thought it would be interesting to pick some people who we think may win it this year….Im gonna throw out two names that I think could come out of no where to win it….

    Kendrick Perkins
    Russell Westbrook

Perkins IMO is the best defensive center in the NBA….when you watch him play you see how he plays with such a mean streak and is as tough as anyone in the NBA…he also guards the pick and roll way better than Howard

Westbrook- Its much tougher for a guard to win this award, but coming into is second year i think he will be a lock down defender like he was his sophmore year at UCLA….

any other picks, i know this award is a tough one to predict

Im going with LeBron or Wade, No way they are on the same level on D as a Battier or Artest, but they make emphatic plays once in a while that can change the game, they both get their fair share of Blocks and Steals, along with D-Rebs also, so they can fill up the stat sheet on all levels, they will ultimately get the votes because of their names and stature

yeah an award like this will definitely take into account name and stature because in all honesty the writers who vote don’t watch every player day to day and probably have as much if not less knowledge as us bloggers in terms of day to day action

In all honesty, the LeBron’s, Josh Smith’s and Wade’s, even Dwight Howard, would be in this conversation simply because of their physical attributes alone, they are no way near as good a defenders as Battier or Duncan etc., their play on D as of now is probably 75% of just pure athletic superior, they haven’t come close to being great Defenders considering just their natural abilities alone.

I like Wade to win it, he averaged 2.19 steals last year while averaging 1.34 blocks. That is more than impressive. I don’t think he’ll win DPOY, but his teammate Mario Chalmers will challenge him and Chris Paul for the NBA leader in steals this year.

fck stats I want to see Battier win it finally!

I could see Rondo being a canidate as well as Dwight having a chance at repeating.

Yeah, sometimes I really hate this award…it always goes to a superstar, when guys like Battier shutdown those same superstars every day…

Not saying these superstars are bad defenders, but there definitely are better defenders out there that are probably more deserving of the award

I hate that as well…like Kobe being 1st team All-Defense. Ha, he wasnt even the SECOND best defender ON HIS OWN TEAM (Odom and Ariza)!…I think Wade will get it this year:

    1. Because he’s a mega star
    2. He make spectacular defensive plays
    3. Of all the mega-stars in the NBA, he defends the best man-to-man (IMO)

even if Perkins is the better defender the voters will take Howards numbers any day. and yes Perkins is the better pick & Roll defender but Howard dominates the lane and dominates the boards much like crazy. he also forces defenders to take tough shots and shoot from long range hes the highest impact defender in the league im picking him again.

Is a better defender than Howard. I don’t think he is the popular vote so I doubt he gets it. Perk is the best defensive Center in the NBA. Kobe is a good defender I am sorry, but he is not lock down in my eyes though. I also see Rondo having a shot at it, but Battier really should get one before it’s all said and done.
