I was expecting more from Exum – I never fell in love with him as a prospect but had to bite my tongue because he was lauded as the 2nd coming of Christ on here, but I thought he’d come out of the gates a little hotter (he DID play pro ball in Australia, or that’s what the experts kept telling all of us – even though I really don’t know if pro ball in Australia is better or average to NCAA D1)

His numbers on O so far have been bad, but he has shown signs of life on defense. I think he’s a few years away from being a solid contributor. Still think Marcus Smart will have a better career – but that’s one guys opinion.

    Exum so far:

    5 games

    26.6 MPG

    7.2 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 2.8 apg, 1.4 spg, 3.0 tpg, 31% shooting, 17% from deep, 64% free throws. a PIE of +4.80 (PIE = Players Impact Estimate)

For reference, Glen Rice Jr. has had a PIE so far of 22.75, Tim Hardaway a 15.75, and CJ McCollum a 13.67

Other players around the 4.0 – 5.5 PIE range in summer league were:

    Xavier Gibson, LA Lakers (undrafted)

Damen Bell-Holter, D League Select (undrafted)

    Melvin Ejim, Spurs (undrafted)

    Davante Gardner, Bulls (undrafted)

    Jordan Vandenberg, Knicks (undrafted)

    Roscoe Smith, LA Lakers (undrafted)

    Cameron Ayers, Pelicans (undrafted)

    Rion Brown, Kings (undrafted)

Now I dont want you to think I’m bashing on Exum – I just want to put it into perspective how…what’s the word…how un "5th overall-esque" he’s been so far. He’s had a few nice plays, but overall, he doesn’t stand out really, and it could be (it probably is) the fact that he’s SUPER young still, and has a ton of growing to do. Just don’t expect a ton from him for the first couple seasons.

I think the Jazz need to focus on developing Alec Burks and Trey Burke and let Exum come along verrrrrrrrrry slowly

I’m willing to bet Exum has similar numbers in his second summer league season…

He’s super young. This is an adjustment period. I really wouldn’t be reading to much into summer league. I saw him play last night in person and he’s got great size and quickness. All of the tools are there, he’s just unsure of what to do with it right now. He seems really bent on getting his teammates involved.

Great size for a pg yes but as a SG not really. He’s only 6’4 and some change at best (stood next to him while my boy interviewed him before he went on stage for that starters show).  I never thought and still don’t think he’s going to be a super star although I think he’s going to be pretty good due to his basketball IQ

6ft4.5 barefoot at the combine….Which makes him 6ft5.75/6ft6 in shoes. So he definetely has SG size considering that 6ft9.5 wingspan. Its not like you can accurately guess someones hieght just by meeting them….

Exum never played pro ball over here, he played high school ball. James Ennis and Sam Young played pro school ball over here.

Exum looked gassed early on, his body isn’t used to playing basketball games yet after sitting out for so long.

Give him a season to get his legs back and you’ll see, he showed flashes of his extreme quickness and first step.

I think people put way to much into how guys play in summer league. Trey Burke had a horrible summer league last year yet still had a solid rookie season. Sometimes guys play great in the summer but don’t show up during the regular season.

We should remember the kid just turned 19 a few days ago, and still has a lot to learn. He needs to get stronger and improve his jumper, but he has the talent and physical gifts to be a special player in time.

Exum has struggled so far.. That should be expected.  He hasn’t played anywhere close to the level of competition that we have in the states, whether it would be college or even the NBDL.  He still has a lot of time to deelop. but people need to be realistic that there is a sharp learning curve from playing in Australia to playing against the greatest athletes in the world.

The people you’re comparing him to (Rice, Hardaway etc) are all second year players. He shouldn’t be compared to players that have had a year of training/NBA experience. Look at someone like Shabazz Napier. He was considered more ‘pro ready’ because of his 4 years of college yet has struggled in summer league (both Orlando and Las Vegas). The point is the hardest position to transition from college to NBA, and Exum hasn’t played college ball. He hasn’t played any pro ball in Australia, only HS level (which here is pretty darn poor). The fact that he’s shown flashes speaks volumes as to his potential.

Also, he is struggling with the increased fitness training and games with only a 1 or 2 day turnaround. In HS he would have had 1 game a week. Give him time to increase his fitness and get his legs and we will see what he is capable of.

ALL rookie point guards struggle in summer league, even the good ones. I agree he needs to be developed slowly, not dropped in the deep end, but I think from what I’ve seen he is going to be a good player in the NBA for years to come.

"Lauded as the second coming of Christ"

It was never the majority opinion he was the best prospect, every knew that there were clear cut prospects better then him, and all his supporters said that he would struggle his first season adjusting from international tournament play and Australian high school competition. Of course he didnt light the house on fire with his first high calibre action, he’s never played anyone near this good. Give the kid a break

He also had some of the best +/- stats for the Jazz at Summer League. Whenever he was running the point offense seemed to run much more smoothly than when Burke was doing it. His decision making and BBIQ are pretty good and he gets his teammates involved. His execution on offense(shooting, finishing specifically) has been quite bad, but he consistently made the right plays with ball in his hands.

