drk3351ParticipantBennett scored 0 in 10 minutes of play tonight. He went 0-3 shooting in Cleveland’s win over Minnesota. His season stats so far:
4 Games played
51 minutes
0-12 shooting
2 points
12 rebounds
0-8 from 3 PT (why again is he taking 2/3 3’s?)Is it safe to say Cavs fans should be at least a bit concerned? He was the #1 overall pick who will be labeled a bust by some awfully soon if he doesn’t pick things up. Your thoughts on him?

Wavy BagelsParticipantAlthough I feel that the Cavs screwed up this draft pick, I’m not waving the whit flag on Bennett just yet, but he is showing bad signs. He’s overweight, still has an undefined position, and missed a bulk of playing time in Summer League due to an injury. He just needs to shed that weight and find his identity as a player.

MikezParticipantHe’s going too fast he needs to slow his role, he gets the ball and acts like a cat who just fell into the tub, also 4 of his shots have been at the end of the shotclock.

RUDEBOY_ParticipantHe’s only averaging 13 minutes a game..When was the last time the top pick averaged fewer minutes? Coach Brown said he’s bringing him along slowly..Becuz he’s out of shape and has a problem with asthma, which affects his stamina..But worst of all, his shot selection has been awful…….Twice he has tossed up a 3 pointer within seconds of entering the game….And missed a couple of easy baskets inside…

hoopscopParticipantIt is a horror show, the last 10 years with Ferry and now with Grant as executives, drafting Waiters and Bennett and reaching out for Brown as coach. As for Bennett, coming into the season so out of shape and chucking away three pointers with no purpose at all you have to question his heart, desire and iq.

torontoraptors10ParticipantI will have to state this again because this is important. Anthony Bennett DID NOT prove to be worthy of the 1st overall pick. It was head scratching to me why the Cavaliers would have selected him.
I have stated before that I would rather take Andrew Nicholson over Anthony Bennett.

I got negged for it and that’s fine, but numbers don’t lie and Anthony Bennett is showing thus far how his size and positioning will affect him dearly.

Has any 1st overall pick struggled like this besides Anthony Bennett? Not even Kwame Brown struggled this much in his first season! I do wish he will become a better player but I don’t see him becoming a number one threat. In the link above I’ve posted my questions about his game. Anthony Bennett’s position is going to be very tough in the NBA. Is he big enough to play the PF? Is he quick enough to play the SF position? He has good size, but does he know how to use it effectively?

sheltwon3ParticipantIt could be that Cavs wanted to be bad enough to get a top pick in this upcoming draft. They have a fall guy if that happens. Matter of fact they have two. Bennett and Bynum

King CaluchaParticipantI never liked him for the 1st pick. However, he’s not a bad player. Unlike Derrick WIlliams, this guy has the strength to play inside. When he stops avoiding contact, he’ll do just fine.

JordanC20Participantnot worried about Bennett at all like some have said he’s overweight..he is playing PF right now due to it. Once he gets in shape he’ll be a SF and a lot more effective. At worst he will be a energy guy off the bench that can grab double digit rebounds in limited time.

HazelParticipantCleveland could have had Harrison Barnes and they reach for Waiters who just seems like an awful fit. Why do you draft an undersized guy who needs the ball in his hands when you have arguably one of the best guys with the ball in his hands in the league?
Then you do the same thing again, get a SF/PF who needs the ball in his hands. Both Waiters and Bennett give you very little out side of their supposed ability to score. Bennett may be able to rebound a bit, but so that is such a stretch for the first pick!
What are the chances that in two years we all say, Philly got the best two players in the draft?

A Lil EnglishParticipantWay too soon to even be worried in my opinion.
These kids are drafted on potential not what they do after 1 year or 4 games – He’s not long out of high school remember.
Im convinced he will be fine when he finds his feet and consistency.

canada2482ParticipantHazel when they didnt select Barnes over waiters I was suprised and really shocked. But we cant deal with what ifs bc really if they had barnes maybe they wouldn’t have the #1 pick in this draft who knows.
I think the thing with Bennett is he is trying to play and fit in, he is not in shape. I am suprised if they are ok starting E.Clark at SF who is not a SF that they wouldn’t start Bennett makes no sense to draft a guy #1 if you aren’t going to play him. If you watch them play the cavs run no plays at all for him, he gets looked off a lot.Pick n pop, post n face etc, nothing. We are all saying Bennett is a flop but the #1 pick in the ’13 WHO ELSE COULD THE CAVS PICK. They tried to trade down but their were no takers. I think he will be fine, if he plays like this in december then I think we can start discussing him as not living up to the #1 pick status. IMO0 - Posted on: Tue, 11/05/2013 - 5:09am #847546

