valentineSecond time this year he gets a 10 pts +, 10 rebs+ and 10 blocks+.. It’s crazy really.. When was the last time anyone did that and avg 4 bpg?
Could he win Defensive player of the year? In my mind he could be leading the race right now

Bankroll PJParticipantI’m glad someone else realizes that he’s not a great defender just because of his block totals. Don’t get me wrong, this guy is an incredible shot blocker, but his shot blocking prowess doensn’t tell the whole story. He contests every shot at the rim but he fails to record the block more often than he actually gets the block when coming over for help side defense. Playing help side defense is great, but Whiteside many times helps when he doesn’t have to in attempt to record another block. And when he misses the block, the man he’s supposed to be defending usually gets a the offensive rebound or at least a tip out. He’s a great defensive presence at the rim, but I think he needs to be a bit more selective with his block attempts.

markfitz14Participant^So True. It’s like going for an interception over a blocked pass. If you go for the interception and miss well it is usually a huge catch. Sometimes you just have to hold ground and pretend you are going to block. It’s a give and take realationship. Does he have the IQ to do it more? We will see.
He could be a great defender with a little more polish though.

Mr. HookShotParticipantTo what extent will front offices look past his shot blocking totals and look at his actual value on defense? He remains an offensive liability, and I also don’t see him developing to become a more complete player anytime soon.

TheGuyParticipantOffensive liabilty? lol. He’s a pretty solid big man. A liabilty on offense is DeAndre Jordan.

HitsterParticipantSome of the greatest frontcourt defensive players ever are at the very top of the blocks career totals and there have been blocking specialists in the NBA over the years. Whiteside IMO fits more into the 2nd category, he’s a good defensive player but not a truly elite one.
He’ll get good contract offers this summer and will get a very good payday somewhere which he deserves but I don’t see him quite being DPOY yet.
