I saw a comment on another thread about players playing good in their contract year and it made me think of something I always wondered, is this true? And if so how strong is the corelation?

I am by no means a statistical analyst, so I wanted to know those on here (there are a few) who are in this area can shed any light on this?

I would have thought this would be an area which would have been looked at.

    Thanks in advance.

I say type it into Google and you’ll find several articles discussing the contract year. While most point to the fact that players give more effort in their contract year, I believe it is important to distinguish with regard to which effort.

All players give a 100% during the season, not maybe every game but in general there is not a whole lot of difference there between being in a contract year or not. I believe the main difference is that players in their contract year put more effort before the season starts because they want to make a good impression, giving them a better conditioning than other years. This gives them an edge during the rest of the season, which translates into better stats and performance.

This article discusses the contract year in baseball, which deals with the same phenomenon.

As I believe in the idea that contract year players are better trained during the off-season it would be interesting to see whether players in a contract year perform better during the 4th quarter or the second half of the season because they invested more during the off-season. If this would be the case my hypothesis is confirmed, namely that the phenomenon is explained by more effort during the offseason. However, as also discussed in the baseball-article, there are a lot of confounds and issues with running such a study.

Funny how Monta Ellis is often a free agent after subpar seasons. Last year(sure it was a player option, but his team didn’t want him there anymore,so he didn’t have much of a choice),and in the summer of 2013 after that weird season in Milwaukee where players apparently almost fought in the locker room after a playoffs game.
