theprophetParticipantit seems to me that that would be the only reason to go there, maybe try woman’s league to get a foot in the door for mens? i don’t get it. why skip wnba for something like that?

SpacegrassParticipantI am pretty sure she will be the most well endowed player on her team.

britney griner will play in china! this is something to keep an eye on. can she hang with the men there? thoughts?

B-ball fanParticipantThey must have offered her one sweet contract. I think the media attention for her in the states will probably fade out after this, though. Not that playing in the WNBA would have made her that high profile, though. Women basketball players tend to be more famous during their time in the NCAA.
On a side note, I don’t know why her hanging with the men there would be relevant, as she signed with a women’s team.

theprophetParticipantbut that’s my point, why do that? would it be to get her foot in the door to play with men there? because i would think the wnba would be much more challenging.

SiggyParticipantIt’s a financial move. She’ll get paid more there.

theprophetParticipanti guess money talks, if i were that dominant i would want to play the top competition at home rather than playing weaker competition in some foreign country. that’s just me.

raybeasParticipantplay overseas, because of the timing of the leagues allows them to play all year long and earn extra money. She’s not going to be playing against men.

SiggyParticipantThe Chinese league coincides with the WNBA season.

theprophetParticipantthat makes sense now. thanks.

goldie92689ParticipantDoes not coincide with the wnba
Wnba is a summer league, Most of the female players play 2 leagues.
She will capitalize on the Chinese Market just as Maya Moore and others have.
China may be cultivating the top Women’s League not named WNBA

SiggyParticipantOf course money talks. This is women’s basketball we’re talking about here, not men’s. Women’s basketball is not that lucrative at all which is why many of the top women’s players play yr round in different leagues to get paid.
Did you know that the average rookie salary in the WNBA is ~$36,500?
I don’t blame her for trying to make the most out of her playing years.0 - Posted on: Thu, 05/02/2013 - 10:54am #768139
Ny2daDeathOFmeParticipantHows she going to play in china if she was just drafted in the wnba? I’m confused
0- Posted on: Thu, 05/02/2013 - 10:54am #768141
SiggyParticipantJust because a team drafts you doesn’t mean you’re obligated to immediately play for that LEAGUE. If and when she decides to play in the WNBA, she will play for whoever drafted her.

Ny2daDeathOFmeParticipantI got you.

JBickart14ParticipantThe WCBA season takes place while the WNBA off season is going on

Memphis MadnessParticipantGriner has a bigger %#*% than Chinese dudes. Take it to the bank.
0 - Posted on: Thu, 05/02/2013 - 11:34am #768157
phila9012ParticipantGriner will play in the WCBA and the WNBA. They happen at different times, the WCBA plays during the normal basketball november through march or april while the WNBA goes during the summer. Typically the WNBA players play overseas too and that is where they make most of their money. Sometimes they have shoe contracts that force them to play in the WNBA or just enjoy playing in it so most of the american women play in it. All of the women basketball players play overseas. I dont follow or watch womens basketball, but I do know the business side of it a little bit.

BigChamp12ParticipantI think a lot of you guys are confused. Just because she signed with the team in China DOES NOT mean she isnt playing in the WNBA. Once the season ends the WNBA, she’ll then head to China where their season will last from October to February. She’ll be no different other WNBA players. Maya Moore, Swin Cash, Tamika Catchings all play in China after they’re season ends. Maya Moore scored 60 a few months ago and had multiple games of 50.
The reason they do that is to continue playing and more importantly because of money. In the WNBA the average salary is $72,000. Diana Tarausi and Candace Parker both made approximately one million this past season playing overseas. Although the WNBA is the top league with all of the exposure, overseas is by far the best place financially.Just to clear it up one more time, Britney Griner will be playing in the WNBA this season.

SiggyParticipantYour’e right. I read that line towards the end of the article and they were talking about the NBA schedule, not the WNBA schedule. I guess I misread because the thought of her in the NBA is so ludicrous that I don’t know why anyone would entertain the thought or even write about it.

Toronto16ParticipantAh man!!! I really wanted to see Brittney in the NBA.

BasterdInABasketParticipantAnyone who mentions Britany Griner and Mens Pro Basketball in the same sentence is an idiot or just being sarcastic. Lets be honest she wouldn’t even sniff the court on a men’s D1 team. She could potentially be the most dominant womens player ever but that really means nothing.
0 - Posted on: Thu, 05/02/2013 - 11:45pm #768334
Ahkasi ClayParticipantShe is taller and stronger then most of the men in the pba. Wonder if we can get a team to import her next year. She is better the most imports. Lol @33 year old bruno sundvald being able to dominate.

Toronto16Participant@BasterdInABasket
Publicity stunt that I don’t put pass Mark Cuban.
0- Posted on: Fri, 05/03/2013 - 3:15am #768348
CynthiaParticipantCuban also said he’d like to have the first openly gay NBA player on his team. Mavericks are going to be a serious contender next year with Brittney Griner & Jason Collins! Haha
