Actually posted about Cody a while back when I was talking about some skilled middle school ballers….and saw a post about him the other day also…I’m sure there will be many more in the future as well.

    Anyways…Cody Riley’s 6’7” 225 from Cali…and def the real deal…Arizona just offered…and he’ll more than likely be a BIG-TIME game changer.  Wrote about him a year ago:

Arizona also offered Top 20 player in Class of 2016 Dereck Thornton Jr.  I had him featured on Class of 2016’s Freshman Watch List for point guards that I posted a couple weeks ago.

Also…Baylor & Kansas offered Class of 2015’s Allonzo Trier a scholarship….those are some serious offers….watched Trier a lot…he’s nice…but def needs to continue to work on his game. Trier and Marcus Lovett, Jr. (another Big-Time recruit from Class of 2015) may have been the only high school freshmen to ever eclipse the 1000 point mark.

It’s not like he can sign so it basically doesn’t matter (can’t sign till you’re a Jr). On top of that who knows how good he will end up being ala Demetrius Walker

While it obviously is incredibly premature to say he will sign with the Wildcats, it is a pretty solid offer. Plus, while I have no idea if Cody Riley will end up being the #1 prospect by 2017 (his senior year in HS), odds are he at the very least will not be Demetrius Walker in one sense, his size. Kid is already 6’7, Demetrius was 6’2 and projected to grow to center size.

So, while the warning is always appreciated, Cody certainly appears to be a name to look for. He may not be Andrew Wiggins (who I am guessing you might say the same thing about), but the kid has done well so far. Cody may be an early developer (well, he obviously is an early developer), just know that he already has at the least legit SF size. Also, even with Demetrius Walker, he at the least was a scholarship worthy player at a D1 school.

Yes, guys do not always maintain their ranking, though many players do indeed remain highly ranked throughout a majority of HS. Cody could be one of them. Glad you dropped knowledge on him as an actual player, though, rather than giving the same general cautionary tale.

Have their been any players who have held down the number 1 spot for their class from 7th grade all the way to Senior year?

Wasn’t Austin Rivers considered the best 7th or 8th grader back in the day?  I think he held his ranking till his senior year of hs…

Walker was just one example. There are many many more.  I went down the list of players who were top players as 6th,7th,8th graders and most weren’t high major recruits by the time they became a Sr (check out hoopscoop online rankings of the past).  Hopefully he makes it but I never agreed with fans or scouts start talking about a player at such a young age. Many who were talked about at that age in the past that didn’t make it always say part of the issue was all the pressure that people put on them at a young age and when they couldn’t live up to it they were thought of as a failure which mentally messed with them

that list was fun to look through. It’s bizarre how even 6th graders are ranked nationally since many of those kids have yet to even hit puberty.
