Who should be starting this year for Duke with their loaded backcourt?

Okafor is obvioulsy a lock to start. Quinn Cook is now the captain of this team but now has to share the position with Tyus Jones, could they play togeter? Then there’s still Rasheed Sulaimon and Justise Winslow who could both start at the 3 if Coach K were to go with a duo PG backcourt. Amile Jefferson was forced to play down low with their lack of bigs last year and started most of last year, could definitely play next to Okafor in the post. So glad Tyler Thornton and Josh Hairston are gone, no more having to play them more than plyaers they’re obviously better than. Who would you start?

    Winslow

Big Duke fan here and though alex murphy did not hurt us by transferring, I think he was a good player with a lot of potential. I just hate that these players get recruited over and I think that Semi deserves to start over Winslow but I don’t think that it will happen. He is essentially the same player as winslow… good shooter, good defender, very athletic, but he has the experience of going up against two first round picks every practice last year and I would hate to see him transfer because he is not being given the opportunity to play.

I am far away from being a Duke fan (big UNC fan).  I think in order for Duke to maximize their potential they are going to need to step it up on D.  (I think Winslow is their best overall defender) and Jefferson is going to have to add range to his shot or Winslow will start at the 4 (which he is more than capable of doing).  If Jefferson still needs to play close to the basket that won’t give Okafor that much space to work with.

Okafor is going to be facing a lot of doubles (had Jabari stayed, this team would be downright scary), and it would be nice to have someone who could take that pressure off himself.  Okafor needs to stay out of foul trouble and in order to do so the guards are going to have to be a lot better at stopping penetration and leaving Okafor alone on an island to protect the rim.

At the end of the day I think we will see something like this:

    PG Tyus Jones 28 min./Cook 12 min.
    SG Cook 15 min./Matt Jones 15 min./Allen 10 min.
    SF  Sulaimon 26 min./Winslow 10 min./Olejeye 4 min.
    PF  Winslow 17 min./Jefferson 15 min./Olajeye 4 min.
    C  Okafor 30 min./Jefferson 5 min./Plumlee 5 min.

The depth at the positions don’t really denote their specific time at those positions; but their totals reflect realatively what I expect to see.

Now off to start a UNC one.  Thanks for the idea 🙂

I think the whole.key for duke this year is okafor.  If he comes in and dominates and plays at.an all,American level, duke has a.chance.  it’s been well documented that duke hasn’t had a truly elite big man in quite some time.  Okafor might be the.most skilled post player duke.has ever had.not.counting.brand or boozer.as.true back to the basket.guys.  K will, have to adapt.from his usual three happy offense and.get okafor his.touches.  I still have questions about tyus Jones and his physical limitations, but okafor has a chance.to be really good.
