HaleParticipantContinuing my current theme of some teams to look out for next year, next up is the Davidson Wildcats. They played Louisville pretty tough today, they didn’t look spectacular but they played ok despite being awful from downtown. They need to get more physical and really struggled to run their offense, yet still made it a game. They return everyone of significance and were already a 13 seed this year. Four of the main eight guys who play will be Seniors next season.
De’Mon Brooks didn’t show up today, but he averaged 16.0 ppg in only 22.9 mpg. He’ll definitely be a guy to watch out for next year as a Jr. He has decent size for a college 4 at 6’7 225 and can play inside-out. He won’t create for himself but he can score at all three levels. Jake Cohen is another frontcourt guy they bring back. He’s 6’10 235 and he went for 24 and 10 today. He’s averaged over 12 ppg in his first three years and expect more of the same from him as a Sr. next year. He runs the floor hard, has some skills down in the post and can stretch the floor (37% from 3). He averaged 14 and 6 in only 25 mpg along with nearly 2 bpg.
Chris Czerapowicz is listed as a G but really isn’t much of one. He’s a good shooter who has good size (6’7) and he rebounds pretty well for his position. He can defend 2-4 despite not being a very good athlete. He averaged 10 ppg and 5 rpg in 25 mpg.
JP Kuhlman played poorly today, he went 1-7 from the field and tallied 3 assists. On the season he averaged 11 4 and 3, and like Cohen has been over double figures scoring for three years now. He’s a big time shooter who can handle the ball well and is a pretty good playmaker (almost 2:1 a/to ratio). He didn’t look comfortable against the Lousiville pressure defense, but we’ll see how he fares next season. He teams with Nik Cochran in the backcourt. Cochran lead the team in mpg and apg. He’s another great shooter, shooting 38% from downtown and near 90% from the line. He’s a physical player who can score and is a nice passer. He did alright today with 9 and 3.
Clint Mann is the Wildcat’s top bench scorer and he was very good against Louisville. He had 13 points and 3 blocks, and showed off a couple nice moves in the post that completely lost his defender. He only plays about 16 mpg but he brings size off the bench at 6’8 230, along with some skill and experience. Tyler Kalinoski is the only freshman who gets serious minutes. He averaged about 17 per game with modest results. He’s an inefficient scorer, but takes care of the ball extremely well. His reputation coming into college was that he’s automatic from deep, although he struggled there this year. How well he plays could be the X factor for them next season. The last guy in the rotation is sophomore guard Tom Droney. He played just over 21 mpg. He did virtually nothing today, and had a mediocre season overall offensively. However, he’s a solid passer, and is a smart defender who can play a couple different positions for Davidson. If his shot starts falling he could average 4-8 ppg.
Davidson may have lost today, but they should be dangerous next year. This same team beat Kansas, nearly beat Vandy, and played Duke fairly tough as well. There entire eight man rotation will be back along with two freshman who played sparingly but who offer length at 6’7 and 6’11. They lack athleticism, which is why Lousiville was such a tough matchup for them, but they have plenty of skill and great shooters (who didn’t show up today). They lack a true go-to scorer, as most of there guys are shooters or post guys who need the ball in good spots to produce consistently. If Brooks can add some ballhandling ability he could be that guy. With Droney and Kalinoski having the ability to step up there games this team will be a tough out next year going eight deep with smart, skilled, quality scorers.

JoeWolf1I was at the game where they beat KU and I was very impressed by their guard play. So much so I picked them to win today on my nbadraft.net NCAA bracket. Good write up, they were a solid team this year and I can see them being back in the mix next season.

HaleParticipantHe’s in the 2nd paragraph.

HaleParticipantYeah, I really like them going forward. There are a lot of low seeded teams that can get a lot better. Along with Davidson, there is Vermont who only loses one key guy, Western Kentucky’s top 3 players are only freshman and VCU only loses Burgess. All four of those teams will be dangerous next season.
Here are the other three I’ve done. They are in the College B-ball section.
