DeAndre Daniels out of Connecticut has signed with my basketball team in the Australian League. He was drafted by the Toronto Raptors with pick 37.

This is a similar path taken by James Ennis, who was a second round draft pick in 2013 and polished his game in the Australian pro-league where his team stayed in touch with the Miami Heat who held his draft rights and signed him to a deal for this upcoming season.

What can you tell me about his game. What are his strengths and weaknesses? How will his game translate to a small-ball, high-tempo league? How was his Summer league etc.

Love to hear some feedback as I didn’t follow his progress in great detail during his time at UCONN

He’s got no handles, good range and stroke but somewhat slow release, good athlete but lacks strength. Him going to Austrailia doesn’t surprise me. Donte Greene-esq type of career might be best case senario. I’ve always thought Ennis belonged in the NBA and with turnover in Miami I think there will be a spot for him this year, I don’t feel the same way about Daniels.

      Cheers.

I thought Ennis had the athleticism, range and defensive ability to play in the NBA from the first time I saw him. He dominated the Aussie League despite having a game better suited to NBA than international leagues.

However he hasn’t got a high basketball IQ, needed to work on ball handling and definitely needed a year to learn the pro-game and lifestyle, which he got in Perth. I think he’ll be a good backup SF in the NBA.

He was an underachiever his first couple years at UConn.  This past year he really grew into his own, although his numbers didn’t take a big leap.  He’s got a pretty solid stroke from outside.  Doesn’t have much handles, although he has improved in that area.  He became much more aggressive over the final half of the season.  Took the ball to the bucket more often, and showed a willingness to play physical.  Showed some nice moves during the tourney, including some nice turn-around and mid range jumpers.  Defensively he’s only average, isn’t all that quick, and I would say just slightly above average athletically.  He’s got a big wing-span which helps though.  To me his major weakness is strength.  He’s very skinny, and doesn’t have much bulk/muscle.  He’s got some nice upside though.  Just needs to get stronger, work on his handles, and improve some defensively.

Daniels actually played well in Summer League (10 ppg 6.2 rpg), and I think looked more like a player that left off at the level he was playing during the NCAA tournament, rather than the underachiever his sophomore year.

DeAndre is an extremely long player, and although thin, is a pretty solid defender. He also has good range, and the ability to hit an outside shot. He’s big and athletic enough to make plays around the rim, and hit the offensive glass, although he’s not the type of player who hangs out a lot in the paint.

In in the NBA, he seems like a guy who can fit that 3 and D role off the bench, and I’m a little surprised he didn’t at least make it to training camp for the Raptors this season. I think he has the potential to be a solid role player at the NBA level, and should be big factor for Perth next year, although he’s not the #1 option type takeover guy on offense because his handles are just so so for a 3, but he’s a good defender, with great length and some offensive tools lead by an outside jumper.

Daniels’ junior year stats are nearly identical to what Robert Horry put up as a junior.

He might be a better "game" guy.

All I know, he killed Memphis at Memphis when UConn came here.

I think he can play.  Either as a third string small forward or a backup "stretch four".

Decent skillset for today’s NBA.  Solid length and size to go with decent athleticism.  Can shoot 3’s, and rebound and block shots a bit.
