bobbybParticipantAre players in the summer league ( that dont have regular contracts) have any obligation to sign with that team or not. For example Could the Knicks make an offer to right now Ewing JR or does Olando have like a first shot.
Also RE Miami Heat i know they are under the cap this year, but what about years 3 ,4,5 dont they have increased built in . Wont they be a mile of the cap?

Imaking6004ParticipantIts free game for summerleague players as long as they don’t have contracts because they are still free agents. Any team can offer them a contract. As for the second question don’t really understand what youre saying.

NashyMingParticipant1) Summer league player signed some summer league contract, they can go to any team they want after the summer league games. These contracts have nothing to do with real NBA contracts (I think).
2) Miami Heat has a lot of cap space this year (50 mil+). That’s why they are able to sign 3 maximum players. Originally, if they sign Bosh and LBJ directly, then Miami would have to fill the rest of the roster with minimum players as the three max deal would basically max out the salary cap (the Heat would have to renounce the Bird rights for all its players in order to fit the 3 max contract). All 3 players would have to make significant pay cut in order to allow the Heat to sign other free agents at more than minimum.
However, Miami was able to get S&T deals for LBJ and Bosh. Since LBJ and Bosh are S&T, they are considered as players signed under the Bird rights, which allow Miami to sign them without renouncing the Bird rights of its own free agents (Dorell Wright, Haslem, Anthony, QRich, etc.).
Therefore, Miami can offer more than minimum for its own free agents. That’s why they can now sign Haslem for more than minimum.
After Bosh, Wade, LBJ, and Haslem signings, the Heat can also use the Mid-level exception and the Bi-Annual exception (if they didn’t use it last year, and I think they didn’t) to sign players.
The MLE is approx. 5.5 mil for the first year. The BE is approx. 2mil for the first year.
Obviously, after all the signings, the Heat would be significantly over the cap (but who cares?) for the next a few years. Any upgrade would to be done through draft, trades, the use of MLE & BE in the next a few years.
