Who do you guys think the biggest surprise was of the NBA Draft, as in surprise dropping or rising. Try to do one that we don’t talk about a lot, meaning anyone other than Winslow, Nance, or Wood not being drafted. Want to hear what you guys got.

You could even talk about team fit and all too.

For me the one pick that I scratched my head was like uhm okay? Was definately the Cs taking Terry Rozier, Wasn’t projected that high nor do they need a PG so i was pretty confused/surprised.

Agreed Rozier was absolutely a surprise for the same reasons you listed.

The number one shock to me was actually Larry Nance Jr. going to the Lakers at 27. He wasn’t even on most mock drafts at all and the ones he was on had him going late second round. I was speechless to see him go in the first round.

     D’Angelo Russell going second.

Okafor, Porzingis, or Hezonja would have been a better choice, as we’ll see in short order.

I thought Jonathan Holmes would get drafted for sure. I was shocked when he wasn’t. Versatile forward who can play the 3 or 4, has good range, and can play solid defense. He’s a senior too that can most likely contribute fairly early.

Lots of talent in this draft.

If you didn’t come out of this draft with an asset it’s YOUR fault.

I was slightly disappointed with the Sixers not maximizing their second round picks.  Love the Okafor pick.  Gotta swing for the fences.  His offense to go with Noel’s defense should be promising.  I really like JP Tokoto as a wing athlete/defender, but they drafted a few extra draft and stash bigs, where it didn’t make sense.  I mean, they have THREE top flight high lottery centers on their team… you really need to draft a 4th string center?  I think they could have come away with some solid rotation guys like a Connaughton to shoot, or an Andrew Harrison as a bigger point guard and Tony Wroten insurance.

I was dissappointed in there not being any blockbuster draft night trades.

1 surprise to me was the hawks, a team that needed a guy that has the potential to be a star in oubre..only to trade him and getting hardway jr…a guy that has the same strengths & weaknesses as korver…

Winslow and Mudiay dropping surprised me.  I can’t believe Winslow was still there at 10.  I didn’t think Mudiay would get past the Kings at 6.

The surprise reaches would have to be Rozier and Nance Jr.

Rosier was a shock going that high. Portis going down to Chicago was a big shock, can’t believe so many teams passed on him. i can already see him having a really strong career and everyone saying omg where did this guy come from why did he go so low?

I know it may seem minor, but I really have to scratch my head about the Sixers trading their first second round pick (pick 35) for two second rounders from the Knicks. I guess on the surface there is value there, but we’re talking about picks in 2020 & 2021. For a team that really needs talent, don’t you take shot there on Andrew Harrison, Dakari Johnson (I know, another big man) or a shooter, whether it be a 2 or 3. The pick @ 37 also didn’t make much sense to me.

Personally I was equally confused. Apparently Sam Hinkie’s moto when drafting is Best Player Available period no exceptions for silly things like team needs. I imagine that if we could see their draft board all the players they drafted would show up as the Best Player Available at that selection.

For me it was easily Winslow falling, let alone to the Heat. Some teams just have all the luck it would seem!

Another surprise for me would be the Hawks trading their pick for an average role playing SG…they could have really gotten a cheaper/younger/better prospect in Portis/Dekker/Anderson. That trade made very little sense to me then, and it still doesn’t make sense now.

Also, I think people need to stop with the Rozier pick. I understand what people are talking about, but they are letting their own intuition and judgement cloud what a team really needs/wants. For starters, Ainge and Stevens both said long before the draft that they were going to prioritize playmakers and shooting in the draft…you typically don’t find those guys in 6’10 bodies, so it was obvious they would take some guards.

I also think casual fan projection is throwing everything off. Celtics don’t need a PG? They started Evan Turner at point last year for Christ’s sake! The team desperately needs a PG, because again, people who think Smart is their starting PG are wrong. Smart played almost exclusively at SG all of last year, and from the way they handled/developed him, it was the way you would develope a SG (play off ball, work on his shot, weakside screens). Rozier was a surprise, but the fact that they drafted a PG/SG does not surprise me in the least once it was clear they couldn’t get Turner/WCS

Nance, Winslow and Wood were surprising, but I don’t think there’s any question that the most surprising pick of the draft was Terry Rozier. It had huge shock value and I don’t think anyone saw it coming. You’d think there would be some chatter before the draft or there would be a thing about how "a few teams really like him" but that didn’t happen at all, it was just a completely random pick. He was a borderline first round guy, and I don’t get why Boston would take him infront of guys like Jerian Grant, Delon Wright or Tyus Jones. Louisville’s offense was not very good with him in charge, and I just don’t see why they jumped on him so early when he probably would’ve been around with their 2nd first round pick.

Since no one has mentioned it yet, mudiay sliding to 7th definitely qualified as a surprise for me. I didn’t think there was any way he would possibly get past 6 and was considered to be one of the top 3 or 4 prospects for most of the year.

Detroit taking Johnson at 8 with Winslow still on the board was a head scratcher for me. This has to be a case where they just zeroed in on the player they wanted ahead of time and decided to take him no matter what. Im not sure exactly what Johnson does better than Winslow and Winslow seems to have a much higher ceiling.

Mudiay dropping to Kings and them still passing on him. Not a fan of that.

Montrez Harrell dropping to 2nd round, yes he’s an undersized PF who has no spacing ability but I thought Tristain Thompsons playoff performance would somehow boost Harrells stock.

Dakari Johnson getting drafted, not just getting drafted but getting drafted to a team that already has a frontcourt of Ibaka, Adams, Mcgary, Collison, and possibly Kanter.

    • Rise – Larry Nance Jr. not to take too much away from him as an individual but namesake may have pushed the envelope this early.
    • Fall – Christian Wood as a guy who is deemed to have so much potential only to go undrafted speaks of the unknown even more. As mentioned prior to his declaration, it would have been must see television with both he and Stephen Zimmerman paired together in the frontcourt.
