GTS 23Participantmany predict next season is going to be a lot different than previous years when the celtics were a championship team. what should they do with KG and ray allen? what about jeff green? the celtics already have a core of young players (bradley, bass, stiemsma, jajuan johnson) with rondo being the leader and pierce providing the experience that every team wants. having two first round picks (#20,21) helps a lot with rebuilding. who should they draft and what position?

PulseGlazerParticipantThey clearly draft BPA that isn’t a guard, right? The core of this club, most notably, KG, can be brought back if the price is right. This team is killer at developing talent, so hope a high upside guy slides seems their best bet.

CavsFan07ParticipantAgree with Pulse. If Harkless, Waiters, or Wroten is there, wouldn’t be surprised to see them selected as a young player with potential. Fab Melo is a serious possibility as well solely because his size and needing a replacement at the C position.

beerandhiphopParticipantwe have jenkins already his name is etwaun moore and he’s a fringe player… God help the team that wastes a pick on jenkins. Never seen a unathletic 2 gaurd handle the ball so awful and people think this guys a 1st round pick because he can shoot? Well MAYBE if trajon langdon can go 14 anything can happen…. And if they draft another undersized 4 (Powe,Davis,Harongody) with zero upside i will rip my eyes out.. pray for harkless!

JoeWolf1I think Andrew Nicholson would be a good pick with one of their late 1st round picks. He can play in the post, handle the ball, and he’s got the length to be a shot blocker in the NBA. Not to mention he’s a 43% shooter from the college 3. He’s 6’9” with a wingspan over 7′ and has more upside than JaJuan Johnson, IMO.

mgreener_34ParticipantI think the Celtics will be able to retain Green for cheap, as I’ve seen him courtside at a couple of the Celtics games this year. Why would he be there if he wasn’t going to be on the team? With his addition the Celtics have three really good pieces to build around in Rondo, Bradley, and Green as well as Greg Steinsma if we’re able to keep him.
If the Celtics go far in the playoffs this year I could see them trying for just one more year, but the right thing to do would be blow it up. Let Allen walk, and have KG and Pierce stick around next year to help mentor who ever it is that they draft at 21 and 22.
I would love for them to package those picks and Allen to move up into the lottery, and grab a guy like Perry Jones if he slips that far. I could easily see Philly or Pheonix doing that deal if Jones or another good talent falls. If they can’t move up they need to take BPA who I think will probably be Nicolson like previously mention and Jeffery Taylor. Both are great athletes who play smart, and with Rondo as the PG the Celtics need to go after great athletes, so why not ones with high BBIQ’s?
I wouldn’t mind seeing Josh Smith in a Celtics uni either. There was that trade at the deadline that didn’t go through, and he is close to Rondo. The Celtics would have the cap space to take him on, and then watch out. That team would be a beast on D with Rondo, Bradley, and Josh Smith.
One can dream right?

Meditated StatesParticipantDon’t think it will happen though. Move up and grab PJ3. Resign KG and watch PJ go to school with KG the teacher. If not Eezeli had the rebounding and size we need. Tyler Zeller would he a nice pick to if he is there. Austin Rivers might fit well with Rondo dishing but C’s got to trade up.

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantI wouldn’t be surprised if they draft Quincy Miller in the 1st round. A guy with so much potential, all he needs is the right kind of people around him to teach him the game. The Big3, Rondo, and Doc Rivers seem perfect.

the I in winParticipantI think trying to move up a little and take Zeller would be a good fit for both player and team. Celtics add an at least average shot blocker with good length that can run the floor to make fast breaks even easier for rondo.

mj23mj23besteverParticipantimo the celts should take fab melo with one their 2 1st rd picks they need size very badly and he brings tremendous upside as a shot blocker and rebounder

TheDagger40ParticipantWith 2 first round picks, the Celtics’ future looks bright especially if they can retain KG and/or Ray Allen.
With the first pick they could go get a high upside wing player like Harkless or PJ3 (if he falls)
With the second pick, they could a strong big man like Ezeli or Melo.

capecodderParticipantAbove, I suggested Jenkins or Harkless….I meant Taylor Jenkins’ teammate

Chilbert arenasParticipantWith the culture in Boston they need guys who are going to get down on defense so I think Harkless is the perfect pick and also Melo would fit well, Rondo will make those guys better on the offensive end. Dion Waiters and Terrence Jones seem to be good fits as well if they fall. They both have that edge to them that the Celtics typically flourish with.

PulseGlazerParticipantI guarantee Melo is either a bust or nearly a bust. Syracuse bigs play too much zone and it seems to really stunt their NBA development on the defensive and rebounding front. Given that those are the areas for which you draft Melo, I think he’s a waste of a draft pick.

HitsterParticipantAustin Rivers at around 13 looks a tempting trade up target with the 21st and 22nd picks maybe a team like the Bucks at 12 would look at this deal. Also if there was no-one Boston really fancied at 21 or 22 maybe they flip one of those picks for the Cavs two early 2nd rounders where they take a stasher.
If they do draft from position then I’d say they take an NBA ready guy with one pick and maybe a high upside guy with the 2nd one perhaps say Quincy Miller. Also I’d look to draft a big and maybe a swingman within those perameters.

omphalosParticipantWith Pierce getting older, the Celtics’ biggest concern is a guy who can create his own shot when the shot-clock is running down and the other team is clamping down defensively. It was never more apparent than game 5 in Atlanta; Pierce looked sluggish, and for all the brilliant passes Rondo was making, guys just couldn’t get free for open looks using a motion offense.
However, KG is on his last legs also, and they need a big to build around. Johnson is a role player at best, Bass is the weak link already with his terrible length and foul prone defense. Stiemsma is nice, but again, a role player.
Luckily, the Celtics will have cap room after KG and Ray Allen come off the books, and I think they should look to spend this season. Now, they could try and build through the draft, but outside of Quincy Miller and maybe Will Barton, nobody with stud potential is likely to be around in the late first round. So by all means, take Miller if he’s available and hope he can learn from Pierce while he’s still there.
However, when you’ve got a coach like Doc Rivers who can get the most out of his players – especially knuckleheads, a pass-first point guard who makes everyone around him better, and the history of the Celtics behind you, this free agent class can be a goldmine for a risk-taking GM.
The two needs of the Celtics could be filled with two players, who have poor track records, but huge upside in the right situation. I’m talking about Michael Beasley and Javale McGee.
Beasley is that go-to scorer the Celtics will need, he has better potential as a scorer than Jeff Green, is younger, and is likely cheaper, with the season he had in Minnesota. If any player, any team and any coach can get the most out of Beasley, it’s the Celtics.
McGee is a knucklehead, we know this, but as he’s showing in Denver against the Lakers, all he’s ever needed was strong leadership and a coach who can relate to him. George Karl can do that, but so can Doc Rivers. McGee is going to be a little more pricey, as he’s a restricted free agent, so the Celtics will have to overpay to get him, but it just might be worth it, especially if you can bring back KG to mentor him.
Going forward, you have a legitimate young core with championship calibre upside; Rondo, Bradley, Beasley and McGee. I know it’s a long shot, and I know it’s hard to imagine getting both McGee and Beasley, but as a Celtics fan, this would make me very, very excited for the aftermath of the Boston Three Party.

PulseGlazerParticipantI like the idea of Beasley in Boston a lot, especially if he bulks up again. Doc could probably get him defending.
