Cardinal_FanParticipantThis is the second game ive watched in this series in china and Rivers has not looked good at all. 11 turnovers in 2 games so far and its not half time yet. He seems to be forcing offense to much and its really making him look bad, nothing like the highly ranked prospect and offensive force i was expecting to see. Seems like he trying to show he can score 30 rather than play within the flow of the offense. If this is the Austin Rivers Duke will get for this upcoming season they will struggle big time. S/N Yao Ming is at the game…being aired on EspnU/Espn3 rite now!!! Ive been impressed with Tyler Thornton and Andre Dawkins, also Seth Curry looks really solid out there. Hopefully Rivers will buy in2 Coach K’s basketball brilliance and become the player we all know he can be. So far i must say im disappointed tho.

Cardinal_FanParticipantRyan Kelly has looked awesome, he’s lost weight and looked very active on the glass and even has a lil extra bounce in his step. Had a great 1 hand put back dunk in traffic. He will definately contribute to any Duke success this year.

omphalosParticipantWatched this game from the second quarter onwards, and honestly, I came away very unimpressed with Rivers; the Chinese team didn’t really have any great perimeter defenders but Rivers couldn’t pick the moments to strike. Also, Rivers is a god-awful defender, he was getting beaten off the dribble like nobody’s business. If I didn’t know who he was I wouldn’t have really noticed him; he can’t play off the ball and has a very isolation-based offensive game. Also, as mentioned, his turnovers were terrible. That said, he’s a freshman, and with more time he should improve, but I think he’s extremely overrated against college-level competition and this year’s Duke team is nothing on the past couple years.
Kelly did look good, but the Plumlees were all strictly transition/alley-oop players, could do very little offensively with the ball in their hands.
Thornton looks to be a great defensive spark, was making some great reads and had a few outstanding defensive plays, even with the terrible, ridiculously one-sided officiating.
As far as China was concerned, they had some good shooters on their team, but their guards were often too quick to pick up their dribble and too afraid of turning the ball over. I feel like basketball over there is too regimented from a young age to produce a truly great wing player.

IndianaBasketballParticipantRivers will improve (majority of players have an adjustment period), but his fan boys on here overrate him quite a bit.
He’s great to watch in youtube highlight videos, but I’ve never been too impressed with him. He can’t defend. He doesn’t know how to play off of the ball or anything close to a team game. Everything is isolation and off of the dribble (Not because he HAS to as some people claim, but because that’s all he knows how to do). He’s talented, but has your typical "AAU" "Sportscenter" mentality. He’s not good enough to have that mentality as the competition increases.
That’s why I’m higher on Beal.

kobyzParticipantdo Miles Plumlee have a chance to be a first round draft pick? i know he doesn’t have ton potential, but he a sure thing to find a place on any team roster and help, he is a smart bigman, active, understand positioning and boxout, excellent screener, good man to man defender, some back to the basket game, remind me Rasho Nesterovic…

Cardinal_FanParticipantIve always said Beal will be a much better pro becuase he doesn’t have to have the ball in his hands to be effective but yet he still scores 20-30 points within the flow of an offense. Ive also Rivers lacks an in between game, i dont think 1 time did i see him stop an pull up for a mid range jumper rather than drive rite in2 a turnover or blocked shot. Offensively as soon as Rivers touches the ball 90% of the time its like he think he’s the first & last option. He just has a ways to go as a pro prospect…the talent is definately there, im not saying tha guy can’t play but he has alot of maturing to do as a person. They showed some of his statements regarding current and past NBA players an they were a lil over the top. There was one about him sayin I wants to destroy Lebron James…Lebron James looks like Megatron comapred to that kid. There was another about how he’s met MJ, Ray Allen, KG and other NBA superstars thru his dad and how he was never impressed becuase he feels he’s going to be in their situtations 1 day. All I could say was woooow!!! Really cocky for a kid who has yet to prove a thing. Honestly he hasn’t impressed me going all the way back to the McDonalds game. He hasn’t faired well against really good competition lately.

4TheLoveOfThe GameParticipantI agree with yours and everyone’s opinion of Rivers being slightly overrated, but I’m so sick of everyone taking what he says so seriously and OUT OF CONTEXT. 1. His dad is a NBA coach so I’m sure he’s met these guys on multiple occasions. He’s played one on one with many of the Celtics players before. He’s not saying he’s unimpressed by these guys, he’s saying he’s not star struck like everyone else would be because he’s seen them a lot. Its like ppl in LA not being suprised when they see celebs cuz they’re always there. And stop twisting his words, he said he WANTS to be in there situation one day..not is GOING to! 2. The whole Lebron thing…he said he not only wants met Lebron but destroy him. To me he has the right mentality. As a basketball player you can’t go out there as a fan. If you go out there thinking "aww this is pointless, I’m playing against Lebron", HE will be destroyed! What basketball player wants to be embarrassed on the court? You have to have that mentality and honestly it kind of reminds me of a Kobe mentality. Kobe doesn’t give a damn who you are, he’ll drop 50 on his own mom if it means winning. I’m not comparing Rivers to Kobe so don’t have a cow. I agree he hasn’t done much in his career yet to warrant such comments and his play hasn’t backed it up either but give the kid a break. Stop nit-picking and think about those comments from a basketball players point of view and I bet they make sense.

