OhCanada-ParticipantI have a feeling Bobby Portis may shock and get selected ahead of Myles Turner. Both are very intriguing talents. True bigs that can run the floor play solid D and shoot the ball.
Turner has some advantages on Portis as does Portis on Turner which lead me to believe Portis is the safer pick while Turner is a high risk high reward pick.
Offense- Both show sound shooting mechanics and solid NBA go to moves from all over the court. Solid footwork both ways shows great potential for both players.
Rebounding-Portis has a clear advantage in this department. Turner has all the tools to be successful rebounder although he shows an unwillingness to battle through contact.
Defense-Portis is more versatile defender now due to agillity and ball iq although Myles is the better help and post defender and as far as the NBA goes Turner projects as someone with superior potential. He has a two or three inch longer wingspan (7’4) and is about an inch taller 6’11.
Athletisism-I think both players are athletically underrated. They both run the floor well. Portis has amazing agility and is quick off the floor. Turner runs a little funny bringing up concern.
Work Ethic/Mentality-Portis takes the cake here. Turner has shown to be brutally inconsistent in his first year displaying a Roy Hibbertesque mindset. Its hard to call him out on it yet even harder not to notice. Meanwhile Portis battles on every possession and seems very confident. Portis reminds me of Tournament basketball.
So the main difference between the two is Portis will likely be able to contribute immediately while being a safer pick and still having considerable upside. While Turner who hasnt even tapped into his potential can likely become a paint enforcer while having most skills Portis has but the drive and IQ.
Who do you pick?

MopgrassParticipantI don’t think either will contribute right away. Portis is already 240, but both are total push overs. Portis does work hard all game, but I don’t think either guy has displayed the necessary fierceness to be an NBA PF… yet. Because of that, I don’t think Turner will ever be a center, sadly. But Portis is decent from 20 feet, while Turner will probably be a good to great 3 point shooter. That combined with elite help defender/shot blocking potential make Turner an easy pick to me. Floor spacing in the NBA should help Turner a great deal and he won’t be a big focus for defenders. Portis can get to the rack much better and I think he can be a rotation guy, but as others on here have noted: Texas didn’t use Turner right, and he’s closer to the high lottery pick he was originally projected for than his underwhelming season suggests.

TheLastWordParticipantTurner’s upside is much higher. A stretch 5 that can actually offer some rim protection? That’s unique and could be coveted in todays NBA.

TripleDoubleScoutParticipantPortis will be a nice off the bench role player, but Turner has a chance to be a Rasheed Wallace type impact player.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantIts a tough decision. Turner has more upside. He is longer and shows more potential as a shot blocker. He also has more range on his jump shot and could probably eventually be comfortable shooting from the NBA 3. His post game needs work but he has solid footwork and a great touch. However, his awkwardness scares the shit out of me. He just doesn’t move naturally and if its not something that he grows out of I feel like he could have all type of injury problems. His one season at Texas was underwhelming and, whether or not he was utilized correctly, the tougher the competition level the more he seemed to struggle.
Portis is probably the safer pick to me. He has decent range but I don’t think he can extend it past 18 feet and he’s not really athletic enough to be a high-level shot blocker. He’s not a great back to the basket player but can be effective in the mid-range as a face up guy. I think his ceiling is probably someone like Joe Smith, who was a solid NBA player for a long time but didn’t really do anything at an elite level.
The type of player that Turner could be seems to fit more with what most NBA teams are looking for right now, with the emphasis on rim-protection and floor spacing. I have to admit I’d probably be more comfortable taking Portis. However, if you can get a player with Turner’s potential in the middle of the first round, I don’t think you can pass that up. Therefore, I going to say Turner, but not without hesitation.

SwatLakeCityParticipantI pick Bobby Portis but I have my doubts about him too. I don’t like the way he shoots free throws. He sort of throws it over his head and launches it at the hoop. You need to actually shoot it. Get in your regular shooting stance mode, use the flick of the wrist. Put your hands in the "cookie jar" You know use that shooting form coaches taught you in your younger days. (At least I hope they did)
I think both Portis and Turner are raw and will take awhile to develop. Portis is the safer pick and Myles Turner is high risk/high reward pick. Who will be picked higher. I don’t know. Honestly it depends on where the lottery teams are slated to draft, team need, and who those teams like better.
I like Portis more than Turner because he is the safe pick. I have seen him develop more. I used to be on the Turner side but then I saw how much he was struggling and so were the Longhorns. I looked for another player and I found Portis. Started watching him more and grew to like him more than Turner. So if I were a GM and my team needed a PF, and we were picking in the 7-14 range, I would pick Portis. And then I would talk to my shooting coach and get him to help Portis to shoot free throws the right way, because that launching/throwing technique is not working and its going to cost you when opponent start to use the Hack-A strategy and the team Portis plays for starts to lose several games because of him.

sitlbitoParticipantTurner’s NBA appeal is pretty clear. He is almost all nba teams need. An inside player who can shoot from outside, and rim protection. Problem is,nothing tells us he’ll be great. But just because of these attributes,Ithink he’s gonna be taken ahead of Portis. Portis has low bust potential good hands, good shooting touch. His career will be determined by how he fares on defense, because I think his offensive game will translate to an extent. I have a hard time predicting what Turner will be. Porr man’s Ibaka? less explosive/mobile maybe?

rileymcshea3ParticipantBobby Portis remind me of Paul Millsap, which is a great thing with Millsap being the starting 4 for the second best team(record wise). Also led them in points, rebounds, and steals per game.