A big part of his bad numbers, I think was his conditioning. He seemed exhausted and gasping for air in pretty much every game after two quarters of play(and most of his games could really be divided into two – first half where he showed flashes and some good vision and playmaking, and second half where he was grabbing for his jersey and trying to not pass out on the court).

He definitely needs to work on that and on core strenght. Don’t forget that he hasn’t played 5-on-5 basketball for 8 months or so and the last time he played he was playing against high-school Australian kids. I think he’s probably the player with the highest jump of quality of opposition in Summer League and it showed. I think getting himself in good shape and working on his strenght alone would help him enormously and will increase his efficiency and with time he’d get used to the physicality of the game.

He also showed great first step and lateral quickness, as well as some nice defensive plays, although he would need to work on his defensive consistency. His shot and left-hand handle need some work too.

The thing we shouldn’t forget though is that he’s young and he was drafted with the clear idea that he’d be a project for the future and not someone who would be an instant game-changer for the Jazz. If you were expecting him to be a beast from the very start, you simply didn’t have realistic expectations.

From what I hear from Jazz management, they seem to be set on throwing him in with the wolves from the very start in order for him to start adjusting to the game in the NBA, similar to what the Bucks did with Giannis, even though people were saying similar things about him(young, project, etc). He probably won’t be starting but I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets 22-27 minutes a game in his first season. And if he improves massively by the end of the season he might even get a few starts.

Its summer league, yeah its the first time we can see young guys who just got drafted play in the NBA. But they aren’t even real games. They don’t count towards the regular season they are just there to further help the young guys develop, and give teams an early taste of what they got out of their draft picks. But again, the games don’t count, nor do the stats. Once the summer league is over with all the averages go back to zero, and we have another month or two to wait to see the rookies again. And that’s when it really counts. That’s when we can see just how good these rookies are against some real competition.

Just look at Ian Clarke. Remember from last year’s summer league in Vegas he put on a storm for the Warriors, then the Jazz picked him up, and this past season was not that great for him. He was stuck behind Burke, who had a very solid season despite a poor first summer league, and he was also stuck behind John Lucas. He ended up averaging 3 pts per game 0.7 assists and 0.8 boards per game. Not great numbers after a superb summer league. So a great summer league doesn’t always mean a great player. The Jazz don’t even have to bring him back next year, his contract isn’t guarateed. He had an okay summer league, but I think they do bring him back in the end, and I think he will beat out Lucas for the backup point guard role behind Burke. (Exum will start at SG alongside Burke)

I am absolutely certain that depsite a poor summer league from both Exum and Burke, they will still have solid seasons. In fact, if Exum does start alongside Burke like I expect then I think he will challenge the ROY favorite, Jabari Parker. Do I think he’ll win it? Probably not, but I think he will challenge him for it just like Burke did the previous year with Oladipo and the eventual ROY, MCW. Just you watch come November and December we will all be raving about how great Exum looks alongside Burke and his poor summer league will be a thing of the past.

no exum was  worth trading mcw just to draft a lot of ppl said.

    exum was a young Jordan

exum was so great and couldn’t be passed on even though a  vast amount of ppl haven’t seen extensive footage on him I was crucified when I mentioned that fact.

I would have been really surprised if exum had a great summer league I expect him not to reach the loftty expectation set upon him.

I expected him to struggle hes very fast  I see but he just stands around.

I watched all of the Jazz summer league games and I was disapointed in Exum but I also saw the potential and I’m confident he will develop and show that he is worthy of how high he was picked. One thing I think was and is a problem is he needs to play the point, he isn’t good at the 2, when he plays along side Burke he defers and lets Burke be the leader and the player to initiate everything, Exum started the last game at point and although he struggled shooting he played much better and was more assertive. That is what he needs to do all the time and we would see more of what he can do. I ‘m not sure what to think about him playing the 2 along side Burke, if I were the Jazz coaches I would have Exum be the point when every he is in the game, he plays much better when he initiates the offense and has to take responsibility to make things happen. Burke can be the shooter and play off of Exum, I doubt that will happen to start but that is what I would do, Exum sees that court and passes better than Burke now and that should only improve with playing time.

It’s a base point. Of all of the players in the 2014 class, he came in with the least experience playing at a very high level of opposition. For young rookies, I feel Summer League is merely a starting point. I’m curious to see what kind of improvement he makes in a few months when we see him in the pre-season.

the summer league stars have 2+ years of College ball under their belts. I’m not a huge Exum fan but he’ll need a few years in the league before we have any idea whether he can play.
