jjonzParticipantConsidering that everybody is being trashed for being bad defenders, how do you rate a great defender. I say lateral speed, size & effort have a lot to do with it. With as much skil as these players have somebody is bound to get torched some nights. I mean come on LaBradford Smith scored 37 on Jordan. So when we think of great defeners what comes to mind steals, block shots. When i think of great perimiter Defenders I think about guy’s that make you earn your shots. Post Defense is hard to judge 1on1 because so many shot blockers are great help defenders. So here are the Current leaders in Steals & Blocks.
Steals Paul/Rondo/M.Ellis/Westbrook/Felton
Blocks Bogut/McGee/Darko/STAT/DHoward
Which of these players are truely great defenders?
I think great 1on1 defenders are some older vets like S.Battier/K.Thomas/R.Artest
I think C.Brewer is a great defender & JWall has that GP length & crazy quickness+speed to play LockDown D.

OhCanada-ParticipantPaul, Rondo, and Westbrook are good defenders along with Bogut and Howard. Teams should be trying to pickup Corey Brewer hes very underrated for a defensive minded wing.He can also shoot from 3 fairly well, and slash to the bucket.
I also think Hinrich is a great defender and feel bad he got stuck on Washington…

MkadozaParticipantDwight Howard and Bogut are good defenders because they make it hard to score in the post without blocking shots. They use their strength, position, size and length to contest and bother most attempt. Where as McGee and Amare use their explosion to quickly close the gap weakside to make block. But their more effective guarding faceup bigs, where they can get help (not a lot of help on the Knicks and Wiz), because if their isolated down low with a decent big man, theyre usually over powered.
Similar with Rondo and Paul. Their size, strength are below average and can get bodied up, but their outstanding lateral quickness and vecro hands cause many turnovers. Rondo has a little more luxury to gamble given the defense of Allen, Pierce, Garnett, and Perkins to make probably the best team defense in the league. Feltons like a slower stronger, poor mans Paul.. Westbrook and Ellis are much like Rondo, except with worse defenders around them, but stronger, and less of a liability guarding PG’s. The fact that Ellis has to guard 2 guards only elevates his standing in my mind.
Team defense is more important than 1 on 1 defense because a. 1-on-1 is much harder and more exausting, escpecially when your playing 35-38 minutes a night. It also espouses confidence to do some of the things that Rondo does, because the team has complete understanding of rotations if he misses on the gamble.

OhCanada-ParticipantUtilized efficiently McGee can be a great defender in the L. But he has to be on the court with a large and capable post defender, he is a help defender and very similar to marcus Camby in many ways.

Snubs15ParticipantBeing good at steals doesnt always mean your a good defender. Some players gamble alot and it hurts their team more than it helps. Same thing goes for good shot blockers. some players jump way more often and this can hurt the team because they will often times fall for little pump fakes and allow easy buckets.
Imo the best defenders are the ones who are always in the right position, stay in front of their man, and dont fall for pump fakes which forces bad shots. What would make them even better is if they are good at taking charges. Its not just the 1 on 1 D but help D is just as important.
Someone who i think is really good at D is Bogut as he takes alot of charges. hes a smart positional defender and he blocks alot of shots. Battier is also very good position wise.

Leftovers16Participanti have been saying the same thing dude… steals doesnt mean youre a good defender if Rondo is a great defender, Iverson must be the best defender ever… if you watch Rondo he REALLY cant play defense he gambles every play and gets beat most of the time like mention above good rotation helps a bad defender… Westbrook/Rose imo plays the best defense probably one of the best pg defenders right now lateral movement is good, strong, and offense games to keep other pgs tired
Contesting shots consistently is also good defense imo you wont be holding the other team to ZERO the whole game but if you make it harder for them to score thats what counts
Good defenders imo is Batum, vets like Duncan, Kobe (probably the one of the best right now), Dwade, LeBoring (as much as people dislike him he is one of the best), Garnett, Noah,
Surprisingly with Blake Griffin’s ups im amazed he hasnt had a highlight or two yet of him just swatting one into the upper level of the stadium yet… or atleast a highlight of him shutting someone down =(

r377ParticipantIf you look at the greatest defender of the modern era Dennis Rodman he averaged less than 1 block and 1 steal. A skinny 6"8 he used to defend Sg/sf/pf. He had great quickness and anticipation, used to get alot of charges or force opponents into tough shots.
You see it everywhere, guys who play sloppy defence and risk it trying to get a steal. Sure they might get 1 or 2 steals a game but prob lose 8-10 points a game for their team – or gamble so much one of their teams bigs will get into foul trouble trying to cover their man…
