I’m not an expert or anything, but I feel like when you’re drafting guys, we never know who’s gonna become what. We just assume. So I think you should draft guys based on if they don’t improve anymore. Take them as they are. Lets look at the consensus top 5.

Wiggins—If he gets no better, here’s what you get: An athletic freak, good defender, capable of hitting the open 3, can finish above the rim, can rebound. Struggles to create his own shot consistently.

Embiid—If he gets no better, here’s what you get: An athletic freak, rim protector, can rebound, can run the court, can catch the lob. Would we still be so impressed if he was a guy who hooped all his life?

Parker—If he gets no better, here’s what you get: An all around offensive talent. Streaky jumper. Evolving post game. Falls in love w/ the jumpshot too much. Can finish. Can go left. Can go right. Just knows how to put the ball in his hole. But what can he do if his jumper’s not falling?

Smart—If he gets no better, here’s what you get: Can do a bit of everything. Strong rebounder for a guard. A dog on defense. A great leader. Doesn’t shy away from the big moment. Is learning how to run a team. A bully. But can he keep pace w/ the new athletic PGs? Will bully ball work in the NBA?

Randle—If he gets no better, here’s what you get: Great rebounder. Can finish around the basket & through contact. Bullies competition. Super athletic & strong. But will bully ball work in the NBA? Is he big enough to be a big man, is he skilled enough to work on the perimeter?

How does Parker’s "shot evolve" and Smart "learn how to run a team" if they don’t improve anymore. I don’t get it.

Saying he’s learning how to run a team because he has an idea on how to do it, but it’s not a strong point yet. Not saying he’ll improve, just saying that its not necessarily a weakness or strength. Not saying he’ll get better.

    Same as Parker

As opposed to their "ceiling". It would minimize the risk but the guys who end up as the top players usually aren’t all the most NBA ready players and almost always have a risk factor. This might lead to taking a guy like McDermott in the top 5 and while he’s likely to be at least decent as a role player, that’s not what you need as a bottom 5 team moving forward. Your right that teams really are just assuming, but they also have partial responsibility to put these kids in a position to succeed and develop their skills, and bodies to some extent. For all we know Bennett would be tearing it up if he were drafted by someone else (he’d almost certainly be doing better ANYWHERE else).

Uhhhh according to your "logic" the top 5 picks would look like CJ Fair, McDermott, Shabazz Napier, Adrian Payne and Rob Kaminsky.
