Dwane Casey was fired today, who’s a good candiate to replace him?

I think Hawks former coach Mike Budenholzer is a good candiate if he doesn’t take the Bucks job.

Also Brett Brown is in the final year of his contract, Sixers talking extention, does he deserve it? Quesitonable play calling against the Celtics..

Dwane Casey is very unlucky and could well soon be in line for another very good job. The Raptors are likely looking for someone who can take them that extra bit further into legit contention.

Mike Budenholzer did a good job at the Hawks and took them to one Conference Final so he hasn’t gone further than Dwane ever did but has to be considered.

I’d doubt Brett Brown would want to leave a team with the 76ers upside.

If the Raptors are looking for a proven title winning coach then might offers go to Rick Carlisle whose Dallas team are in a big rebuild and even Doc Rivers as their teams aren’t in contention at the moment. I’d say Erik Spoelstra is fairly happy in Miami and could well get the full control of Front Office too when Pat Riley eventually retires.

The interesting thing could be a call to a top college coach, mostly they are associated with rebuilding teams but if an older top college coach who my have done it virtually all in the NCAA fancied a top NBA job with a contending team then this could be it.

I think Bud is a good coach for the Raptors. I’m done with Brett Brown, I would love Legler or a younger coach to replace him. His play calling is atrocious

Sixers will extend Brett Brown. Yes, there was questionable play calling against the Celtics, but just getting the Sixers from a lottery team last year to a 3 seed this year and EC semifinals this year is quite the accomplishment on its own. In my book, they’ve exceeded expectations so I’d be shocked if he didn’t receive his extension.

As for the Raptors new coaching position, I think it will be Budenholzer or Stackhouse. But my bet is Budenholzer since he actually has experience getting a team to the ECF and could possibly get them further. Casey is a good regular season coach but his players usually fold come playoff time. Budenholzer doesn’t allow his players to fold. I think Casey is more suited for the Pistons. Just getting Detroit to make the playoffs as any seed would make a big difference.

I think it will be Stackhouse or some other up and coming young coach. I see this as a precursor to Toronto blowing up its roster. If they were going to return their core, they would keep Casey. Given all the changes Casey made between this year and last year (increased switches on defense, shooting more threes on offense, loosing the rotations, ect.) I do not think you could argue this is a case of a coach and their system not meshing with the roster. I think the front office sees the team drastically changed how it plays this year (compared to last year) and still got swept by the Cavs. Therefore, I think the front office has decided this team’s ceiling is basically the second round. I expect the Raptors to trade one (or both) of Lowry and DeRozan and try develop a younger roster. If they are going the youth route, I think they will bring in a young coach that can grow with the team.

76ers should trade Fultz for Popavich. I would like to see Nate Mcmillan some where other than Indiana. Stan Van Gundy in Toronto….say whatever you want about him but he took Dwight to the finals…

I would love to see coach Cal in the NBA.

I wouldn’t do that he stinks at that level-See his first run with the Nets.

He is better at the college level as he always has the proverbal carrot of "Come here I will get you to the NBA”

That doesn’t work when they are already there…The only reason players like him so much is he teaches them how to get there/grooms them for the attention/media and doesn’t really develop them as players..

i agree with what Brett Brown has been saying.  They need a third piece to contend for a title.  If Colangelo doesn’t pursue that piece in FA or via trade, don’t expect Brown and the Sixers management to come to terms on an extension.

I can see it going both ways: 76ers continue the growth from within and plan on Fultz, Simmons and Embiid becoming the big 3.  Or attack the offseason in pursuit of LeBron or PG13 in FA or Beal/Kawhi/Klay via trade.  Only way they can mess this up is to give all your money to Redick and third level guys…that would suck

He’s been in Toronto forever, and even though it’s not deserved, you can’t keep wheeling out the same coach and expect players to listen.

Dwayne isn’t an elite coach,  but he’s a very good one. He’s proven to do a few things quite well:

      1) Knows how to manage a roster: He never abused minutes for his stars, and always gets the bench involved. This past year was not an isolated incident.

