Dirk Considered Playing College Basketball

Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki joined the show to talk about the upcoming NBA Finals and much more. Here are some of his takes:

– Nowitzki didn’t quite agree with his coach Rick Carlisle talking about him as a top 10 player. “I don’t really see myself as one of the greats of all time,” Nowitzki said.

Nowitzki said Carlisle’s list had him and nine Boston Celtics, so you can’t take it too seriously.

Nowitzki said he wants to win a title, but not for his individual legacy, but because he wants the team to win one after coming so close in 2006.

– Nowitzki thinks that he has the experience to get his shot in lots of different situations. But he said it’s not about one-on-one. It’s about team. “I have to adjust my game,” Nowitzki said.

– Nowitzki talked a lot about his early days in basketball. He said he had doubts about his game early on. Never his shot, but his fitness and his athleticism. But then he got comfortable and those concerns went away.

Nowitzki said he grew up in a different game than Americans. It wasn’t an iso game … it was more 5-on-5, movement-based, and big men had to shoot from the outside.

He said that he didn’t go to America to play high school ball because he didn’t want to be converted to a traditional back-to-the-basket player.

Nowitzki said that he visited Kentucky, Stanford and Cal. But he went straight to the NBA.

– Nowitzki talked about seeing Dan shoot. He said the stroke was there even though the result wasn’t always there.