Cardinal_FanParticipantRegardles are his statements not over the top??? Can you name a current NBA superstar that made statements like this in highschool/college??? Younger guys always play against NBA guys at camps, pro-ams, summer leagues all the time. So thats not an excuse about him not being impressed becuz he’s met this guy or that guy. At the addidas nations camp top high school prospects play against each other as well as top college guys, at various skills academies such Lebron James or Amare Stodamire’s camps high school guys play against pros & top college players. The guy is obviously overly cocky and needs to mature by leaps and bounds b4 i would even think about drafting him. Like i said b4, the guy has the talent and ability…but clearly the only 1 holding Austin Rivers back is Austin Rivers.

4TheLoveOfThe GameParticipantlol you act like he said he’s unimpressed in they’re hoop skills or something! He basically said he doesn’t hold them up on a pedestal because one day he wants to be on their level. To me thats not cocky. Not once did he say anything disrespectful about any of those players. Ha..but i do agree he needs to mature on and off the court to fully reach his potential (like any freshman), but i just think ppl are taking his comments out of context.

tuck243ParticipantThe first thing I took from your post is bias. It seems like you are doing what Merril Hoge is doing to Tebow. Relax its a China team that’s really not competetive. Austin trying to find his niche and I’m sure Coach K doesn’t have a problem with this right now. This is more of a scrimmage plus with all the lopsided calls for China, those non-calls WILL get called his way during season’s play. Austin had a great game at the USA vs. World and no one seems to include that in their assessment of him. When I read Austin said that about LeBron I thought FINALLY!!! It’s too much buddy buddy ish going on in the league now. I don’t care if he thinks he’s better than MJ. As long as he’s competing and work hard to improve and PROVE he’s better than him than it’s OK… Very few players have succeeded in the NBA without being brashful. If you dislike swagger than don’t watch basketball. To quote the great philosopher Jay-Z "Check out my swag yo, I walk like a ball player". It’s in their DNA… With that said, he didn’t even come off that way, you read text which ALWAYS seem to be taken wrong… How many time you text a girl and she thought something completely different than what you were trying to say? Because text has no mood… Relax buddy say this when he’s playing in the season. BTW he played well at NC Pro Am…

akhan786ParticipantI’m really glad Duke gets to play these games against stiff competition early so guys like Austin Rivers can iron out all of the regular freshman adjustments.
I think one of the biggest things he has to overome is keeping his head in the game. At the beginning of each match he was actually playing very well, but after a couple of drives with no calls (the officiating was horrible) he became visibly frustrated and it showed in his demeanor and game.
Keep in mind though this China team was no slouch. I can see them beating most NCAA teams even though they’re the U-23 squad. The international game is much more physical and it can be a shock to a player coming straight out of highschool.
I think Duke fans got spoiled with how well Kyrie Irving came out of the gates and showed no signs of having freshman adjustments. This is completely normal for a highly touted player like Austin Rivers.
IIRC Harrison Barnes went 0-12 in one of his early games and now look where he is now. People shouldn’t start panicking…there’s still 4 months till the ACC begins.

Cardinal_FanParticipantBy the way the NC Pro-Am is basically a series of all-star games, the only person i actually saw get down in a defensive stance was Julius Hodge when John Wall was "destroying him".

tuck243ParticipantYes this game wasn’t competetive. As they wasn’t play for ish. It’s funny that you call the NC Pro Am an All-Star game, but included the Mc Donald’s ALL STAR game as an assessment of how poorly he’s been playing lately. AND clearly missed my point of how he anchored the USA team to a win versus an International team with NBA talent some of which were drafted in the lottery this year. BTW I forgot Brad Beal was even on the court during that game… You are picking and choosing what games you want to use when you give your BIAS a** comments about A. Rivers… I hope you don’t make finacial decisions this way… Like I always say "Go to bed…"

akhan786ParticipantIf anyone cares…Rivers didn’t make up the nickname himself…
I think him running his mouth is a bit overrated. The media is just misconstruing his statements…
I don’t think his attitude problems is with him being cocky, but the way he pouts when a call doesn’t go his way.
He’s very Rasheed Wallace like…

4TheLoveOfThe GameParticipantShow me in any article where he says he is GONNA destroy Lebron!!! He WANTS to destroy Lebron or any player he is facing in the nba ONE DAY..smh idk why you can’t seem to grasp that. You have to visualize anything before you can accomplish it..he just used Lebron as an example of how he’s not afraid to play against anyone.

tuck243ParticipantI haven’t seen him act this way toward the refs at all before. Maybe the obvious lopsided calls is getting to him? I don’t think this will be a problem at all… But then again when you look to the NBA, I’ve seen D. Wade, Howard, CP3, LeBron, Kobe, KD, Westbrook and even the humble D. Rose have horrible bodily language and get whistled for a tech for cussing at the ref… CHILLLLLLLLLLLLLL on calling him Rasheed Wallace… Y’all are doing too much… This is probably only the second time you’ve seen him play in an actual full game and you coming with all these comments with no foundation for it… Relax…

akhan786ParticipantHaha yes I admit the Sheed comparison was a bit over the top, but to tell you the truth I don’t care if he pouts. The fact that when he pouts he usually gets lazy on the defensive end is really what bothers me.
I’ve seen Rivers play about a dozen times on ESPN not including the All-American games, and he still has this bad habit.
The thing is it is a HABIT and I’m sure K can work it out of him. This guy is going to have a HUGE target on his back ever since he committed to Duke. I hope he can deal with the pressure a little better than Barnes did last year.

uknationParticipantThis was a real game and both teams were playing to win. Rivers wasn’t that impressive but you can see the ability all he needs to do know is play within the team concept and i’m sure coach K will break him down untill he figures out to play within the offense and play defense.
I was very very impressed with elly for all three games. He had back to back 20pt games and a double double in 2 or all three games i think
