tli232Today, one of the case studies we did in class was a case on the contrasting coaching styles of Bob Knight and Coach Kryzewski. {Coach K: A Matter of Heart and Coach Knight: The Will to Win. Harvard Business Publishing}
I thought it was really interesting to hear what business school students thought of which leader they thought was more effective on and off the basketball court. Some of their arguments were way off base.
Obviously, I thought of you guys and I’m curious as to what you think about the issue.
Do you believe Coach K or Coach Knight is more effective in today’s NCAA and in the 1980s. What criteria would you use to measure success?
As a player, would you rather play for Bob Knight or Coach K? As the administration of a university, would you rather hire Bob Knight or Kryzewski? Why?

llperezfrom what i have seen and read of bob knight, i wouldnt want to play for him. Im sure every college coach is a hard a$$ on his players and gets on them, but knight crossed some lines that wouldnt sit well with me. I believe the best way for any adult who wants to set an example for youth is to do so by their actions more so then their words and knight throwing chairs and putting his hands on people and swearing all the time in front of cameras and his infamous comment about how if a women is being raped she should just enjoy it. Those are not things that provide a positve example.
I really dont know much about coach k behind the scenes, but people seem to respect him.
I have no idea if i answered your question.

Im Your FatherParticipantWell, obviously as a Duke fan I’m biased, but I think Krzyzewski is a sort of improved version of Knight if you will. He learned under Knight and you can see that in his intensity and he certainly has the reputation of being a hard ass. But at the same time, he is more under control. He is also a much better recruiter than Bobby Knight was.

midwestbbscoutParticipantCoach K is one of the greatest coaches of all time but really Knight is the best…..he revolutionized the game on both ends of the floor with principles that are still used by almost every coach in the world…..

tli232I’m wondering if any of you would consider hiring bob Knight for a coaching job. Also, I personally think that Bob Knight gets the most out of his players, as opposed to Coach K. DO you guys think that’s a valid criteria for valuing either coach?

McWinningParticipantI think Bob Knight would definetly be better at making a bad team overachieve.
But Coach K is safer, and a better recruiter, and always gets lots out of his teams as well.
Id take Coack K.

Im Your FatherParticipantI mean, part of being a good coach is maintaining some semblance of composure and not throwing chairs across the floor.
