I was just wondering if the value of Porzingis and Payne could make the Wolves consider moving their first overall pick. They’ve reportedly worked out Kristaps and liked what they saw, which leads me to believe it is feasible especially if they can swap out Ricky Rubio’s contract for a promising rookie (Cameron Payne) and a veteran.

If this is the case and I’m the Knicks, I immediately engage the Heat on a trade that sends Carmelo Anthony and Jose Calderon to Miami for Loul Deng, Mario Chalmers, Josh McRoberts, Shabazz Napier, their 10th and 40th picks as well as a $6 million trade exception. I’d then combine my 4th pick with the Heat’s 10th pick, trade exception and Mario Chalmers in a deal with Minnesota to acquire their 1st pick, Ricky Rubio, as well as the 31st and 37th picks.

The deal effectively gives the Heat, a win now team, their best player and an opportunity to upset the Cavs in the East. It gives Knicks a surer prospect that can fulfill the "franchise player" tag, with the ability to acquire/sign additional players to remain competitive in the East. And the deal helps jump accelerate the Wolves’ rebuild with two, potentially star prospects, instead of one at positions of weakness/instability. Thoughts?

     I honestly don’t think Carmelo’s moving…

Beyond a crystal ball, do you have any kind of reasoning to justify your thought?

Nobody will pick up his contract… plus the Knicks happen to really like him.

Why wouldn’t the Wolves just trade Rubio for a pick high enough to take Payne and also Towns at 1?

Because Rubio isn’t worth a lottery pick due to his frequent and prolonged injuries as well as his long term 8 figure contract. There also isn’t much of a market for a PG that can’t hit a perimeter shot or layup consistently in a league that values spacing the floor and penetration.

It’s not the worst knick trade I’ve heard this week. As a Knick fan I love it. Carmelo’s window is closing quickly. Trade allows Knicks to rebuild with youth on the fly and still she enough assets and cap room long term to add key pieces towards building a championship contender for years to come.

Minnesota may consider it. I know flip is high on on Porzingis and Payne is a solid pg prospect to build around. Depends on how badly they want to rid themselves on Rubio’s contract.

Biggest question mark would be the Heat. Riley seems hell bent to retool in the summer of 2016. This deal would hurt their cap space. They get Carmelo but they could get KD next offseason who is 5 years younger.

I am a Wolves Fan.  I love Towns.  I love Rubio.  I have no interest in Porzingis or Payne.  Terrible Idea.

I really think Knicks have the easiest job in this draft, why?

Just freaking select whoever that drops to your lap (Towns / Oakfor / Russel / Mudiay, the top-4)!

Knicks need a PG who can get to the rim and create easier scoring opportunities for other guys, and Mudiay even compliements Jose Calderon well so I can envision both of them starting in the back court.

Calderon / Mudiay / Melo / Monroe (assuming that he signs w/ Knicks) / Robin Lopez (or some other FA big to protect the paint).  This team should be good enough to win 40 games in East and make to the playoffs.

Phil Jackson would be really stupid if he tries to draft based on "his system".  You always go w/ the best talent, and tailor your system based on your personnel, not the other way around.

Mudiay is a traditional PG and would be marginalized in a system that seeks to take the ball out of any one individual’s hands. The situation is compounded by the fact that Mudiay can’t shoot, which renders him useless when moving without the ball. Gary Payton was still in his prime when he played for the Lakers and look what the system did to him!

I sometimes wonder whether Phil Jackson is fully invested and whether the best course of action for the Knicks wouldnt be to trade Carmelo and start anew. I believe Phil when he says he wants to build through free agency–and with urgency, due to Melo being on the wrong side of 30.  The Knicks slot will be really fun and interesting to watch play out. I think they’ll trade back and dump a bad contract or 2 in the process to free up cap room. They’ll want some future picks too, as their cupboard is bare.
