nath09ParticipantDear NBA GMs,
I have $100 to spend on lunch at work this week. I am going to use it to buy 5 hot dogs.
I am not going to pay $20 for each hot dog just because I can. I am going to pay for what my hot dog is worth, keep the rest of the money in my pocket and if any of my hot dogs turn out to be garbage I can still go and get a prime cut of steak with the rest of my money.

Arc12345ParticipantDear Nath09,
There’s a minimum cap (85 million) that must be reached by all teams. They have no choice but to meet it.
Yes people are getting overpaid, yes some of them aren’t the best, but it’s the name of the game. Certain people got lucky and had their contracts expire at the perfect time.
So stop whining about people getting paid. They can’t save all of their money until next year to buy steak.

EndlessknightParticipantThere is no meaningful penalty for not meeting the salary floor. It’s silly to spend just for the sake of meeting it.

nath09ParticipantDear Arc 12345
You can pick your targets and fill your needs. If your not buying a piece that’s going to give you a ring you can quite easily get to the floor limit of the cap.
You will not see the Spurs or Warriors do it.
I’m not complaining that people are getting paid and I don’t begrudge someone like Conley his contract. I Deplore a team paying someone like Parson $24 million or whatever he’s getting and tying up cap space for a player that is neither a star nor reliably healthy.Deals like that don’t need to be done.
Also in no way was a whining in the opening point. I was pointing out the absolute lack of business acumen it showed.

Hype MachineYou either pay up or you get nothing and miss the playoffs. Thats how the game works. This forum has the ability into brainwash fans into thinking it’s ok to suck. It is a draft forum after all, which appeals mostly to fans who don’t have winning teams to support.
But most fans don’t want their teams to get worse because they didn’t spend money they had in their wallet, just to wait a year and then hope someone good signs for them.
You think a high quality free agents are going to Utah, Sacrameneto, Denver, Atlanta, Milwaukee, Brooklyn, Orlando etc if they don’t already have a playoff-worthy roster in place? If Brooklyn or Atlanta could decide not to spend this season just to save for next season and get Lebron, Durant and Curry, I’m pretty sure they would.
Listen to tanking sympathisers like Negguary, Scarecrow and EndlessKnight, they’ll tell you to blow it up to get 5-7 lottery picks, but fans who pay for season tickets and NBA league pass to support their favourite team appreciate the spirit of athletic competition and want the best possible lineups.

nath09ParticipantNot being a playoff team and tanking are 2 different things. Sacramento don’t tank they just suck.
Not paying Chandler Parsons $24 million a year is not tanking, not paying Evan Turner $18 a year is not tanking. It is clever money management. By the way in my opinion those 2 contracts make Batum worth $35 million a year which makes KD worth 60-70.
Conley got $30 million a year, he provides more than his stats show on paper and the Grizzlies find it hard to attract FA (well besides Parsons) so that contract I understand even though Mike Conley is now the holder of the biggest contract in NBA history.
Having said that how much do Westbrook, Curry, Paul, Lillard and Wall think they’re worth.
Obviously with an increasing cap salaries will rise but you don’t go out on day 1 and spend it over commiting on average players and inturn risk offending your current players especially if you have overcommitted and left yourself short for when it’s their turn to get paid.
If signing free agents is about making the playoffs and not sucking spread the wealth and build depth, maybe overpay on a 2 year contract and wait until there is someone worthy of the giant contract.

nath09ParticipantIt only gives credence to tanking. The Sixers are now chock full of young talent on rookie contracts and if these kids show that they are a good nucleus the Sixers are in a position to go offer Westbrook 4 years $200 million.

Ahkasi ClayParticipantBut why pay $20 for a hotdogs. When you can spend the same $20 on a old hot dog that you will probably not be able to eat.
