I’d like to start this post by saying I understand the All Star game is an exhibition game and the league wants the fans to be involved by voting for the starters.  However, when looking at the numbers there is definitely something wrong with the current voting system.  I’m not saying fans got it wrong with the starters although you can make a case for a Draymond Green, Jimmy Butler, Andre Drummond etc. being deserving as starters.

If you want to see the full voting numbers you can go here:

    http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2016/01/2016-nba-all-star-game-starters-announced.html

I’m making this post more about fans voting for players who shouldn’t even be in the conversation as All Stars.  The biggest example of this is Zaza Pachulia with 768,112 votes being short 14,000 votes from edging out Kawhi Leonard as a starter for the West.  Zaza got over 4 times as many votes as his teammate Dirk Nowitzki.  He also got more votes than Draymond Green, Blake Griffin, Anthony Davis, Demarcus Cousins.

Another couple examples are Enes Kanter and Jeremy Lin.  Kanter had 534,499 votes which was more than players like Davis and Cousins.  Lin received 195,920 votes which was more than Isaiah Thomas(153,640) and Reggie Jackson(76,688).  Not saying Thomas and Jackson starters or even locks to make the All Star game but they have been playing at a high level this year.

I’m not sure how the voting could be fixed to prevent this from happening but I’d hate for player to get voted in when they don’t deserve to be there like Pachulia, Kanter, or Lin.  Keep in mind I know that Kobe has not played at an All Star level but I can understand fans wanting to see an all time great there one last time.

The fact we were 14,000 votes away from Zaza Pachulia starting is disgraceful. I legit want to know what "fans" are casting these votes.

The people voting for Zaza are just cheesed-off fans who want to make a mockery of the stupid voting system.

The NBA is an international brand. I think he had a lot of voters from his native country of Georgia as opposed to a bunch of people sitting at home saying, "wow this voting sucks so I’m going to vote for Zaza Pachulia".

I would prefer they eliminated fan voting. i mean the majority of fans want to see the best in the game go at it and i highly doubt anyone would be upset if the league just decided who those twenty four people were. But with that said, as long as the guys going deserve to go, i dont care who finishes just outside of the mix. At the end of the day zaza and lin wont be there so the current system hasnt screwed the game up. The only guy going who doesnt deserve to be there from a performance standpoint is kobe but i doubt too many will complain since its his last hurrah.

I cant off the top of my head think of any all stars who were voted in in the past who had zero business being there. Maybe the year back around 1990 when AC green was voted in ahead of karl malone, that was just silly.

People enjoy taking advantage of the system, see John Scott in the ice hockey all-star game.  Like llperez said I also can’t think of any player stupidly making the all-star game when they didn’t deserve it so it’s not exactly a broken system.

BTW it might be a record for the closest someone has ever gotten to be voted in as a started.  Pau missed out by only 360 votes.

Just off the top of my head some guys who the fans voted to start who didn’t deserve to be all-stars.

Penny hardaway in 98. Only played in a few games that year.

    Bj Armstrong in 94.

Vince Carter in 2003. Only played in a handful of games. Gave jordan his starting spot.

Yao ming over shaq in 2003 and 2004.

    Iverson in 2009.

    Carmelo in 2015.

    Kobe this year.

Overall though I really don’t mind the fans picking the starters. It’s the one game a year that is really all about the fans and entertainment. Give them who they want to see.

I personally would like to see a slightly more competitive game. The past few all-star games have basically been glorified lay up lines and shooting practice. I feel like I could have probably got double digits in the game last year. Back in the day at least it seemed like guys played with a little more pride defensively. I guess thats just what it is now though. No one wants to risk looking bad, or more importantly, getting injured.

Bring the system back to 2 guards 2 forwards and 1 center

That will clear up that problem rather than having 3 forwards in the game.

           Why is that a problem?

As for the fan votes, I’m fine with fans voting but I’m not fine with the votes counting. I say let em continue to vote but just lie to them and put whoever is the most deserving in the starting lineup.  Maybe let the coaches and GMs pick them too.

Actually, I don’t care at all.  The All-Star game and the entire weekend is a joke. I haven’t watched in years and won’t this year.  For the players, the year end All-NBA teams are the accolades that matter.

