rbg, Davis also averaged .4 steals and 1.8 blocks while Horford averaged .8 steals and 1.6 blocks. Those numbers are almost identical across the board. Horford was able to continuously improve his game over his three seasons at Florida before ultimately winning back to back championships and becoming the #3 overall pick in the draft, I expect Davis to return next season, greatly improve his game and enter the draft next season where he will likely be a top 5-10 pick.

Davis & Horford

Interesting post, and good comparison.

Ed very well may go back to school, but he shouldn't have to. Might as well get the clock running on the rookie contract, and with the uncertainty regarding the labour contract I would cash in. This is not a strong draft.

If he hadn't have been playing with 3 other NBA players (Ellington, H-Brough, and Lawson), and one borderline NBA player (Green) - not to mention playing behind a vastly inferior player in Thompson - he could've shined like Bosh in his freshman year.

I think there should be more buzz around this kids game.

has the makings of a great college player

Ed Davis doesn't seem like that kind of kid. He is the best example of seeing the benefits of comming back at Carolina, from most of the starting lineup. He can come back, and get all the accolades and hype of a dominant Carolina Big, without the consistent white guy hate and pro bashing because nobody doubts his potential. He is extremely raw offensively, needs to work on his hands and handling and overall offensive feel. Unless he somehow gets Marvin Williams hype I dont see him making the jump yet. He will be back, as a beast comming back to lead a young freakishly long and talented Carolina team. Sound familiar? Oh yeah, they might get John Wall too. I bet things look pretty nice for him, Wayne Ellington rides the momentum into the mid 20s comfortably, opens up a scholarship for a scoring guard for 1 year. Carolina is really winnning big time right now.

ED has a big......

Ed has a big upside but needs at least one more year at Carolina. Lets see if he puts on some weight and polishes his moves a lil more in the off season. I hope he comes back and shows everybody that he can be productive as the main focus on the team. But whenever he goes to the NBA will be sucessful on the next level!

He is very good, but he

He is very good, but he needs to add weight.
The one flaw that i see is he has no right hand, in the post he'll turn into a defender just to use his left hand instead of turning away and hitting a right hand hook, if he wants to improve, he needs to start using both hands and gain a little weight.

weight and range

These are things that can be added at the next level, though.

I do agree with those that say there is some benefit to having the experience of being the "go-to-guy" at the college level.

Sure, he has said he's coming back, but lots of kids say that in the championship glow. When he and his father take a look at it I think they'll see he's a top-10 pick THIS year. We'll see, I don't think this is over.

ed davis

He has so much potential, he is definately the best pro prospect on UNC's team this year. He is an incredible athlete who does everything(rebounding, shooting, shot blocking) at the tallest point of his jump. Look at him to average about 17 points 10 boards and 3 blocks next year before being a lottery pick in the draft.

Yea, Deon Thompson is soft

As I'm writing this post he just turned over his right shoulder and shot another terrible fadeaway jumper. This is his one offensive move, and a tremendously weak/soft one at that.

His efg% was below 50% despite all the fast break dunks and open lay-ups he got from playing with four NBA players.

His offensive rebounding and block percentage are so far below Ed's it's not even funny.

Roy tried to hide Ed behind a vastly inferior player and it looks like he may have been succesful in the end. He got his championship and he'll get Ed back for another year.

(FTR, I'm using efficiency stats from Pomeroy's site).

Tyrus Thomas?

lol, putting Tyrus and Bosh in the same sentence is like sizing up Shaq with Tractor Traylor.

If anything Ed is like Horford with a bigger offensive mindset.

ill have to wait and see

ill have to wait and see what favors does against guys closer to his size who can actually play...i cant compare a player who dominates hs untill he plays against real comp...made that mistake years ago with felipe lopez and schea cotton

Yea Favors is like Amare

Yea Favors is like Amare with better defense and rebounding...I guess with that said Favors is most comparable to Kevin Garnett to me.

I'm not crazy about Ed Davis or his ability to be great in the NBA. He seems alot more like Brandan Wright than Amare or Chris Bosh to me. He doesn't have much of a skill-set, even though Wright fares better on the perimeter (slightly) than Davis. I think he'd be a mediocre NBA player.

Favors

Derrick Favors plays like Alonzo Mourning more than anybody else. Including Amare or Garnett. The Josh Smith comparison is common but I don't like that one either,

Ed Davis works hard, which is nice to see. He is a professional, smart and will be a good pro. With that being said, I've scouted him more than any other player recently (I have a lot of UNC games from last year recorded), and I can't see what all of the top 3-hoopla was about. I also don't know of a great comparison right now.