      2) Gets the most out of his players: Lowry bloomed under him. Derozan exceeded expectation. Van Fleet went from obscurity to a legit rotational player. The list goes on.

      3) Gets players to play defense: Toronto has been a solid defense team under Casey. Bad defenders try to play defense to the best of their abilities… Except for Bargnani.

      4) Accepts outside help from coaching staff: Toronto’s offense took off this past season because he ceded responsibility to his coaching staff. It allowed him to focus on defense and roster management.

I see Minnesota as being a good spot for Casey once they wise up and get rid of Thibs who’s failed in the above four categories.

How is he not elite?  He took the worst franchise and made them contenders in 5 years and they stayed that way for 2 more years. Even after being canned they are still in somewhat contention to finish 1st in the East next year if they dont tank. Im wondering if Im just being biased but Id say he is elite. He’s the coach of the year.

I’ll put it this way. There are 30 head coaches in the league, so no more than five should be classified as elite. (That’s the top 16 percent) I put Popovich, Stevens, Carlisle, Spolestra and D’antoni ahead of Casey easily.

Then you’d have to truly convice me that Kerr, Budz, Gentry, Mcmillan and Stotts aren’t better than him. Again, Casey’s a good coach. I wish the Knicks hired him over Fizdale. But he’s not a top-tier one.

      Yep, that’s tough for Casey.

I think he should have been fired years ago….but not this time.

Improved the team record every year in his 7 seasons, from 23 wins to a franchise high 59 wins, sure he would have had trouble to extend.

Never lost 2 str8 home games, or 3 str8 games this season…until lebron showed up.

Best offense in the east since the early 90’s, who saw that coming last summer ?.

Platoon system, developing, trusting his late first rounders, making them nba players, contributors.

Way more treys and assists(dead last, last season)…..meritocracy in PT.

He did things i didn’t believe he was capable of, he improved as a 61yo coach LOL….

Preseason predictions, i thought they were a 50 wins team at best, like 4th in the east, not 2nd record in the league or 10 more wins than the 3rd team in the west.

The 1st game man, how costly, is he fired if he loses in 6 ?.

On the other hand, 7 years is a rarity nowadays, only 3 active coaches lasted longer, 2 of them are elite and won agaisnt lebron, the 3rd one never faced lebron and hardly won 1 PO series without him.

Casey in Detroit, maybe the best fit both ways, maybe he would trust the pistons picks van gundy burned without being a PO team anyway.

A shame the way Van Gundy acted with his powers, sportily, financially, short term, long term, he spat on the franchise, hopefully it was his last gig.

Someone had to be the Fall guy. To bad it was Casey. Reports say Casey was berated the the GM after game 3 lost.  Toronto has been in the nba for 23 yrs and have had three 50 win seasons all under Casey.

I think Mike Budenholzer takes the Raptors job.  I had orginally had him going to Bucks, but I think he would take Raptors over it.  That would leave my new pick for the Bucks job as David Blatt.

Firing Casey really does nothing. No coach will be able to fix the issue which is Lebron James bullying Lowry and Derozan. You could bring Popovich in and Toronto would still lose next year. Clevelands only going to get better and add more pieces they also have a top 10 pick as ammo to bring in more for Lebron to play off of. If you are going to hold Casey accountable for losing they better be willing to do a full reset and trade Derozan and Lowry for prospects in this years draft because Philly, Boston, Indiana and Milwaukee are projected to be much better next year and next years draft does not look too deep. Id honestly rather see them tank like Philly did then watch them get swept by Cleveland every year and thats how bad its gotten.

DeRozan didn’t really show up in the Cavs series and had a big minus stat when he was on court in the play offs. It’s not just they came up against the greatest modern day player it’s more the outlook with Philly, Boston likely to come on strong regardless of what LBJ does.

Lloyd Pierce has gone to the Hawks so Brett Brown has lost a key assistant but I don’t think Brett is especially an upgrade over Dwane.

