fliptonnParticipantThis interview is honestly the least professional/most ridiculous thing I’ve heard from a sports commissioner or any executive for that matter.

When Jim Rome asked David Stern if the lottery was fixed David Stern returned the question with another question, being "do you still beat your wife?"
Someone brought it up yesterday but I don’t think it was talked about enough.

aamir543ParticipantI mean, I believe Rome asked the stupidest question you could possibly ask, I mean, did he really think Stern would give an on air confession or somthing? There are some things you leave alone, you don’t ask a celebrity "Do you cheat on your wife?" it’s an insulting question, it was pretty funny when I read the dialogue yesterday, but it’s not that big of the deal, and when Stern asked Rome "Have you stopped beating your wife yet?" He meant it as an analogy of sorts, but definatly an unprofessional conversation between the two of them.

HaleParticipanthttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loaded_question
"A loaded question is a question which contains a controversial or unjustified assumption, e.g., a presumption of guilt.[1]
Aside from being a logical fallacy, such questions may be used as a rhetorical tool: the question attempts to limit direct replies to be those that serve the questioner’s agenda.[2] The traditional example is the question "Have you stopped beating your wife?" Whether the respondent answers yes or no, he will admit to having a wife, and having beaten her at some time in the past. Thus, these facts are presupposed by the question, and in this case an entrapment, because it narrows the respondent to a single answer, and the fallacy of many questions has been committed.[2] The fallacy relies upon context for its effect: the fact that a question presupposes something does not in itself make the question fallacious. Only when some of these presuppositions are not necessarily agreed to by the person who is asked the question does the argument containing them become fallacious.[2] Hence the same question may be loaded in one context, but not in the other. For example the previous question would not be loaded if it was asked during a trial in which the defendant has already admitted to beating his wife.[2]"

fliptonnParticipantIt’s not that big a of deal and Jim Rome’s question was ridiculous. That being said, as the commissioner of a major sports organization which is associated with numerous charities for children, the statement is pretty outrageous haha. I question his integrity at least.

RUDEBOY_ParticipantRome for years have ”Tried” to be as ”Controversial ” as he could be ,in order to GAIN Attention..He’s been an A$$ for years..Sort of like the ShockJocks you hear on radio..I Guess he wants to be the Howard Stern of sports…I remember in the 80’s,he kept going at Quarter Back Jim Everrett, kept calling him Christy Everette after the popular tennis player..Word got out that Jim didnt like it and told Rome to call him that to his face..Rome loved it and invited Jim on his show..And called him Chrissy to his face..Thats when Jim attacked him.. Stern has seem to have gotten a little Fiesty in recent years..I remember last year he said some things the players didnt like…And during the Nets-Spurs Finals a few years ago..Which was 1 of the lowest rated finals ever..Mike Tirico asked him ”why arent people watching these games”? Stern got mad… But i’m siding with Stern on this issue..Rome can be a MAJOR BUTTHEAD at times…

F_Si think it’s a GREAT question, and the one that should be ashamed for answering like a dumbass is stern. is no mystery that people are starting to question the "legit-ness" of the draft and the question might have been on the rhetorical side because Jim wasn’t getting the real answer (like aamir said).
but after the sketchy lottery where the recently sold team by stern gets the top pick i think it was time for stern to DO WHAT HE DOES BEST and answer with a
RED HEARRING…… <—- search it up in the dictionary

Jlv2012get a confession out of Stern. Stern never really addressed the question so that pretty much answered the controversy for me. NBA lottery + David Stern = Rigged. Case closed.

omphalosParticipantI think he DID answer the question if you listen to the actual interview. He said straight up, NO, not rigged. And then he went to say there were four media members there, a rep from every team and it was certified by Ernst and Young. Oh, and then he gave examples of how he couldn’t win for losing, because every lottery team had a reason for it to look like a fix.
I was shocked by the "have you stopped beating your wife yet?" question, but Rome later said that Stern was just using a rhetorical device, as Y2G has pointed out, it is apparently the go-to example of a loaded question. If Rome recognised it for what it was that explains his reaction to the question, he was really quite chilled, simply saying "I don’t think that’s fair". If Stern was literally asking if he’d stopped beating his wife I think Rome would have lost his temper.

Toronto16ParticipantThe fact that Stern got so upset shows the lottery was rigged.

RUDEBOY_ParticipantTo End All of this Talk about the Lottery being ”Rigged”..Next year…Why dont they VideoTape the actual drawing..Then show it After the Lottery Results and Teams Selections are Announced….
*
But to be honest there have been a few Questionable Teams that’ve gotten the number 1 pick..
1.Patrick Ewing in 1985….The year the Lottery was 1st introduced..Ewing who had been compared to Russell going To the largest media market in the world…
2.Ohio born Lebron James going to the Cavs..
3.Cavs getting 1st pick after Lebron leaves town..
4.New Orleans getting 1st pick..After the nba owned team had been sold…
5.Chicago moving up 8 places to get 1st pick..
6.Orlando getting number 1 pick in back to back years…

kobyzParticipantDavid Stern analogy was incorrect, Rome asked a legitimate question.

GrandmamaParticipantRead what Y2G wrote. It was a loaded question from what I understand. No malice behind it. And if you listen to the conversation rather than read it, you can see Rome doesn’t get upset because he knows it’s a loaded question.

Pro 1Participant@RUDEBOY
Add Toronto and Bargnani for BC’s Euro Raptors.
The Lottery is rigged that’s why Stern said what he said he was feeling defensive just ask Michael Jordan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDXhMDh5puc .
Patrick Ewing Lottery http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bX1kMlG8c7Y .

RUDEBOY_ParticipantI Think you can also add the Oden draft of 2007,some felt Portland was a center away from being a western conference powerhouse..They already had 2 budding stars in Roy and Aldridge…..
