Big Pistons fan here.. Got a Quick Question for you guys: What do you think the Pistons should do to in the next few years? I love our front court (Monroe & Drummond) but our backcourt needs a lot of work. I think we will need at least two more lottery picks (2013, and 2014) to even consider making the playoffs. I don’t think we will be able to sign any big free agents without overpaying them (something I am strongly against). Knight is young but very very inconsistent and I still am not sure what will become of him in the NBA. Calderon is pretty old and will likely leave for a contender team in the offseason. So I pose to you this question: What do you think the Pistons should do?

They should realize knight should be a good sixth man and that him singler and another solid bigman would form a great bench for the future. They need a point guard and a wing for their starting lineup, a scoring wing and a point guard who can run a team. then they are set. They can get maybe a solid veteran bench big man in free agency and then look to the draft this year and next for the 2 starters and one of them would need to have star potential.

i believe calderone stays for a cheaper price. if i were the pistons, i would go after a stud wing scorer who doesn’t mind an offense that goes through there bigs every other play.

If they got a top 5 pick this year, I would draft Marcus Smart (if still available), that will enable Brandon Knight to slide to SG and Smart has enough size to guard opposing SG.

If they get a top 10 pick plan B would have to be Trey Burke, and hope that Brandon Knight will thrive as a 6th man or play along the starting line up and form a small backcourt with Burke.

I just don’t see Brandon Knight as a solution at the PG, but I do see him as a talented scoring guard and can be valuable if used as a 6th man or alongside a big PG (like Smart or Carter-Williams). But then again, Knight is still 20 years old with time to grow as a PG. Looking at Jeff Teague this season, it took him a while to finally start playing like he’s capable of as a PG, so it’s hard to give up on Knight that easily especially when he’s only 20.

they should sing calderon 3 years/18mill.not the best point guard but pistons not gonna win soon and jose it´s unselfish and could help developing young players.
they should draft BPA except norel cause dre,at least for me,it´s the only locked future all-star they have.
then use their cap,but not to overpay FA like smith or mayo.
for example, they could steal some talent from golden state.GSW,even if they amnesty biedrins and if landry opt in they are going to be in tax trouble if they want to resing jack and find some backup C to cover bogut injuries
detroit could take harrison barnes and richard jeferson for singler and stuckey, with about 4 mill guaranteed next year,or maybe if they offer knigth too they could get klay thompson

    sorry for my poor english

I’m also a Pistons fan. Firstly, I don’t think that Drummond and Monroe will be able to play together on a championship contending team. Monroe is too slow for a PF in this day and age. So, during this draft, they do two things. With their actual draft pick, it looks like it will be pretty high, so Shabazz Muhammad could be available. If he is, take him. Secondly, trade Monroe for a semi-high draft pick, like Cleveland or Philly, in order to take Anthony Bennett, who would be perfect with Drummond. Then, after next season, sign John Wall, who I expect will be looking to leave Washington. Then, the starting lineup is Wall, Muhammad, Singler, Bennett, Drummond. In a few years, that’s a really good team.

What i think they should do is this:
a)Keep Calderon to play the same role that Andre Miller plays for the Nuggets but don’t overpay him.Let him mentor Brandon Knight.I haven’t given up on Knight yet i don’t think he will ever become an all-star and to me he should have stayed an other year in college cause he is still too raw.
b)Get a scoring wing like Muhammad in this year’s draft(if he’s still available)
c)Keep Will Bynum around too.He has had some great games for them
d)Fire coach Frank for starting Maxiell over Drummond.Monroe and Drummond is the frontcourt of the future for the Pistons.Though Drummond really really needs to work on his free throw shooting
e)Don’t overpay for free agents. The CV/Ben Gordon situation really took Detroit a lot of steps in the wrong direction

I like the directions the Pistons’ are headed forward too. Here are my thoughts on what the Pistons’ should do:

