littleteapotParticipantSemi related to the Lebron weight discussion:
I saw about 1 minute of highlights of Derrick Rose in the Team USA scrimmages and he looked a lot skinnier than I remember, and he even seemed like he moved more like a lighter-weight player (yes I know I’m basing all this on 1 minute of highlights).
Anyone else see this? I haven’t seen it reported anywhere. I also think I remember an interview before the season he tore his ACL where he said he added heavy weightlifting to his offseason conditioning program, and if anyone remembers that season, he didn’t just get the ACL at the end of the year, he was battling knee hip and back problems the entire year. Is this an effort to put less stress on his knees and other injury prone body parts? Is he trying to turn himself into more of a finesse player so he can avoid contact at times instead of always trying to finish through it? Does he just think he is more of a finesse player because the injuries slowed him down and he’s been working on more skill stuff?

stealsgaloreParticipantI think alot of those injuries have to do with how you build your body. Though it seems common sense, it can be hard to build the upper and lower body equally. Playing college basketball (albeit on a very small level) I have seen weightlifting be stressed and seen guys come back huge. Unfortunately the cliche of "skipping leg day" seemed to apply to them. This meant that their legs had to support the extra weight of their upper body, putting more torque and stress on their joints during stopping and starting. This led to a couple of my teammates tearing their ACL/MCL’s
The point I’m trying to make is that extra weight definately has an effect on the stress put on the joints. With Derrick Rose, especially with his joint already having been injured, it would make total sense to lose weight to try and stay healthy. A prime example of this is Tim Duncan. timmy lost 15-20 pounds over the years (I believe after the Grizzlies series loss specifically) and it has enabled him to stay healthier (along with Popovich’s minutes restrictions). I think Lebron is trying a similar approach and sees an oppurtunity to prolong his career.

IndianaBasketballParticipantIF Rose is 209 lbs, then he’s actually heavier. His playing weight is around 190-200 lbs.
I think Rose looks lean, but he’s upper body is still huge.

HitsterParticipantD-Rose is likely to have gained bulk if he isn’t playing even if he worked out his upper body as well as rehabbing his ACL. I’d imagine he’ll soon get back down to his playing weight once he starts full pre-season although he may decide to carry a bit for bulk if he’ll be playing a less athletic style than he did before at least initially when he returns until he has fully tested his ACLs in a fair few games.
