Mr. HookShotParticipantThe Spurs (20th payroll) just come off a championship, led by superior coaching from Popovich. Seeing several teams with ballooned payrolls pay millions to underperforming players, my question is why the best coach in the league who basically won the championship for them (together with Bufford) is only paid $6 million? Most people agree Popovich would have won a championship with the Thunder, and I would say both the Pacers and the Nets would have been in the finals with Popovich leading the way. Moreover, I saw in an earlier topic someone who made the comparison between Pop’s salary and what a player like Splitter (>$8 million) gets paid.
Why not pay >$10 million for a known commodity like Popovich (and I would try to lure in Bufford as well while your at it) as that this year showed again that will pay off? Especially considering coaching money does not account for the cap space.

Scrooge McDuckParticipantPopovich is worth almost as much as any of the Spurs players. The players probably have more powerful lawyers and a stronger labor union on their side.

trelos6ParticipantFisher is getting 5 mil per year as a coach. I doubt he ever got that much as a player.

Magic JordanParticipantYou don’t have to pay coaches that much because that is not what the market sets. And by all accounts there are 3 maybe 4 coaches tops that are undervalued. Pop is in a league of his own, if he wanted to he could command 10 to 15 mil a year I imagine if he made it known he wanted to leave. A team would pay that to poach him from the Spurs. But that is what makes the Spurs so beautiful, nobody on that team would rather go elsewhere for more money. They are all selfless and it starts with RC Buford and Pop.
So to sum it up, I just don’t think there are enough coaches that are worth 10 million dollars for the market to be constantly dishing out 10 mil per year coach contracts.

mixtape2003ParticipantIt’s prob the same reason their big 3 took paycuts to stay with the team. Only coach in the NBA was Phil that I know of that made 10 mil a year
