YungmUNyParticipantI noticed that this site has him undrafted. I’m supposing that’ll change coming off of his performance against Kansas last night (29 pts, 12 rbs, 12 asts, only 1 turnover), but I was wondering what people on this forum thought about his all-around game and potential in the league.
He reminds me a lot of Greivis Vasquez, not just with his all-around game, but also with the way he seems to play with reckless abandon at times. He’s always been one of those players that makes the risky plays and takes the risky shots that have most coaches pulling their hair out, but somehow he seems to have a knack for making them more often than not. He’s not undersized for his position, and although he’s not exceptionally athletic, I wouldn’t describe him as slow.
If I’m a playoff team that’s drafting in the late first round, I might take a flyer on Valentine.
Thoughts?

kazamParticipantI’m a huge MSU fan, got to see them live at the Final Four last year. But for years Denzel has been one of those guys who makes you scratch your head sometimes and other times jump for joy. His shooting has improved steadily over his career at MSU and he competes defensively. He’s a kid who just knows how to play, not unlike Draymond Green another hard nosed Izzo guy.
This isn’t saying I expect Valentine to have the type of meteoric rise that Draymond has experienced, but I expect Valentine to be in the NBA for a number of years based on his intanigibles and ability to play in a variety of roles. If his jumper keeps improving he could be a very valuable guy off the bench for teams looking for versatility. In this age of wanting ‘switching groups’ defensively and play makers offensively he seems to fit the bill.

giddyup123ParticipantI’m not one to hype after a big game but I love seeing him get some credit for a real productive career at MSU as an under-the-radar star. I’ve always been high on Valentine, and definitely understand the comparisons to Draymond Green in terms of being a 4 year college man, coming in underhyped, improving each year, all-around player. Not to say he’ll have nearly the impact of Green, but I definitely think in the right situation he could be a starter in the league for a decade due to his all-around play, passing ability, versatility, and improving jumpshot. I see him sort of having the same impact rookie Landry Fields had a few years back with the Knicks but being able to sustain that for awhile.
Also, I think he is another in a growing line of players (along with Draymond Green, Danny Green, and Wesley Matthews as other notable guys) that may be precieved to be low-upside guys but that are known commodities and WORK HARD to improve, particularly their jumpshots, and are able to become high quality starters on playoff teams year in and year out.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantI have some questions about him at the next level, particularly concerning what position he will play. He would be at a severe quickness disadvantage as a pg and im not sure he would be enough of an outside threat to play on the wing. Still, he just flat out knows how to play and his court vision is phenomenal. With his combination of toughness and bball iq I have to believe he will find a way to become at least a serviceable NBA player.

beard20ParticipantI can see it being a very similar situation to when Kalin Lucas left and Draymond finally got to control most of MSU’s possessions.Travis Trice was obviously a great player for them,i mean theymade the Final Four last year, but when Valentine controls what happens on the court it seems like good things happen.

YungmUNyParticipantDenzel had another unreal game last night against Boston College:
29 points (11-16 fg, 6-9 3pt), 11 rebounds, 10 assists in 29 minutes
In 150 minutes of basketball, he has 90 points, 47 rebounds, 49 assists, and only 11 turnovers.
One thing that stood out for me in last night’s game was how much faster he looked. I didn’t realize that he was carrying much extra weight, but the announcers said he lost 11 pounds since last season, and it’s really showed out there on the break. He was able to out-run the Boston College defenders on at least two plays, taking it the entire 94 feet.
He’ll inevitably have his down games, but it’s promising that his two triple doubles have been against decent opponents (Kansas and Boston College). He’s also playing with a lot more confidence than usual. He’s always had the confidence to make the risky play (maybe a litle too much confidence), but the way he’s being assertive, commanding and leading that offense like a real floor general seems new. It’ll be interesting to see how he reacts to two more back-to-back tests — Boise State in about an hour and (likely) Arizona tomorrow.

YungmUNyParticipantToday’s line against Indiana:
30 pts, 5 rbs, 13 asts, 3 steals and only 1 TO on 11-19 shootting (5-8 from 3pt).
It looks like he’s back to his early season form…