The Raps are maxed out in cap for another two years so blowing it up would be a big move but if they had wanted to let things run their course they may have kept hold of Dwane and looked to be a 50 odd win play off team who maybe won first round but advanced no further.

Valanciunas will be due a big renewal next summer so that will be interesting to watch. DeRozan is on a flat salary but owed $84 mmillion across next 3 seasons. Sure he is a top player but would a contender see him as a guy who could lead a team to a title and there is still that slight lack of 3 point scoring.

Lowry has an even bigger salary and is 32 now so to move him would be hard, Ibaka would have interest but has been bounced around a few teams so would they get a good return on him I wonder?

Toronto is disinterested in playing against cleveland I think, but I think it’s not CAsey’s fault, it’s all their fault, and LBJ, they look like hy were cursed or something when facing LBJ

Casey did not deserve this.  Theycould of ended up in the east finals if not for a  different seeding.

They ran into a red hot Lebron.

This happens too often, they were one of the best teams in the NBA – alot of teams would love to be in their situation.

    Coaches and players have bonds…

Ujiri really doesnt come across well after this considering the way he has addressed the media since the loss. If they are firing Casey this should signal they are going to clean house and trade their all stars too, otherwise they are really unfairly shifting a lot of  blame onto the coach. Thats unexpected from the Raptors. I thought they were better than this.

Casey once said hed retire to Seattle after leaving Toronto. I hope he changes his mind and  takes one more job, crossing the border to coach Detroit. He wouldnt have to move his family.

While I don’t necessarily agree with the decision, I can understand why Casey was fired. It’s hard to loss 10 consecutive playoff games against the same opponent including being swept two years in a row and still get to keep your job.

My main gripe against him as a coach is his bad underutilization of Valanciunas. He could have definitely done more to develop him and feature him much more prominently in the offense.

He’s a good coach and will mostly likely find another job very soon.

Dwane is a respected coach and with a number of vacancies out there will likely get some interest. I’d agree Detroit could well have a look at him, Charlotte possibly too.

Coach of the year means nothing obviously lol. But anyhow Cassey failed to elevate this team and you can only have so many get out of jail free cards to save your Job. Personally I would go full rebuild with this team trade everyone away and start fresh with a good player development coach. As this team has met its ceiling.Which is probably a top 3 seed in the east but nothing greater than ECF or semi’s if they got a healthy lebron team. As lebron has clearly figured out how to abuse that D-cassey system..

If I was Mike B though if I had a choice of Magic,Bucks or Raptors for a coaching job I would go:

Bucks first: They have the better pieces and a potential Franchise player in Giannias,a more promising roster than Raptors and could be more open to change post Coach Kidd..If you wanted to stay in the playoff race vs Development route.

Magic Second-They have a lot of youth and could have another top 5 pick which you would get to help develop…The only thing is this though they do have a randomly shaped roster which you would have to offer some input into how to clean up a little….Assuming the GM gave you a lot of say in the Matter.

Last Raptors: If you had the same roster you are cuffed to what you can do and their isn’t exactly a whole lot of picks/young talent on the immediate horizon..If you had to endure a tank Job/Rebuild then your record gets ruined-see Vogel straight from Pacers to Magic to how that can go..

Brett brown Contract Deal or No Deal: Simpley put you give him 3 year deal(2+1 being a team option) as the guy deserves to see this thing through as he endured a Trash can roster and when given a good one he did deliver them a top 3 seed + a Eastern confernce semi in his first trip to the playoffs.  Two things will need to change though: Simmons takes or makes Jumpers as teams will back of or clog the paint up for him otherwises(making him not as effective as he could be) and they need a legit consistent 3rd option(Dario is their 4th) so either SF or SG depending on what Rob C is playing..Once that is sorted and Lebron is out of the East(retired or goes West) they 76ers baring injuries will be legit Contenders for it all.

But if the 76ers bail on him I would take a legit look at Mike B or Stan V as both could some crazy things with Simmons and Embiid.