Lin received 195,920 votes which was more than Isaiah Thomas(153,640) and Reggie Jackson(76,688).

    ——————————————————————————–

To be fair Kyrie Irving got 580,000 votes and almost snagged a starting spot over Lowry, for 15.8 PPG, 3.9 APG on 41.7% shooting in just 14 games this year. I think Irving getting almost 600, 000 votes is worse than Lin getting 200,000.

I think most fans would actually support getting rid of fan voting.

With that said, as a sort of aside, I was listening to Jalen Rose talk about how Kobe is the least efficient starter in All-Star history. I immediately thought, "What about Allen Iverson?" But after looking at the stats, it’s not even close. Iverson had some high 30’s seasons from the field is bad, but he never had 34.5% years. I really didn’t realize Kobe was struggling THAT bad.

Still, while I think it should change, I’m admittedly jaded to it. It seems to happen all the time when guys play only a handful of games and get voted in, so why not let an era-defining player get his farewell tour?

On a sidenote though I’m surprised Dirk got no love. The guy is a legend in the twilight of his career, like Kobe and Wade. He’s actually been productive and efficient for a playoff caliber team. And he’s also European, seems like most of the big men who got more votes than they deserved were European: Zaza, Gortat, Giannis, Valanciunas. But Dirk winds up 15th among Western forwards, I would have figured he was more popular.

Fan voting is a disgrace. The people who defend it are usually ignorant hoop fans who pine for Allen Iverson. I don’t care if that makes me sound like a pretenious pr**k, that’s the feeling I have in my bones.

I think the NBA should adopt a system similar to the NFL where the players, coaches, and fans vote, and each counts as 1/3 of the vote. For the most part you know the players and coaches will pick the most deserving players so at least 2/3 of the vote will be legitimate. Cutting out the fans completely wouldn’t be very PR friendly, so with this method they still get to vote, but their stupidity can be mostly masked by the players and coaches.

I see no reason why Kobe should be voted in, it’s something I’ve been wanting to comment for a while.

IHDGAF is Kobe, with the same measuring stick Tim Duncan and Nowitzi should both make it. They are legends and is a slap in the face to see Kobe voted in with a trillion votes yet they hold nearly none.

"OH Kobe is… YADA YADA YADA!!!!"….. IDC, so is Duncan and Nowitzki. It’s extremely unfair to other legends the Kobe situation.

I agree. The All-Star game is based on year by year basis and not on legend status. So now some deserving guard is going to miss the All-Star game because it’s Kobe’s victory lap season.

Another thing I don’t like about this is that people use All-Star game appearances to rate players. So now Kobe adds another All-Star game to his belt, but that number should have an asterisk as he did not deserve this.

One thing I don’t get – they’ve gone from guards/forwards/centres to backcourt/frontcourt… but it still makes no sense!

Surely it should be broken down as bigs/wings/guards or just bigs/perimeter players? that way we get two starting lineups that actually look like basketball teams.

Maybe a possible fix is only allow a certain number from each team.. There has to be minimum criteria for stats and games played.. possibly win/loss as well.. The bench will always be ok because the coaches pick and replacement players as well.. The fact that Zaza (while having a solid season) is even on the all star ballot is reason enough for the trollers to vote him in

I believe the coaches, executives, and other team personnel should pick a group of NBA players that are on the ballot. Let’s say 20-30 players from each conference. Then the fans get to vote on those players for the starters. This way the fans still get to vote for the starters (the NBA needs fan involvement to boost ratings) but they are steered into the right direction by not being able to vote for players who don’t deserve it.

If everyone has problems with the fans voting certain players in who don’t deserve it.  Then I will say what I tell everybody about our political system.  Fucking vote for yourself.  The NBA allows you to vote for whoever you want, as many times as you want.  If you have a problem with it.  Vote 1000 times a day like I am sure some fans who want to see a particular player do.

No need to change or get rid of fan voting because some fans aren’t happy with the players other fans voted in.  What kind of shit is that?

No need to change or get rid of fan voting because some fans aren’t happy with the players other fans voted in.  What kind of shit is that?

Same problem with both politics and the all star game, uneducated voters.

But to another point you brought, why not limit fans to 1 voters ballot? What’s the point of unlimited votes anyways?
