The Cleveland Cavaliers have traded Brendan Haywood and Mike Miller to the Portland Trail Blazers, according to Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski. For their trouble, the Blazers will receive the most favorable of Cleveland’s two second-round picks in 2019 and its second-round pick in 2020, per the Akron Beacon Journal’s Jason Lloyd.

Haywood has a non-guaranteed contract for next season worth $10.5 million. The Cavs were always going to trade him either for assets or a massive trade exception. They will get a trade exception, and another one for Miller’s $2.9 million. This will theoretically allow them to acquire additional assets for nothing in the next year.

So what to make of this? Bit suprised the Blazers are the team involved, and not the 76ers (Hinkie would do everything for additional picks). But all in all nice for Portland to pick up some future picks.

For the Cavs, this means they have two trade exceptions. Already speculation which player they could acquire with that? In terms of needs, their starting five is currently Irving – Shumpert – James – Love – Mozgov, with Williams, Thompson and Varejao as solid pieces from the bench. They could use a shooting SG, without giving up all to much. Maybe Eric Gordon is a good option; he was relatively healthy last year, shot almost 45% from three (5.2 attempts per game), and he might be had for a trade exception and a future pick.

Idk why the Pelicans would trade EJ (I suppose it’s good value) but he would be an absolutely perfect fit for the Cavs system. They could also theoretically now make that trade of the exception and varajao for Joe Johnson or another "go to" guy.

Jrue Holiday-Tyreke Evans combo doesn’t work,so they better keep EG,especially considering Holiday is seriously injury prone.

The Cavs have made a tidy tax saving by moving Miller, he will likely get brought out and may get offers from a few contenders in due course if he wants to play on.

I wonder if the Blazers might try to do something with Haywood’s deal to boost the roster or they’ll just  let his contract lapse. They only have 3 days to try and make a move if they are going to.

Signed Delly for the Qualifying offer. That’s a steal IMO….

Delly wanted security before the international tournament started. Also…Aussies less motivated by money than Americans. (Never heard of an Aussie playing hardball with mangement over contract negotiations).
