Another example of how the Draft Combine can change some thoughts on a player. On this site, one of Cody Zeller’s weaknesses was that he wouldn’t be a shot blocker in the league “due to his average wingspan and vertical explosiveness”.

For the newest scouting report on Zeller, the first strength they listed is that he is a ” Bigman with an excellent basketball IQ and all around athlete”.

My point is that the combine changed the perception of Zeller being an average athlete to that of him having excellent athleticism just because of the a few tests, most importantly the vertical jump tests. A lot of people say the Combine makes no real difference on someone’s draft stock and that we already know what we’re getting, but I’m sure this new perception of Zeller will help boost his stock.

I remember this happened to Harden and Cody may go top 5 because his skills and strengths were not able to be fully displayed in college. If those Aldridge comparisons are close than no way he should fall past pick 5 in this draft.

It sucks knowing his stock is rising, because I’d love to see him fall to my Blazers to play alongside Aldridge. He’s a bit more mobile then Aldridge, but probably not as good of a defender, yet. He’d take a lot of pressure off Aldridge down low, although he wouldn’t provide the post defender the Blazers desperately need.

Just because Aran Smith or Chad Ford dropped him during the year doesn’t mean the league did. He’s a top 5 talent.

Zeller didn’t improve in one category from his freshman season to sophomore season, that worries me a little in regards to his ceiling. He is also very light at 230, without a frame to add much more, so you could argue that cancels out his athleticism since he will be getting pushed all over the place down low. 8 seems fair.

He’s bigger than KG, Bosh, Anthony Davis, Noel, Hickson, lots of so called bigs.

His performance at the combine doesn’t change the fact that he won’t be a shot blocker at the next level. His performance also doesn’t change the fact that he’ll still struggle finishing against length.

It takes more than being able to jump high to be a good shot blocker. How is Blake Griffin as a shot blocker?
Length is a must have. Quick leaping ability and the ability to contest shots without leaving the ground help as well. The combine does not measure quick leaping ability.

Completely right. It’s really sad how scouts still let the combine change their minds about players. Bigs should only jump to contest a shot if someone’s trying to dunk on them. NBA guards love going to the line, making their lives easier if they know that Zeller will elevate on everything.

My main issue with Zeller is that it takes him a while to get off the floor. He’s someone who needs to bend his knees in order utilize his thigh muscles fully. Shot blocking demands quick reflexes coupling with the ability to bounce up in rapid succession.

the combine is full of sh*t… we already knew he was a good athlete… not very good at Indiana but he ran the court like a deer for a big and was never vertically challenged as a big unless… oh wait.. if it was against nba caliber athletes… he still has t rex arms and still isn’t a tough post player…. look at kendall marshall at UNC.. ppl always questioned his quickness and jumping ability.. but then has like a 37 inch max vert at the combine and becomes a lottery pick and only played 48 games and 14 mpg this yr
