Lets name 2 players from different eras that played for the same team that would have been great together (Championship) and list reasons why.  Also, list 2 players who would not have been great for each other.  As a bonus, through in some players that wouldve been great compliments.

    Los Angeles Lakers

Great: Magic and Shaq, not going to go into too much detail here, just use your imagination.

Not as Great: Magic and Kobe.  Too guys who are ball dominant.  Both need the ball in their hands, and since Magic was the much better ballhandler, it would be in his and Kobe would have to settle for working himself into Magic’s offense.  Not a disaster, but I think this combo limits Kobe a lot more than the way we watched him play.

Compliments- Trevor Ariza and Shannon Brown, not exactly new age Worthy and Scott, but man, what these guys would do to a fast break lead by the Magic man!

Not as great: Shaq and Dwight. Same position, similar style in play and both big personiltys.

they would have intimidated every one they played against. just give me a few role players so that both players could get 20 – 25 shots per game.

Great-Amare and Ewing: Both can/could score in a variety of ways….One was a beast on defense, one not so much lol

Not so great: Melo and Starks: Only one ball and both worked in the same areas.

Role players: John Starks and Landry Fields would work really well together. Starks scoring in a variety of ways and Landry doing everything else.

hey guys….remember, this is for players of different eras, so they could not have played at the same time.  and dont forget to mention if the mix would be good or bad.

B-King and Dwill played for 2 of the same teams (Utah and NJ) King wasnt much of a factor in UTAH but he was no joke as a rookie in NJ.

Great: KG and Bird, just 2 great unselfish players who put team and winning first.

Not so Great: Antoine Walker and Bird….just wouldnt work.  Larry wouldnt have it.  Toine jackin up all those 3’s and such and not tryin to get any boards.

Bonus: DJ and Rondo.  Defense, Defense, Defense.

    Rockets:

Great: T-Mac and the Glide, 2 of the games best all around players/scorers.

Not so Great:  Chuck Hayes and Barkley.  A 6’6" center and a 6’6" PF.  Both are no slouch but playing in the 21st century…not good.

    San Antonio Spurs

Great: Tim Duncan and the Iceman George Gervin.  Unstoppable.  Especially with Tony Parker at PG.

Not So Good: The Rifleman Chuck Person and Richard Jefferson, something tells me they would clash.

Bonus: Dennis Rodman and Dejuan Blair….boards around the clock.

Great:  Ray Allen and Kareem.  True inside outside combo that would be unstopable (not as good as Kareem and Oscar, but not much is).

Not So Good:  Oscar Robinson and Marques Johnson.  Two of the best examples of point-fowards ever I doubt would work well togeather.

Compliments: Andrew Bogut, Sam Cassell and Sidney Moncrief.  Cassell as a ture point, and Bogut and Moncreif are both great defensive players to add to the team.

Fully disagree about Magic and Kobe, surve. While it seems Kobe needs the ball in his hands to be most effective, it’s actually untrue. Kobe has longed to go offball for years. Actually at the begining of the 3 peat. He even talked about how he’s always had to play to his weaknesses for the benifit of the team. LAL needed him to be a playmaker playing to his weaknesses to hide Shaq’s. The guy was just so effective at doing so that he was never taken off ball because every attempt has been a failure because of each player they’ve tried taking him off in favor of. COUGH Odom COUGH. It’s actually a prime reason that Kobe wanted to go to Phoenix had LAL not met his demands of getting a good team around him. Ultimately, we may never get to see Kobe going off ball, but the moment we do you’ll understand why he’s more effecient of a player WITHOUT the ball in his hands.

Suck we never really got to see prime 27 year old Kobe play alongside a real playmaker.

^ good analysis.  I actually want to see Kobe play more minutes at PG at a late stage in his career as his athleticism wanes.  he is a good ballhandler and playmaker.  another thing, I can see your point because throughout the years, particular after the Shaq departure, Kobe has been labeled as a gunner and I always felt Kobe wanted to be more of a facilitator and less of a scorer than he is…he basically had to score so much out of necessity….and I think its put a lot of miles on him.  Maybe I should rephrase that, when I mean scorer, I mean that he creates his own offense.  While I think Kobe would be a killer off the ball, I cant help but wonder if he was an off-ball player would it have dimenished his greatness as we know him?

I personally don’t think Kobe will ever be able to play PG personally. those hadn injuries have robbed him of his ball handling skills he once had. They are stil pretty good, but he is far more turnover prone. The only way he will be able to pg at this stage in his career is if they put him in the post similar to the way Penny was played, or magic when in half court. I’ve aways thought it would be nice if in his later years he became more of a true pg, but at this point, it just doesn’t seem likely to me. Those hands have really hammpered his handle as it’s no longer on a string IMO. The best we can hope for IMO from Kobe is to take him away from the ball and have someone else creating for him. Wouldn’t allow the defense to set up for him as quick. If you ask me, part of the reason he hasn’t been so effective killing other teams this past year is because he’s having to create for EVERYONE and the defense knows this and can plan accordingly.
