Moments ago, I came across the flash footage of last season’s performance against the Nets. A bit of me wants to see this guy tap into an inner Sheed mode, but his play reflects that he’s cool with coasting the wave of DeMar DeRozan and Terrence Ross. What will it take for Johnson to step the play up to that of his former veteran champion teammate, who once was there to guide his baby steps while entering the league as an 18-year-old HS graduate?

    20 & 10 performance.

First off, Amir Johnson will never be Rasheed Wallace in any way. Amir has been a disappointment with the pistons but managed to carve out a career in Toronto. Sheed plays with emotion, Amir coasting through games is nothing new.

As for his game nothing evolved. He still struggles posting up. Still slow release on jumper and still foul prone. He’s just a poor man’s Jerome Junkyard Dog Williams.

Amir considering he was a very low second round pick has carved out a nice NBA career. I never thought of him as a Sheed type player, Sheed was noted for being an excellent 3 point shooter for a big man, Amir hits a few 3 pointers but nothing like Sheed did. I agree if Amir could play with Sheed’s passion he’d be a better player.

Amir is an excellent player, but very different from Sheed. Rasheed was an explosive athlete, with the outside shooting touch, post game, and defensive prowess.

Amir might look like he’s "coasting" but he just doesn’t have that kind of explosive athleticism. He’s a very smart defensive player who understands positioning and is very good at timing his block / steal / charge attempts.

On offense, he is not an iso type of scorer. However, he is one of the best finishers off the pick and roll, and has one of the softest touches in the league around the basket. He shoots well from the outside, but his shot is too slow, so he only gets wide open shots. His shot selection is superb.

The truth is that Amir will never be a 20-10 player, but he doesn’t have to be to make an impact. He’s more of a Shane Battier type of player who has a greater impact than what shows up in the box score.

It would really help if Amir played for a better offensive coach. The Raptors still run too many iso plays, but Amir is a very efficient scorer off the pick and roll, and I think DeRozan would be better if most of those ISOs were P&Rs instead.
