Personally, I think “The Black Mamba” is an amazing nickname for Kobe Bryant. What I did not know though, is that Kobe apparently jacked the nickname from highly rated football recruit DeAnthony Thomas! Here is an article I found, that does not have dates, but clearly states the fact in an LA paper (Thomas goes to Crenshaw HS in LA).

    http://articles.latimes.com/2010/aug/25/sports/la-sp-0825-hs-running-backs-20100825

So, Snoop Dogg was the one who came up with this nickname for Thomas, who I guess goes by “Black Mamba”. Apparently, he is going to shock the recruiting world and head to my alma mater, UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, over local favorite and once thought to be lock USC. Well, in that case, GO DUCKS!

To make this topic slightly more relevant to basketball (though I posted about football recruiting in the off-topic board), I was wondering if you guys ever thought someone maybe stole a nickname, or that the nickname was not really applicable. Of course Vince Carter was picked on as doing that by And 1 and their “Halfman/Half Amazing”. Also, I felt like “The Natural” was a dumb nickname for Brandon Roy, never felt like fit and felt like it did him injustice in that he worked hard to get to the point he was at. Well, I am all ears, and want to know what people feel about this Mamba thing. I personally do not care that Kobe did it, but I think it is cool my school might be getting the ORIGINAL “Black Mamba”. If we do, my avatar might just change….

Im not surprised a few other athletes took on the Black Mamba nickname…the Film Kill Bill was a huge international success and has become a part of POP culture, as have most Quentin Tarrintino films…I’m just shocked no one took the best nickname from a Tarrintino film…The Jew Bear…I’m guessing Omri Casspi or Jordan Farmar could take it…lol…in all seriousness i would like to give the credit where it’s due in reference to the origin of Kobe’s nickname, the Movie Kill Bill…now let’s roll out some cool nicknames for Nba players using classic movie characters…

Nicknames have always gone to the more famous player or person. Thats always been the case. There was a street baller named Half man/Half amazing but Vince Jacked that. There was a basketball player who had the nickname "the Dream" before Hakeem but Hakeem ended up with that

It is "The Bear Jew", Scarecrow. It was a cool concept in "Inglorious Basterds" and all, though I still have a hard time seeing Eli Roth being that intimidating, even with the added bulk for the role. We could definitely think of some though, and if I had to hand out "The Bear Jew", Amare Stoudemire might come to mind :). I would say leave it to football and give it to my man Geoff Schwartz, 6’8 and 330 pounds of killer Heeb for the Carolina Panthers. I do not recall the type of snake from Kill Bill 2, just remembered I loved the concept of having a snake bite someone and having it not be on a plane (It came out before SOAP, though I still rep that movie too). I do not think Kobe totally jacked it from Thomas, but Thomas still had it first, and it shows you should do research. It is tough to pick a nickname though, so many are taken already by someone else. Know how many Dre/Dray’s there are in rap? Dr. Dre, Andre 3000, Krayzy Drayzy, they can all be called Dre. Every Andre I know calls themselves Dre at some point, lol.

Memphis Tyga, there is only one school I know that calls itself, The U, and that is Miami (FL). I always assumed you were a Memphis fan. You one of those, "I like this team for football, this team for basketball" guys? It is cool if you are, though I put the Ducks over everyone in any sport, though I like some schools football teams and not their basketball teams and vice versa. Right now, my list of teams I do not like in football is big time, as I want the Ducks to get that Natty championship, and I look at our schedule and see some major opponents. LSU in particular, than the thought of having to play Stanford at home with Andrew Luck at the helm, not to mention USC possibly twice if we see them in the Pac-10 title game (Again, if). Still, Thomas was the first player I knew from the 2011 class and was the early #1 prospect, and he looks straight up nasty. We are currently stacked at the RB, but I feel you can never have enough depth, especially considering the total brutality of football could mean you must rely on a back-up or two at any time. Still, the possibility of adding an athlete of Thomas’ caliber is just as if not more exciting than when we landed 5 star RB Lache Seastrunk last year. It is incredibly difficult for true freshman RB’s to carry a full load right from the start, and many who do not maintain durability, so it will be nice that he can learn behind LaMichael James and Kenjon Barner, to me the best returning RB duo in the nation. If you are not familiar with us look us up, we are so fast pace and fun to watch, if you like football you will love our team.

Now, for these nicknames, lets think of some good ones.

    Dirk Nowitzki-"Mr. Blonde"? (Reservoir Dogs)

Kevin Love-"The Wolf" (Pulp Fiction-He makes your rebounding problems go away)

Anthony Davis-"Nosferatu" (I am a jerk, but the appearance is uncanny, plus it is honestly a rad nickname)

Charles Oakley-"Yojimbo" (Translates into "The Bodyguard" in Japanese. Know he is retired, but if you can think of another enforcer to give it to, I think it kind of rocks.)

Steve Nash-"The Comedian" (Seems to be the most fitting.)

Tim Duncan-"Rorschach" (Due to his stoicism)

Chris Paul-"Dr. Manhattan" (Would be especially fitting if he went to New York, but it seems like he has an all encompassing presence when he is on the court)

It is tough to come up with them from strictly characters or movies and have them be good, lol.

Yeah, Snoop apparently recruited him for Pee Wee Football on his sons team. I heard that he actually turned Snoop down and stuck to playing with his homeboys. This guy seems to go against the grain, as his (do not know if the term is correct) "godbrother", plus a number of his other homies are headed to USC. So, yes, I believe he had the nickname like Quincey pointed out, shortly before Kobe. It is crazy, but this kid is apparently that good. My brother lives in LA, and everyone he talks to about him raves about him. Quincey, if you are in LA for the ASG, look for my little bro. He works at Niketown in LA. Sorry, ll, it looks like Kobe was beat to the punch….
