the27guyParticipantIn the days before the draft, every year countless lies are told. Today, many news outlets are reporting one of those lies—which is being told by the Cleveland front office.
ESPN and others are reporting that Cavs owner Dan Gilbert and his front office disagree on who they should take with the number one overall pick. This. Is. A. Lie.
At this point in the process, having had weeks to decide, the team has made a decision, but they have every incentive to misdirect other teams on what they are doing, in case their real intent is to trade the pick to the highest bidder.
What does this mean from a Jazz fan perspective? Let’s say the Jazz really want Jabari Parker. If the Jazz want Parker, and they know that the Cavs are planning on taking Wiggins then they have the chance to orchestrate a trade with the Bucks, the team selecting second. By “leaking” that the front office is unclear which direction they will go with the first pick, they artificially inflate the value of the pick to potential trade suitors, since those other teams don’t really know how high they need to trade up to get their guy.

WhodunitParticipantA good strategy by the Cavs. Send everyone below them into a panick thinking their guy is gonna be gone. And you get better offers at the last minute.
