Knicksboy34ParticipantIt allowed Team to pay FA who played for there team the previous season more money than other team
For Example
LeBron to the Knicks- the highest would be a 5 years, 60 million
Lebron to stay in Cleveland- Highest would be 6 years, 75 million

fastdanParticipantThat’s not what the bird rule is…
The bird rule gives the ability to a team to resign it’s own players even if they are over the cap. Created when the Celtics were over the cap and wanted to resign Larry Bird. They can do it as long as the player has been with the team for 3 or more years a believe. Bird rights are also traded with the player.0 - Posted on: Sun, 07/12/2009 - 12:00pm #180362
MuggsyParticipantBird rule is in fact when a free agent has played with their team at least 3 years. It allows the team to re-sign them regardless of cap space. This is why most good players get 3-5 year deals. So they can be re-claimed easier if the team wants. Also I do believe if the player has Bird rights he can be signed for a max of 6 years, instead of the regular max of 5.
