David Fizdale has reportedly gained serious traction to be the new Knicks head man, according to Shams.

About the same time, Woj reported that the Phoenix Suns have hired Jazz assistant Igor Kokoskov to be their new HC. He will be the first Euro-born (Serbia) coach of an NBA team. The interesting thing about him is that he’s won Eurobasket (with Slovenia, a very small country) last summer with the likes od Doncic, Dragic and  Anthony Randolph (!) playing the key roles. Could this be the sign that the Suns could draft Luka ahead of everyone else?

Which hire do you think is better? I would be really happy if I was a fan of either franchise.

My sources are hearing chatter that the Suns are taking a long look at drafting Gelo Ball in the second round.

They may as well re-sign Charles Barkley too while they are at it then. He’d be a better signing. I am not kidding.

A lot will still depend on where the draft lottery puts teams in the draft but with Kokoskov going to the Suns the chances of them taking Doncic if he is available or trying to get in a position to draft him have likely increased.

The Suns will pick no lower than 4th and Doncic is currently 3rd on this site’s mock draft so they have a good chance of getting him. Would they pass on Ayton in particular if they got first pick I don’t know but if they thought they could get Doncic at say 3 they may look to trade down. But the risk would be the team at say 3 might say we’d take whoever is BPA there so force Suns to take Doncic first if they really wanted him or take Ayton at pass on Doncic.

The real fun could be if Suns did trade to drop to 3 and team moving up to 1 takes Ayton but team at 2 takes Doncic, do the Suns then take say Bagley at 3 or try to do a deal to get Doncic from #2 team. #2 Team could ask for what Suns got from team who moved up to take Ayton.

If the Knicks want to win they would be making a mistake to pass on Budenholzer. No one else’s resume really compares, and he’s the only guy in the running who has taken over a team and made it better than the sum of its parts.

These FIBA rules in relation to how guys can play for a national team are a joke.

I’m about as Slovenian as Anthony Randolph.

He’s a Slovenian citizen! It’s the same as Tim Duncan playing for the USA or Ibaka and Mirotic playing for Spain.

That’s Earth dude. It happens in every sport. It happens at every Olympics. Nothing to do with FIBA.

I like Igor for the Suns since I’m a jazz fan, but from an outsiders perspective I can’t help but notice the similarities in the past coaches Phoenix has hired recently and now I feel sorry for Igor. I mean look at this:

    • Jeff Hornacek, former Jazz player and assistant coach under Ty Corbin when coached the Jazz before Snyder was hired to replace him. Horneck was fired I believe in 2015 only lasting 1 year and a half. He went to coach the Knicks where, no surprise, was fired from again this season.
    • Earl Watson was hired to replace Hornacek. Watson also played for the Jazz just before he was hired to coach the Suns. He was then fired 3 games into this season!!! So he lasted even shorter than Hornacek
    • Now you hire Kokoskov who once again has as an affiliation with the Jazz as their current assistant coach under Quinn Snyder!!

I mean don’t get me wrong Igor will do his best with the Suns, and I’m sure they did their homework with this hiring, but I can’t help but notice the similarities and I’m starting to think that the Suns are relying too much on their neighbor, the Utah Jazz. I mean would it really be that hard to look somewhere else for a coach instead of just nearby Salt Lake City? It makes me wonder how long Kokoskov will last as the new Suns coach.

Igor was initially an assistant coach with Phoenix early on in his career. They’re simply bringing him home.

What a horrible connection to make. Hornacek was part of completely different brain trust and coaching staff even if on the same team. He has nothing in common with the current successful iteration of the Jazz. He was part of the coaching staff on one of the worst head coaches in the league Ty Corbin. Kokoskov is the lead assistant to one of the best head coaches in the league and he’s been assistant to some of the most well regarded coaches in the league. His pedigree in that regard is very strong. Oh and BTW I don’t even think Hornacek is necessarily a bad coach, he just had the misfortune of  being part of teams with some very questionable managements and ownerships that didn’t make his work any easier.

Watson was never coach for the Jazz, he just played for us. So what’s the connection here? you might as well have cited Billy Donovan as example of bad coach that once was drafted by the Jazz.

Unless you think there is something in the water in Salt Lake City that automatically makes anybody who passes through incapable of being a good coach, I don’t see why you even make that connection?

My only worry for Kokoskov is whether or not he will be left alone to do his job. Otherwise his coaching resume and pedigree are some of the best in the league and I see no reason why he couldn’t succeed with the Suns.

I wasn’t saying Jeff Hornacek or Earl Watson were bad coaches. You misunderstood. All I was saying was that to me it seems like the Suns are relying too much on their neighbor in these recent coach hirings. To me that’s not a good sign. I agree, I think Kokoskov will do great, I just feel bad knowing he is going to a bad situation that still had questionable management. I mean isn’t Ryan McDonough still the GM.

Apparently they offered Fizz the Suns job also but he decided on the Knicks.

I don’t know much about Igor but it could have something to do with Utah not dropping off a cliff when Gordan Hayward left and how well they have played in the playoffs. The Suns Roster also mirrors Utahs a little if you actually look at it. As sometimes assistants can actually be the brains of the unit.

I think the decisions were based more on location or job security… Suns have let coaches go after 2 seasons vs Knicks have kept their head coaches at least for 3 seasons. Which would give you more room to work with/job security.

But as far as rosters go the Suns have a way better, more promising potential and deeper team which is why I was sort of surprised Fizz took the Knicks with an injured K.P and not much else on it to work with.

If this does actually signal that Doncic is their guy, then I’m interested to see if he plays a LeBron type point (power) forward. They could go with Booker, Jackson, Warren, Doncic and a big guy (Chandler, Len, Bender). This may be ideal if they could also get their hands on Bamba, he’d be perfect as the 5 in that lineup.
