Today Griffin recorded his 4th game in a row with 2+ blks. Is this a coincidence or a sign of real improvement? Thoughts?

Blocks are not the sign of a great defender. Stuff I look for from a great defensive big would be how well he forces a guy off the block, how well he makes a guy shoot off balance/low percentage shots, how well he moves his feet to stop drives, how well he boxes out. Blake is a great player but doesnt do all of the abovevery well right now.

    He’s made Millsap work tonight.

I see improvement. He’s starting to figure out how to use his athleticism as a helpside defender and sliding his feet. And he’s figuring out how to use his lower body strength when holding his ground.

Griffin is going to become a very good defender sooner or later. It’s inevitable to me, especially if he’s focusing on it and learning how to pay attention to detail like he’s been claiming since the summer.

Defense is more than what is shown on the box score (Blks, stls, opponent’s fg%, etc.). Blake has the potential and athleticism to be a good defender in a few years, but he’s not there yet.

     @ Indiana,

If this year wasn’t an Olympic year I would expect Blake to spend a lot of time under coach K which would benefit his game so much. Its a pity that he probably wont make the team, cos there is no one better to teach fundamentals than coach K. I agree he will eventually be a good defensive player cos of his tools, but also cos his general bball IQ is high.

I don’t think Griffin will make the team, but he should learn a lot about playing defense during the tryouts, etc.

Being around that defensive culture can only help him. Defense is priority #1 for Team USA and they get after it.

Just look at Aldridge, Gordon, Love, Rose and Curry after their summer with team USA. All came back a level above what they were pre team USA.
