all this talk about who is worth max deals etc. got me thinking, what are some contracts where as soon as you heard about it you were thinking the team was crazy for overpaying. And dont just play hindsite and talk about deals that looked bad after the fact, i mean ones where you thought it was bad before the ink dried.

The first one that comes to mind is Brian Grant. In the 1999-2000 season, he played 63 games and averaged 7 points and 6 rebounds. He was a solid role player on a very deep portland team. But he was in no way shape or form a all-star caliber piece or something you built around. He had a 4 year 40 mill deal with portland and he DECLINED it. I thought what the hell is this guy thinking. Hes turning down 10 mill per year after averaging 7 and 6 (right around 12 and 7 for his career up to that point) But it turned out he had pat riley drooling as he soon signed a 7 year 86 million dollar contract with the heat. He put up a career best 15 and 9 that first season in miami but would never score more then 10 a game after that.

I actually don’t think thats too rediculous. 8 million a year is how much Rodney Stuckey, Mo Williams, and Jameer Nelson make, and Lin has a good chance to be better than those guys this year.

Now if we’re talking rediculous contracts, his teammate Omer Asik is a prime example.

Bulls giving Eddie Robinson a 5 year 32 million dollar contract in 2001 was a wtf moment for me.

Also, Jerome James getting 5 years 30 million in 2005 because he had a few good games in the playoffs the previous year.

    Awful contracts for unproven players.

j Joe Johnson – sure he is a good player but he is 31yo. His best years were behind him. If it had been a few years ago in his peak that would be fine. He also has not done very well in the playoffs to be a max player or superstar. His contract expires in 2016 where he will be 35. I bet he will be putting up 10-14ppg in his last 2 season of the contract…

Yeah that was a risky call given that he was coming off that major knee injury but he was just 26 years old and before the injury was coming off a 3 year span where he was one of the top players in the game. If the Wizard’s hadn’t offered him a contract that high somebody else would have probably given him almost as much.

I don’t think the Lin contract is as bad as some people say it is. Sure it’s very risky given how few games he has started but if he plays near as well as he did in those games then his contract is a bargain. Even if he doesn’t play up to the contract, 3 years is a relatively short period of time; After his second season he would be an expiring contract and would at least be valuable as trade bait.

I remember Jim McIlvaine being a terrible signing. Coming off his second season in 1996 where he averaged 2.3 PPG and 2.9 RPG in 15 MPG with the Bullets, the Sonics gave him a seven year $33.6 million deal.

Big men always seem to get the most awful contracts. Raef Lafrentz was given a seven year $70 million contract for being a bad starting center, Jerome James with 60 mill over 5 years, Omer Asik this year etc…
