This was raised today by a friend. I said no, their money is guaranteed. So yeah, the league might make more money off of a game 7, but the players would not. Their money is set. So it’s unlikely they would rig it to force a game 7.

I think that’s very different for the refs. But for the players that’s how I see it. Once they sign on the line at the beginning of the season, it doesn’t matter if 10 people tune in or 7 billion. They will get their money or they’ll sue the league. It doesn’t matter if they win a championship in a 4 game series or a 7 game series. They will get the same money.

Does that make sense? In the grand scheme, yeah players care about viewership because that allows them to be paid more. But for viewership of the finals, I don’t think there’s a huge focus. The money they will receive is set.

    Thoughts?

All about the Money more people will watch a game 7 Lebrons and Currys brand are about to sky rocket higher then they already are.  Besides the cash factor looks great on the legacy winning a game 7.

If theyre thinking big picture and root cause, there is no money to go around without viewers. So technically they should care a lot. However, realistically, the money isn’t going anywhere at this point..so they dont have much to worry about.

I know someone who had some knowledge of the discussions between the NBA and Turner/ESPN when the deal was renewed and if the players knew what was good for them, they’d without a doubt care about viewership.  They’d all want every series to go to seven games.

Those things are discussed over and over and over in those negotiations.  And since the bulk of player contracts are centered around TV deals/money, they better care.

On a night to night basis and when they are locked into a series for an NBA Title…probably not so much, but the guys sitting at home that play for other teams should be pulling hard for long series with big storylines and high ratings because it will ultimately factor into their paychecks when CBA’s are renewed and when TV/sponsorship deals are up for renewal.
