valentineI had an idea about how to make basketball more exciting to watch, and I dont think Ive ever heard it before so I’d like to trademark this concept in the process.
It’s titled – Rip’n’Run Basketball
The main difference is that teams can make substitutions on the fly, in the same way it works with Hockey. Play doesnt have to stop.
Teams can substitute players any time, on any possession. Players simply just run off the court.
It would feature ‘line changes’ so that ‘defensive players’ run off immediately as possession is secured.
Think about it: Hack-a-shaq would be eliminated. Guys like James Harden dont have to play defense. Guys like Ben Wallace dont have to play offense.
It all happens in the 24 second shotclock and would create a frantic but strategic style of play. Possibly with more dunks.
What do you guys honestly think? Would you at least like to see it implemented for 1 D-League Preseason Game?

Rip256The second initiative I’m trademarking is the 3-point "Showdunk".
It works by giving players a chance to signal that they are attempting a spectacular highlight dunk by gesturing in the same way an NFL player calls for a Fair Catch.
Then, if 2 out of 3 referees believe it to be worthy of a 3-pt Showdunk, they raise 3 fingers in the air.
Its a way of bringing the Dunk Contest to a game.
It would normally happen on fast breaks, but athletic players could do it in half court sets if theyre good enough.
If the referees do not award 3pts, then a normal 2 point fg is awarded.

ChrispyParticipantthere shoukd be a rule that if a player jumps from beyond half court, does a full twist in the air while baking cookies, then dunks the ball and serves fresh chocolate chip cookies to both benches then that player gets 50 points for his team.

OhCanada-ParticipantI actually thoroughly enjoyed thinking about the original idea and how different that would make the game. I wouldn’t wanna see it implemented but it would be nice if you could do it in a video game.

ZachAttackParticipantThis guy really isn’t T Rex. This guy is an Aussie. One who only likes Aussie players, like Matt Dellavedova, Dante Exum, and Joe Ingles.
I can’t believe that you’d bring my fellow Jazz fan down to the level of T Rex… come on Magic. You’re better than that
There’s only 4 T Rexes out there and we all know them. No one can replace him… Until his account gets deleted again…

Rip256So none of you guys are down with the ‘Showdunk’ idea?
Imagine how exciting fast breaks would be…and then the suspense when referees are determining to award an extra point. Fans would go bananas.
Zachattack would lose his mind at a Karl Malone ‘special delivery’ dunk for 3.

ZachAttackParticipantI actually wouldn’t mind the idea.
It would be EXTREMELY complicated in the beginning but I think that if you tried it out in a few preseason games for the heck of it, it wouldn’t be too bad. I wouldn’t change the whole game of basketball for it though.
I think it’s a lot more running which would tire the players out more, and their is a higher possibility for injury in a game like that and so that’s why we couldn’t really take the idea too seriously.
Unless I’m misunderstanding something though
On a side note:
What’s going on with the podcast right now?

How about making a thread Cynthia. I’d love to hear one of your opinions for a change.

Memphis MadnessParticipantD League tweaks: 4 point line. Past the current 3 point line, so about 30 feet out. That would be fun. So, your favorite D League team (if there is such a thing) is never out of the game.
20 second shot clock.
Jump ball at the start of each quarter. At the start of each overtime too. Keep things fun.
3 minute overtimes. Overtimes are too long, I think. It already turns into a death march. Just make it quicker.
On free throws, as long as you take off from behind the foul line you can do whatever you want. Take a running start, and go for the dunk, do a long, floater layup. Whatever. This could be really fun, or really dangerous.
Another thing: if you want to discourage intential fouling why don’t you move the foul line up a little bit?
It would make the free throw a bit easier. And, it would also make the lane smaller so less congestion inside.
This would reward good free throw shooters, discourage intential fouling, and make the game more wide open.
Give guys 7 fouls, but any foul after the fifth foul would give the other team a penalty free throw shot. So, basically the 6th and 7th fouls would result in an extra free throw each, but guys would have an extra foul to work with. I think fouling out is kinda cheap, but you can’t reward hacking away at guys…
Ok, what about NO full timeouts? Only 20 second time outs? Same number of total timeouts BUT ONLY 20 second timeouts… Get the game moving along.
Another thing that would discourage intentional fouling would be making fouls AWAY FROM THE BALL when your team is in the penalty worth 3 shots. The guy who gets fouled takes the first two, BUT if you want you can get ANYONE ON THE TEAM to take the 3rd bonus shot.
Expanding the court would help, especially where the corner 3 shot is. If you can widen the court then I would make the 3 point line the same distance all the way around. But, if you just reduce the lane by making the foul line shorter, and by introducing a 4 point shot, you open up the floor anyway.
Other than having guys camped out for 30 footers, another thing the 4 point line (with the smaller lane, too) would be to get the high pick and rolls/pick and pops initiated farther out, probably just past the 4 point line. That would get the action flowing earlier in a 20 second shot clock. These changes would also incrementally help the mid-range game. Expanding the deep game and decreasing the paint, would force some guys into the 15-18 foot mid-range territory.
