Yesterday *rope made a thread asking who we thought would exceed expectations this year. Anthony Davis someone who was hyped up tremendously this offseason seems to have done that in his opening game.

The other day I was on realgm and I saw a quick stat showing Anthony Davis either lef the league or was amongst league leaders in the preseason for PER. It made me think if he can set the record for PER and after tonight I rhink its possible maybe not this yeae but within his career as he develops its almost inevitable.

    26-points, 17-rebounds, 2-assists, 3-steals, 9-blocks in a leisurely 101-84 victory against the Magic. Asik also had 17 rebounds and 5 blocks.

Im all on this ban wagon and think that Lebron and Durant just met a serious MVP candidate they will be running against for years to come.

We all know he is good, but can he stay healthy?

Agreed. He has a real chance to be Top 3.  Between his Team USA role – which gave him a lot of confidence – and having a big rebounding center next to him, he is primed for a huge season.  If not this year, he most likely has one in his future.

The Pelicans still can’t really run the offense through him just yet, but he’s so long, athletic and plays with a higher motor than everybody else.

I lost count of just how many easy baskets he got by outhustling people. All types of tip ins, put backs, tip dunks and points out in transition.

He’s going to put up insane numbers this season. Serious stat sheet stuffer at both ends.

I agree that AD is a serious MVP contender. Obviously the Pelicans need to win/make the playoffs to increase his chances.

But I do think he is a near LOCK for DPOY.

Crazy thing is he did’t even shoot the ball well tonight. But his hustle and espacially his speed in the open court is insane. Until today I thought DeAndre Jordan was the quickest near 7 footer in the game but Davis really is quick as a cat and his 1st and 2nd jump after rebounds unmatched to me.

Skyreally is the limit and even KG wasn’t this quick when he had young legs. His shot blocking ability is best in the league as well. Ibaka had some crazy blocking numbers a few years ago but I think Davis will average 3+ for years to come not to mention he will get a ton of steals as well.

Even KG wasn’t this quick? I disagree.

Remember it was a league that had so many great big men and he still managed to pull 10rpg with his lean body. KG would even spend some time at the 3 back then. I really like AD, and he may put similar numbers defensivly, but he’s nowhere near offensively (yet).

More people saw the Celtics version of KG tna the T Wolves version of KG.  He was great with the Celts, but he was a whole different level in Minneapolis.  You are rght, he was an impossible match up in those days.  One of the toughest SOB’s in his generation, as well.

Davis is great, but in this game there were many rebounds to get with most of the guards playing in the game, and some bigger players, missing a lot of shots.  Ben Gordon, enough said there.

Davis can win MVP, but needs to get his team to 50 wins or more, as well as have huge stats.

His domination last night was crazy , he was not even playing that hard. It seemed like a 2k game more than anything. Pelicans need to be more balanced, to many scorers and iso ball handlers.

Its only one game so far.  I’m sure that Lebron isn’t worried yet.   As I said ONE GAME!

I instantly regret not taking Anthony Davis with the 3rd pick in the fantasy draft.  Heck, I won the league with him last year as my pick at 10.  Even last year I had him rated at 3 or 4.

The Pelicans just played volleyball with him and Asik.  Even Ryan Anderson joined the board party.

Wow…. I look at his numbers and production and know how athletic he is and how hard he plays, but I still don’t know about his post game. The tip ins, the effort, out running people and all of that is great, but how far can you those talents take you? I have been following him since high school and he has it all on defense, but I haven’t seen a lot of games of him in the league. I’m wondering what you all think about his post game NOW, and how good you think it will BE?

Everything you said is why I think Anthony Davis is somewhat overrated right now and why his numbers don’t tell the whole story.

He can face up and either shoot/drive, but he doesn’t really have a post game right now. He’s not that kind of player who draws double teams yet and gets his teammates easy shots. He’s still tip ins, lobs, putbacks, transition, etc. That’s great in the sense you don’t always have to draw plays for him and he can impact the game in other ways, but he’s not really a go-to type of player *yet*.

Defensively, he’s definitely a stat sheet stuffer. He’s an amazing shot blocker from the weakside and on the ball. His timing is great (reminds me of Marcus Camby). However, he still gets bullied by stronger post players.

I think his upside is unlimited and he’ll eventually be the 3rd best player in the league, but I don’t think he’s the best at his position right now.

Yeah, we definitely agree. It’s still hard for me to makeout what he does on offense. He’s very similar to Kevin Garnett, but KG already had a post game and even a fadeway at that age. The thing that I learned over the years from really observing basketball is that you aren’t guaranteed a post game. Even the athletes. You’d think that because they are 6’9 or whatever and are agile, quick and jump out of the gym that it’ll be easy for them to develop some post moves; at east an effective drop step. But it’s not tru. It’s a whole other skill, which is why I don’t know what to make of him. He’s a star regardless.

Don’t get me wrong… I really like AD. But if you analyze objectively -beyond his stat-stuffing defense- he’s not a good one-on-one post defender and he’s below average defending the pick and roll.. eventhough he’s considered pretty nimble for his size. I think he will be elite, but right now most people is captivated by his potential and the boxscore.
