Everyone loves a 2nd round steal…… and IMO the paragraph below is the ‘who’s who’ list of premier 2nd round picks that have either forever cemented their history with the league greats or are on their way to doing so. A fair amount with their best basketball still in front of them.

Manu Ginobili, Dennis Rodman, Draymond Green, Mark Gasol, Gilbert Arenas, Mark Price, Isaiah Thomas, Paul Millsap, Carlos Boozer, Michael Redd, Rashard Lewis, Nikola Jokic, Stephen Jackson, Deandre Jordan, Monta Ellis, & others unnamed……..

This list proves that extreme diligence is needed when selecting at all different portions of the draft. International scouting is still crucial, and having a pick in the 40’s could yield an awesome return.

Just for fun, based upon our individual preferences I thought it would be fun to construct a starting 5 on the game’s all-time best 2nd round picks, in their primes! If there are 2nd round picks you’d like to add that I didn’t include, even better!

    • Mark Price (point guard)
    • Gilbert Arenas (shooting guard)
    • Manu Ginobili (small forward)
    • Paul Milsap (power forward)
    • Draymond Green (center)

Overall this team is pretty small, and could get roasted defensively at times in the backcourt….. but I think this team would be really fun to watch. In their primes, this team is potent on the perimiter and a very nice switchable / defensive frontcourt to anchor the PF & Center spots. This team could could play inside / out & run different variations of a motion offense or iso-heavy style in crunch-time.

Sorry, it’s slow season……. Gotta keep the threads goin!!

Solid Team. Shooting/Play making at multiple positions. Decent size on the wings. Rim Runner/Protector in DJ. And all Lefty’s for a added twist.

If we’re doing it literally, keep in mind the draft didn’t always have as many first round picks as it does now. Therefore, in theory, you could have a super stacked team like:

    PG – Tiny Archibald

    SG – Hal Greer

    SF – Alex English

    PF – Dennis Rodman

    C – Willis Reed

However, assuming the point is to make a lineup with players drafted as close to the current format as possible, I’ll go with:

    PG: Gilbert Arenas

    SG: Manu Ginobili

    SF: Draymond Green

    PF: Paul Millsap

    C: Marc Gasol

PG: Nick Van Exel – Pick 37

PG: Mo Williams – Pick 47

PG: Goren Dragic – Pick 45

SG: Danny Ainge – Pick 31

SF: (Jamal) James Wilkes – pick 50

SF: Cedric Ceballos – Pick 48

SF: Trevor Ariza – pick 44

PF: Rick Mahorn – Pick 35

PF: Cliff Robinson – Pick 36

PF: Luis Scola – Pick 56

PF: Carlos Boozer – Pick 35

C: Mark Eaton – Pick 72 (4th round – maybe does not fit if limited to first 60)

    C: Manute  Bol – Pick  31

    C: Marcin Gortat – Pick 57

    My starting five:

     PG: Nick Van Excel

SG: Manu Ginobili – Pick 57

    SF: Jamal Wilkes

    PF: Cliff Robinson

    C: Marc Gasol – Pick 48