    1. Keep Monroe and Drummond (Monroe is your franchise player IMO)
    2. Trade Stuckey, Trade/Amnesty Villanueva
    3. Keep Singler/Knight/Jerebko
    4. You had Calderon 10 Mil contract expiring and as well as Maggette’s, so you guys are looking pretty good financially.
    5. I WOULD resign Calderon for a cheaper deal because he is a good back up PG and he is a very loyal player, trust me it’s coming from a Raptor fan.
    6. In free agency, I know it sounds crazy, but you have to at least try when you’re a GM is to try and get CHRIS PAUL. I know it is highly unlikely but getting Chris Paul would be amazing for this team. For more realistic approaches though, maybe going after David West, Josh Smith and Paul Millsap? I think Millsap would be the more realistic approach because he won’t be a max contract like Josh Smith (I don’t think Josh Smith is a max type of player) and David West is getting up in age.
    7. Possibly trade for Granger? Maybe a trade involving Stuckey going to the Pacers? Or hopefully Kirilenko does not exercise his player option and signs with the Pistons (he’s been amazing for the T-Wolves this season)
    8. Another issue I see is, what is Brandon Knight? Is he a SG or PG? In my scenario I have him as a SG, if thats the case, the Pistons need some PG help. Do they resign Calderon cheaper and sign another FA? Billups, Mo Williams, Will Bynum, Devin Harris, DJ Augustin are all FA PGs. Maybe go younger and sign DJ Augustin?

    Monroe-Drummond
    Millsap-Jerebko
    Kirilenko-Singler
    Knight-Middleton-English
    Augustin-Calderon

Let me know what y’all think.

try to resign calderon and keep knight at the 2… and draft a SF ala Otto Porter…. OR…. if calderon doesn’t come back get Smart if possible.. put knight at the 2 still… keep Monroe… no reason to get rid of him when u have Drummond protecting the paint and when hes in pick n rolls… and it would be dumb to give up on knight.. remember he only played 1 yr in college is only 21 years old… and hes a gym rat… that hard work is going to pay off I think

Knight can play the PG, it’s still far too early in his career for Knight to be relegated to being an undersized 2; there are so many scoring PGs out there these days that I don’t think Knight offers any real disadvantage. While a pick like Michael Carter-Williams as SG who can create for others would be a good pick-up, it’s not essential.

I’d be hoping and praying they get McLemore or he drops to them, because Bazz wouldn’t be happy playing alongside a “twin towers” team in Monroe and Drummond, and they need some shooting to stop opponents packing the paint. Knight can shoot a little, but they need someone off the ball to spread the floor outside of Singler.

Detroit are an interesting team, I really like Knight, Drummond and Monroe as the core going forward, they just need a few designated shooters and a lockdown wing defender to replace Prince’s efforts there; Otto Porter might be a good look for them going forward, it just depends where the picks end up really.

In the next year or two the Pistons are way, way under salary cap so they can grab one or even two good quality FA’s.

The backcourt is a bit of a dilema. Knight doesn’t really look to be a quality pass first PG. However I have not given up on him. He works had and good still develop into a good starting PG. Billups, Conley and Payton were considered busts early on in their career. Knight is still so young, he is a hard worker, I think he can turn it around. He does need a good role model. Calderon if cheap enough could work well. If Chauncey retires at the end of this season I would personally hire him as some sort of coach/mentor for Knight. Billups has already hinted as wanting to be a coach someday.

I am not sure what pick the pistons will get here. Besides PF and C they could go after anyone. Otto Porter would be good or Oladipo would be a nice addition. I think Joe Dumars can see a little bit of Oladipo in himself.

If they land approx a 9th or 10th overall pick, they could even trade that for JLamb or perhaps Marshon Brooks.

The Pistons look to be tanking real hard. They have lost 8 in a row and are playing Brooklyn today so that will prob be 9 in a row.

With all the losses they might be able to move up and snag a top 6 pick….

McLemore, Smart or Porter would all be good fits if the Pistons end up with a top 3 lottery pick. If they stay where they are now – 6th/7th then Bazz if he declares might be the best option. I don’t see them wanting to go big again, they can add frontcourt depth via FA market and would want a veteran presence there perhaps to help Monroe and Drummond.

Anthony Bennett looks more an NBA PF so I would not consider him as a legit SF/PF option for them. The one guy they might consider trading down for could be Victor Oladipo who could be the sort of blue collar defensive guy that could glue a team together and almost fits the mould of previous successful Detroit teams.

If Joe Dumars didn’t fancy anyone in the draft and they slipped a bit then I wonder if he might think out of the box and maybe contact Charlotte to try and trade the pick to get the one they owe them back or even Chicago to get the pick that they are due from the Bobcats. Would Charlotte turn down a late top 10 pick this year given their current state and I could see Chicago being very interested in adding a top 10 guy on rookie wages. Think say Olapido alongside D-Rose guided by Coach Thibs.

This way Detroit would probably still struggle next year but puts them in with a good chance of getting a plumb pick in the 2014 draft and either stops them losing a pick to Charlotte or brings in a future pick via Chicago and Charlotte.
