hiphopismylifeParticipantI’ve seen this kid play enough to notice the star power he possesses. And im talking about NBA star power. Everyone talks about the potential of Marquis Teague, Anthony Davis, and Mike Gilchrist but potential to me is the ability to improve, which isn’t always predictable when judging someone’s game now. What i’ve seen from this kid is drastic improvement every few months and the kind of approach that could make him a legitimate superstar in the NBA. I know it sounds far fetched but certain guys just have those superstar intangibles that go past physical skills and athleticism. Thoughts?

hiphopismylifeParticipantI dont see how anything is premature once a players name is being posted on a mock draft and were all here talking about him. It’s not like hes 13. Theres a very strong chance hes less than two years away from being drafted. But yeah nobody knows until he suits em up in the L. Just my thoughts

bernardmerrillParticipantI think the Austin Rivers hype of little unwarranted. The kid is a great high school player, and can definitely score, but as far as high school players, I’d take Quincy Miller over him and Andre Drummond as well. Quincy is 6’9 with great handles, good scoring ability, and has alot of Carmelo Anthony in his game. Drummond is a beast inside, and in my opinion is the best high school player regardless of class. Actually, now that I think about, I’d also take Anthoney Davis over Rivers too. Davis is less proven, but im from Chicago, and saw him play up close last year before all the hype came from his AAU breakout. He is 6’10 has a soft touch around the basket, solid footwork, and plays hard. He kinda reminds me of a better Marcus Camby. From what I’ve seen, Rivers is fundamentally sound, with good hesitation moves, and a solid jumper…..but his ceiling seems alot lower than other top prospects. He doesn’t seem “overly athletic” and lacks strength, which most combo guards possess in that 6’3/6’4 range in the NBA. I think the Monta Ellis ceiling is definitely applicable, but then again Monta isn’t exactly a NBA Superstar/Franchise player either. So long story short, i think people should chill out on annointing Rivers as a “nba all star in the making”, and just let him play, see what happens. Just because he crossed John Wall once, and it’s on youtube, isn’t the biggest deal in the world either. There were kids from Sam Houston State shooting 3s in John Walls face last year in the regular season, and they’ll never get a sniff of the NBA, just like these international players who are competing admirably against the US in the World Championships.

gregoden08ParticipantI’d take all those players over him as well. I’d also take Micheal Gilchrist over him as well because of his defense, athleticism and team approach. I like Austin, but I don’t see a superstar at all. He is a bad defender and has a bad attitude. He is very skilled though and he looks to be a very good scorer in college and the NBA. Oh, and I’d also add Shabazz Muhammed to the list as well because of his superior athleticism and strength (different classes, just saying).

stanford hoopsRivers deserves every hype quote he’s gotten. He always proves how good he is and even dominated the u18 tournament with older guys on his team
including kyrie Irving. He was the best player in the tournament that included future lotto picks from his team and from European teams. Yea it’s safe to say his hype is warrented0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/05/2010 - 1:00pm #394813

stanford hoopsBad defender? Find me one scouting report that says he’s a bad defender. He’s a good defender when he’s not at his best and a very good defender at his best. It’s ok thought because you just proved you havnt watched him
much with that statement. Not gonna even commit much on the bad attitude. Don’t get making faces after a bad play confused with a Rasheed Wallace0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/05/2010 - 1:26pm #394829

stanford hoopsDefensively, Rivers’ talent level and feel for the game translate well, even if he doesn’t always feel inclined to show it. He makes good reads rotating in the half-court and seems to have strong anticipation skills coming up with steals and rebounds, although he does tend to gamble.
Rivers’ scoring instincts and athleticism have elevated him to the top of his class amongst the high school recruiting services and there is no question that his talent level warrants that spot. Having already committed to Florida (and then recently reneging), he’s one of the most coveted prospects in his class, with Duke rumored to be the favorites.-draftexpress

gregoden08ParticipantI’ve seen him play several times. Anyhow, im not saying he’s a terrible defender, but for his physical gifts he could be much better. Of course he’s going to be a good defender at this level. He needs to stop gambling when he goes to college/nba because he won’t have the speed to recover like he can in HS.
And he does have a bad attitude.
“The Austin Rivers I don’t really like is starting to show his face. Sour-puss attitude, dominatnig ball, terrible shots, no effort at all.”

hiphopismylifeParticipantWow I haven’t caught much of that. Ive seen more of his competitiveness getting the best of him than a bad attitude or lack of effort, but its been a few months since I last caught him

stanford hoopsYou can say that about Almost every top highschool player. Attitude and defense all could be much better on defense. And if that’s bad attitude then he’s no different then Wade Kobe lebron cp3 wall, mayo at the same stage

gregoden08ParticipantWhen did LBJ give no effort in HS? I’m pretty sure CP3 did as well (he always give 100% effort).
What do you think Austin River’s ceiling is? Who does he remind you of? I can’t think of a really good comparison.

RalwarezParticipantFirst of all – I expect him to move to the point. 🙂 Then I ´d make comparisons. Then it ´ll get more serious, as he may remind you taller, more athlethic and more versatile version of Steph Curry.
But at this point he is just a great high-school scorer with high ceiling. There are plenty of extremely skilled 2guards in NBA – take Marcus Thornton or Monta Ellis – who never gonna get to the hall of fame-.0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/05/2010 - 1:50pm #394855

NJHooper95ParticipantIf Rivers is able to convert to a full-time point then i think his potential becomes elevated. Yet if he remains a at the two I think he still will be a good player but he will not be able to match the potential of Anthony Davis, Quincy Miller, Michael Gilchrist, or Andre Drummond. Rivers does have extreme quickness on the offensive end from what i have seen and heard from people who have coached against him. His jumper is very good, though his shot selection is questionable at times. His defense also does needs some work. Yet, i do feel he will be a good player and if he can become a point then he will flourished.

stanford hoopsEffort? I’m talking about attitude. As far as defense James clearly didn’t always give top effort all the time just almost every hs star
as far as comparisions it’s hard with rivers because there aren’t many comparable which is a good thing. He’s a elite shooter(Ray Allen, curry) elite handles(iverson) elite scorer(Monte Ellis) very good athlete(Ellis) very good defender when he has to be. Good court vision. He has a very high ceiling because he has all the tools to be a elite pg
of course fans will always pick the tall guy with handles and or a jumper who’s versitile to have the most potential (Anthony Randolph, dermarr Johnson,Shaun Livingston,Perry jones). Because it’s easy to see if someone is tall and have guard skills then they have more potential but it’s not always true. It’s really something no one can know for sure

game not highlights. His crossover was nice but not like it was at gtown or NBA. He used to turn it over at a good rate before gtown. He’s not as quick as iverson but his cross over is just as effective as iversons was in hs with less turnovers0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/05/2010 - 3:41pm #394982
