Apparently they offered Boogie 2yrs/40M and Boogie didn’t take the offer and rightfully so. Then, the offer was called off and that’s where it led to him signing with the Warriors. Pelicans should have offered more tbh.

so a player worth 30-35 mil a year, gets offered 20 million a year coming off a torn achiles makes some sense. Then people and the media try to justify him taking 5 million a year as a smart move and he had no offers is ridculous so he could join 4 oter all stars an get a ring. There should be a limit on how low a star player like Cousins can sign for. A star player worth 30 million should not be allowed to take 5 mill mid level exception is insanity.

  So the league should force players who want to give up money to play on championship level teams to instead take more money to play on bad teams. Do you know how ridiculous that sounds?
  It’s funny how we always act like these guys are greedy and selfish, but when someone actually sacrifices to put themselves in a winning situation we suddenly flip the script around completely and bash them for doing that.

    if you are a business owner trying to improve your product. It remains to be seen whether the current status quo will drive viewership or suppress it as a result. I don’t blame players for doing what is allowable according to league rules, but as a viewer, I’d rather see competitive balance and that is on the league and ownership. If the league rules mandated you had to take more and he didn’t like it, I guess he could always go win championships on stacked teams in China or European leagues instead.

      So then how would that even work? Every player would have to take the maximum amount offered to them, regardless if it was a team they wanted to play for? Or would it only apply to players with a certain “status” in the league? Where would you draw the line? Do you think there is any chance in hell that would pass through collective bargaining?

        If they wanted parity and a competitive league, free agency should be a little less free, more like an auction. Yeah they go to whoever is willing to pay them the most. And no, the nba will never attempt it and the nbapa would never except it. Not until we see 10 all stars all decide to join up and take 10 mil each so they can walk through the rest of the league. Then they’ll admit there’s a problem, but the problem started a decade ago and it’s getting worse. I dont even think Cousins’ deal is that egregious, he’s coming off a serious injury and he will barely play, but the top players taking less than they are worth isn’t fair.

After finding out that he signed for 5 mill, we started hearing a few broadcasters playing the sympathy card saying that no one else offered him anything, so they don’t blame him for signing with the WARRIORS. They’ll say anything on tv now.. Like no one else would have signed him for 5.
Really?????? No one in the ENTIRE NBA would offer him 5 mill a year? That’s completely ridiculous. Even if they didn’t, it was the FIRST day of the signing period. Half of the NBA would have signed him for 12 mill a year if they even wildly dreamed that he would do.
They didn’t call because no one would believe that he would have signed for 15 mill, let alone 5.. He was talking in the 20s easily. His agent would have to call different organizations to say that they would go lower, so it is just another wimply excuse. I don’t even know if there is a starter in the NBA who just gets 5 a mill. I haven’t seen that number since the 80’s.
He WANTED to sign for the WARRIORS period.

Rightfully so? I disagree. He declined an extra $15 million this year and a gauranteed $20 million next year while rehabbing from an injury players have never returned from at 100% at the age of 27. Thats just stupid and his family must be upset with him.
To put this in perspective thats $15 million he left on the table and $20 million he can make back but is gambling with. We talk about salaries and contracts alot and kinda miss the point. The money is real lol. Its not a stat.
This isnt like when a healthy Tim Duncan took a $10 million dollar paycut at the age of 36 after three max contracts because the Spurs paid him back the $10 million to retire and sit out the 16-17 season. Its not one of those deals, this is just Cousins hustling himself.

  …Boogie has already made $80MM in his 9 years in the league. He obviously thought he could afford to bet on himself getting better offers next offseason when more teams have cap space. I’m fine with it.

    If he could get 2 years $40 mil I’m sure he could get 1 year $20 mil. At 2 years $40 mil he could likely sit out an entire season and rehab then return on the 2nd year of the contract and play at 100 percent instead of rushing a return for training camp and leaving himself prone to future injuries. Its not smart.
    Either way I shouldnt take it so personally none of us should to be honest. Demarcus Cousins has worked his entire life to put himself in a position to make this decision spiritually and financially and its really nobodies place to question him…

It was a fair offer. Short term but could have given $15 million more than what he gets with the Dubs. He could have given the Pelicans a chance to compete in the West.

Players do what they want. Of course, with Boogie dealing with a major injury, the Pelicans’ offer is pretty fair.
Now, you see so many NBA stars taking big checks but never winning a title that we can’t criticize Boogie for putting his dream to win a ring before the money. And if he decides to sign for $5 mill, it’s up to him.

So, free agents are not free to choose where they sign and for how much..?
Let me get this right..
Its ok to have the freedom to choose to own an automatic weapon despite no practical use for them and evidence children are repeatedly being killed BUT its not ok to have the freedom to refuse to be paid millions of dollars to play basketball for a winning team for fear of adults getting their feelings hurt?

  where to work in the US, but there are also antitrust laws preventing non-competitive, monopolistic competition. It’s not Boogie’s fault the NBA doesn’t have similar interventions in place.
