He has all the leverage, he just doesn’t have to commit to signing an extension with anybody besides the Lakers.. If this happens, Lebron is coming along 100 %. and they’d have cash to add PG13 too ! Lakers can offer picks, a combination of Lonzo/Kuzma/Ingram which would be a good deal for the Spurs honestly.. I want to see this team !!!

Why would the Lakers need to add these pieces?? Spurs don’t have leverage here. Kwani can pretty much tell any team he’s only signing with the Lakers and therfore no one but the Lakers would trade for him atleast other teams want a one year rental, which they won’t give up big peices for. Kwani and Lakers have control on what happens now..not the Spurs.

IIRC, Kawhi said he wants to go to LA. That could also mean the Clippers. So the Spurs do have some leverage. Also thinking back to when Kyrie wanted out, he didn’t get sent to any of the teams he listed (SAS was his top choice), so the precedent is there for the Spurs to not give a crap about where they send him.

Said the exact same thing.  He was traded not to the Lakers. Teams will roll the dice, mainly because they get his bird rights and can offer him more money. Like with Irving, the Celtics can offer him like 45 million more than any other team. So the Spurs will take the best deal. The Lakers won’t get him for 5 cents on the dollar. If they trade for him it will hurt.

Spurs get: Lonzo Ball OR Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma, Julius Randle OR Luol Deng (if Deng is included, Spurs will get a future First Round pick)

Lakers get: Kawhi and salary filler if needed (include a 2nd round pick if Deng is in the deal)

Julius is UFA, they won’t resign him to get PG and James, Spurs would have to take Deng salary also.

I meant that Randle would have to be part of an S&T in this scenario. It’s also possible a third team would be needed to unload Deng.

Randle is a restrictive free agent. Very hard to trade them under the new CBA, as he would be a BYC player. I know I’ve looked into trading Smart and its very hard, if almost not impossible when you don’t have cap space or trade exceptions.

Pop wont just give him away. He sat down with Aldridge and said they wouldnt trade him cos they wouldnt get value back, so i dont think Pop will cave quickly on Kawhi. Even if the Lakers are the only team he’s saying he’ll play for, the Spurs could force a third team in to get preferred assets. Id say San Antonio will explore other bad player contract out there and see which one they prefer. The Deng, 25 and Ball/Ingram package cant be the best one out there. The Spurs may rather #4 and Chandler Parsons and have a 3 way with the Griz. They may take Frank Ntilikina, #9 and Joakim Noah and just send him to his other preferred destination – New York. Other teams may take a risk for a year and see if he re-signs. Id like to see a decent team do this – Philly, Milwaukee, Jazz, Pels,  (if they had tradeable assets) or Nugs, but Boston would be the most likely place that can afford a rental.

If I’m Spurs, I won’t move him to Lakers unless I’m getting Lonzo, Ingram, and Hart/Kuzma back in the deal. Get Deng and his shitty contract out of my face.

I can’t see the Spurs trading him in conference especially to the Lakers. I heard Boston is interesting in him as well. This NBA offseason is going to be a goody! I’m really surprised a Popovich led team is having so much turmoil? I used to enjoy watching Kwahi play his defensive alone was a treat to watch. However I nevert thought he was a prima donna until now! He is falling in my villian catogory now.

     Grrrrr

    Ya’All do this every year.

You think every player wants to play for the Laker, but you have been one of the worst teams in the league for over half a decade.

Let me guess, this year you are going to get Leonard, PG, LeBron, and be able to keep Randle

Kawhi can say what he wants … Boston, Toronto, Philly and other teams that want to win a title now will make an offer for him. They know that championships can change minds.

And since LeBron probably doesn’t sign with the Lakers until they have Kawhi in hand, the Spurs actually have the leverage here.

No reason to rush,  they can wait. Especially if they want to mess up the Lakers free agency. They worse the lakers do in free agency the more desperate they will become to trade for him now, instead of waiting another year to sign him as free agent.  (Lakers have a horrible track record of signing free agents)
