Good deal for Smart since no other team really offered him something he wanted to sign as a RFA but I really like it for both sides. He is the backbone of the leagues best defensive team and no other enviroment will give him the freedom to be what he is.

Have to say I like that the Celtics stayed put in the summer shoving they like what they have in their young core and didn’t try to shortcut anything in possible deals for Kawhi or whoever.

It will be interesting to see what they do with Kyrie entering his final year of the contract but that’s another story.

This team is special and I like Brown, Tatum and Smart as cornerstones of it.

I really think Kyrie won’t be back, I think they pay Rozier and have Smart as your back-up guard.

With Irving as an FA next summer and Rozier a RFA too I always felt that Celtics probably wanted Smart retained at a reasonable price. I’m a bit surprised no-one with real cap space didn’t commit an offer sheet to him but a lot of teams have their guards in situ already and probably felt Boston would match any reasonable offer.

Also despite Smart being an excellent player, he is more a role player than a lead guard plus has missed a fair chunk of games across his career so teams may have been reluctant to throw a huge deal his way.

I was surprised that Boston didn’t tie him up earlier but Ainge knows the score and as FA went on and cap space disappeared then Boston’s hand got stronger. There was always the chance that Smart could take a one year qualifying offer and become a FA in 2019 but having seen what happened to other guys I figure Smart lived up to his name and took the money on the table.