kngojcParticipantEverything you said in that last paragraph. Who else would they have gone with? Oladipo? They already have Waiters, where would he play, how many minutes would he get? He would be drafted first overall so he could sit on the bench or start and share minutes with Dion. Zeller? Forget that they already drafted his brother and how much of a difference-maker he is on the court? They aren’t the same player but their ceilings are lower than that of the last mentioned player in Noel. Which, why would you risk a number one pick, even in a bad draft, for a guy with ACL surgery who won’t even be back till next year?
Sure Bennet isn’t the ideal fit for this team, but in reality, why do they need to draft someone who’s going to be a star? They had the number one pick, yes, but in next years draft, any guy you mention before and any other players from this draft wouldn’t be even considered until at least after the fifth pick.
They have Kyrie and they have a bunch of other really good pieces going forward. Its better to just wait it out this year since they’re close to the playoffs (but not quite there yet) and get another good player next year and THEN make the push for the post season.0 - Posted on: Tue, 11/05/2013 - 11:04am #847740

goldie92689ParticipantBennett is a stud. His lack of productivity is more about Mike Brown than Bennett. The kid has no role. He is their 5th big man. They don’t run anything for him. Irving is struggling, waiters is struggling. Brown offense is not putting his best weapons in position to be successful. They need to put him at the three for 20 minutes per night and let him take his lumps. Draymond Green is nice example of what they should be aiming for unless they have big trade in the works.

With Oladipo/McLemore you are basically saying your 1st pick #4 in 2012 draft D.Waiters was basically a mistake drafting either one of those guy
With Zeller you are saying #4 in 2011 Drat T.Thompson was basically a waste as well. I can see Noel, but IMO pairing him with Thompson you are basically not getting real inside scoring outside of dump downs and scrap plays form your PF/C combo for the next 3/4 yrs.
The Cavs might have been the worst team the get the #1 pick last year. IMO0 - Posted on: Tue, 11/05/2013 - 7:43am #847575

Hacker90Participantthat the GMs don’t want to admit they made the wrong choice, but I don’t see what’s wrong with making your guard rotation better. Having a three guard rotation of Irving, Waiters and Oladipo/Mclemore sounds a whole lot better then what they have now. Having one of them come off the bench wouldn’t be a big deal, since they’re doing that with Bennett anyways. You could also have Zeller coming off the bench as their 6th man, who would be a lot more productive then Bennett seems to be so far

that’s why most GM’s suck, they don’t admit their mistakes. They draft a guy high and he sucks, then they want draft that position for the next 3 years to try to safe face and hope he pans out.
Waiters is nothing more than a 6th man who can put up points off the bench, he doesn’t fit with Kyrie well either. Oladipo/McLemore was the correct pick. Just because they picked a SG 2 years ago doesn’t mean they shouldn’t take one last year.

wrectorParticipantGive the kid a break. We know he can score/play, he did so in the preseason. He wasn’t drafted so that he could come in and blast 20 10 every night. He’s out of shape because of his shoulder surgery. He’s played 4 regular season games and averaged roughly 10 minutes. Most #1 picks are getting starters minutes. This wasn’t a normal draft where we had a select few players who are worthy of a number 1 selection, so expectations should reflect that. He’s only 20 years old, and played a single year of college; Oladipo is 22 and has 3 years of college under his belt: bad comparison. Bennett was taken for potential.
Everyone just needs to take a deep breath and relax, he’ll be fine.

SiggyParticipant“We know he can play?” What about the people who think he’ll be a bust?
And he was not good in preseason either. He had 1 good stretch in 1 quarter vs the Magic. The rest of the time he was completely unimpressive. Why is he out of shape due to an upper body surgery? He still could have done work to stay in relatively good condition. Instead he looks to be in awful shape.
I also don’t think his potential warranted the first pick either. As a prospect I thought his ceiling was closer to an Al Harrington. IMO, he’s gonna have to completely change his mindset if he wants to be anything more.

wrectorParticipantI never said he was good in pre-season, I said that he was able to score. However, he played well against Detroit, and recorded a double-double against the Pacers (albeit inefficiently on 3-11 shooting, with 6 TO & 6 PF) during the pre-season as well.
Outside of a stationary bike, there’s not much you can do with a bum shoulder off the top of my head. He was already kinda chubby in college anyway.
It doesn’t matter what you think his potential is to be honest, because you don’t evaluate talent for the Cavs. They saw potential, that’s why they took him. That’s all I said.
I think everyone has jumped the gun on a kid who is just a victim of circumstance atm, unless he really is just this bad – but there’s no way of knowing that at this point.
