Perhaps I am having a hard time dealing with reality, but in this scenario the Bulls are left off worse than in 2010, but turn out alright (wishful thinking).

The Bulls have already missed out on Afflalo. We should hear in the next couple of days but I assume/predict Melo will be heading back to NY, or LA. That is a lot of money to turn down, and NY could add pieces after next season when Amare and Bargs $ is up. Minnesota prefers Thompson over any combination of try-hard players or prospects the Bulls can offer. Not sure how the money is going to work but Gasol and OKC just seem to perfect to pass up in this scenario. Either way, Bulls miss out on Gasol too. Parsons, Ariza, Lance, and other bigger names all go elsewhere, or stay put.

    Epic Failure. Panic Mode.

Not so fast. Enter Plan D, or E.

With the Boozer amnesty the Bulls will have some money to spend. IF the Bulls were to miss out on the big FA’s they could add several pieces, spread the money out, and go the route of the Spurs. Depth, defense, and team play pave the way to success. With the East now supposedly up for graps, a few tweaks to the roster could give Thibs "more than enough." Despite being the worst scoring team in the league, the Bulls were still one of the better teams in the league. This was done without Rose, and obviously a heathly** Rose playing at a high level is required for this team to contend. Adding this, or any version of Derrick will help that struggling offense. Adding the 5th leading scorer in NCAA history via the draft shouldn’t hurt either. Last year’s struggles quietly forced the offensive development of Taj Gibson. He is now a player you have to guard in the post and mid-range. Adding a choice few free agents that can also put the ball in the hoop should help them battle against Miami, Indiana, and the rest of the East.

Nikola Mirotic, Ramon Sessions, Channing Frye, and Anthony Morrow would add that needed depth and scoring. Not the star-studded group fans would like after the much hyped summer of 2014 but this is plan D or worse, which I sadly think might happen. So I am tying to make the most out of it after missing on Melo/Love. Not sure if the money would even work out with these players but a few contracts around 5 mil, give or a take a few, is feasible. This scenario also leaves Bulls money for Jimmy Butler, who they will need to re-up soon.

Thibs is known for getting the most out of players and getting them to play D. McDermott, an underrated defender and athlete, could not have gone to a better place. Like his entire life, he is now again being doubted. My admitted affection for McDermott is a main reason why I think Plan D could end up good for them in the end. Thibs developing, and calling plays for him is something to be excited about. Rookie playing time under Thibs has been limited to say the least, but with his shooting ability and the Bulls need in that area and position, and the fact they traded so much (and took bad such a bad contract in Randolph) he should see some quality time. He fits so well with their team philosphy and culture. Thibs could also push and get the most out of the veterans like Sessions, Frye, and Morrow. They would all provide a nice scoring punch off the bench. Adding depth and scoring to an already in place defense would give them a roster that could contend.**

    PG- Rose**     Sessions

    SG- Butler      Snell            Morrow

    SF- McDermott        Dunleavy

    PF- Gibson          Frye            Mirotic

C- Noah           Greg Smith              Greg Stiemsma ( or Anthony Randolph if they don’t trade or fill in back up Center)

Thoughts on my Plan D?  What would you do with the Bulls if they fail to add a big name?

They better damn well land a quality free agent.  And I know they are trying to get Mirotic over this year.  If not, it’s basically a guarantee he comes over next year.

Wouldn’t mind Morrow and Frye, but inexpensively.  Wouldn’t give either of them more than 5mil/yr.

This is ridiculous. Why does Chicago have such big issues attracting elite free agents. Its a prestigous club and good market similar to Boston. They have a MVP ad DPOY talent with Rose and Noah. Great comllimentary players with Butler and Gibson. Cap space once they deal with Booz, and a Top 3-5 Head Coach with a winning system and even though management never gets the ideal offseason they always make smart decisions to improve the cub with drafting, development and small quiet signings. Thats the first team I would want to go to as a Free Agent.

I can’t ever remember the bulls getting a star free agent. They have always drafted their players. It could have to do something with Jordan being such a star that no one wants to fill those shoes. He is the best ever so Don’t give me other star players for other franchises that have gone on to win after hall of fame players.

IMO what really kinda screwed the bulls is the last 2 seasons of losing Derek Rose and yet they were still close to the top in the east. Being in the lottery the last 2 years would of helped them a lot.

The Bulls won 48 games last year without having a healthy Rose, McDermott, and Mirotic.

I think plan D is pretty solid, high 50s in wins.
