For a guy that is projected as a first rounder, Caris Lavert is playing more like a guy that ought to come back for his senior year.  Totally uninspired play.  Granted, he is playing along with a pretty substandard cast, but he has really disappointed this year.

Caris isn’t Michigan’s problem. He’s getting absolutely no help from the rest of the team. He’s being asked to be both the team’s primary scorer and primary distributer, and teams are keying into that. He’s facing constant double teams. Also, the guy on Purdue that was guarding him today (I forget his name) was an outstanding defender. He was all up in Caris’ grill the entire game. I know that’s not an excuse for a lottery talent, but still. If you look at the stats for all the games this year, Caris’ best games were when Zak Irvin was also playing well. Irvin’s entire game is predicated on his 3-point shooting, so when his shots aren’t falling (and they haven’t for the past 6 games or so) he is completely ineffective. When his shots are falling, the court opens up for Caris to operate. At the next level, assuming Caris is on a team with shooters, he can be a really good player. Keep him in the lottery in your mock drafts, if not top 10. I currently have him ranked 10th on my big board. He’s a 6’7 2-guard with a PG’s vision and arms that look like they reach freaking floor. He rebounds really well for a guard and can be a really good defender when locked in (which he admittedly hasn’t during the team’s slump). He’s also a phenomenal shooter. This is his second season in a row shooting over 40% from 3, even though he is the focal point of every opponent’s defensive scheme. His shot selectioni has been questionable during the team’s slump, especially today, but he can create his own shot at the college level at will and would be more efficient if he didn’t force it as often, which he sometimes has to because his teammates give him no help. Lastly, he turned 20 in September, so he’s young for a junior. The dude has a bright future at the next level, and would be an All-American if he played for a better team.

I think he is a lottery talent but unfortunately his team is going to hurt his stock. Spike Albrecht is their 2nd best player and no offense to Spike, but he is a midmajor PG……

How is Beilein struggling to get talent after the past few years? Recruits should be knocking down doors.

i think he has to declare.  it’s a weak draft without a lot of great perimeter scorers.  plus, we’re talking about a 6-7 guard and not a combo guard.  think scouts like his size/skill combo, even if michigan is horrible.

He really had some great games last season where he really thrived off of playing with a very talented supporting cast. Because of that, he was a bit overhyped coming into this year. I definitely don’t see him as a lottery pick but he is good enough to be a decent NBA player.

His best quality I feel is his ability to facilitate and create shots for teammates. He’s not super quick or a great athlete but he has a deceptive change of pace game and good ball handling ability for a player his size which allows to get to the basket. He’s an intelligent player who will usually make the right pass but this year he doesn’t have the personnel around him to finish plays. He’s a serviceable but not really a pure shooter. The problem is that he’s being asked to basically carry this team and he’s not that type of player. Guys like zac Irvin and derrick Walton have been major disappointments thus far.

Ultimately, I like his NBA potential but his draft stock may have taken a hit. I could see him being one of those guys that falls into the 25-35 range and actually winds up being a steal for some team.
