Opening night was a reminder of how awful NOLA’s roster truly is outside of Anthony Davis.

This post is about the two players who do have value. Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans. Both in the final years of their contracts.

NOLA let Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson walk for nothing, do they do the same for Jrue and Tyreke?

The general direction of New Orleans is obvious to even casual fans: you build around Anthony Davis. AD is locked down for 4 seasons, he can opt out of his fifth year.

So the rebuilding process has time in theory, but in reality, this team needs to look respectable by the end of this season if they want to attract free agents who opt-out. Or at the very least look respectable by the end of 2017 to get UFAs.

I’m not sure AD alone is enough to entice people to sign in New Orleans which is not really a basketball town. And if NOLA whiffs on signing free agents in 2017 or 2018, I don’t see how AD stays for the 2020 season unless they draft a superstar….

The N.O. roster is terrible.  I think they really messed up with the drafting of Heild over Jamal Murray.  Murray didn’t get much playing time for the nuggets, but is a shooter.  Heild really didn’t help space the floor.  I think T. Jones will be a welcome addition.  If they can play him and A.D. together that would be most effective.  Outside of those two, they have to gut the roster.  I think they must trade those two (Holiday and Evans) if possible.  Most FA are not lining up to sign with N.O.  They want to go to a place they can win, at least the really good ones.  If they can somehow get their hands on Brandon Knight from Phoenix that would be great and though he is not the best fit, it is a step in the right direction.

Unless they can get an all-star calliber player for Tyreke & Jrue, they should wait it out. Some teams may want those contracts to free up cap space. Some may decline because they think the cap bump next year is enough. Pelicans need to move the contracts of Asik & Solomon Hill somehow as well. Free up cap space for free agency and also collect picks.

Both Reke and Jrue are on nice expiring deals and if any contender was looking to add a player for the play off run around deadline day then they could easily throw a later first rounder at it, so NOP could get some return for them.

Any trade which would bring longer contracted talent into NOP would have to be carefully considered, as they may well want as much cap space as possible for next summer. Another year in the lottery for NOP wouldn’t be a disaster, they have their Franchise player in The Brow, Buddy Hield can develop and if they stand a chance of adding another top 10 pick next summer then a core is there. If they come up lucky in the draft lottery and get a shot at a real elite player then that is a nice bonus.

Their roster is truly a disaster, and I love Anthony Davis but I don’t know if he is someone you should build around, I’m starting to see him as a stat stuffing complimentary player. Hopefully they can trade holiday and tyrekes contract and bring in a superstar that can really control the game. But this team needs so much they can honestly go in any direction from here.

I wouldn’t mind seeing if they can get Brandon Knight from the Suns.  Also Rudy Gay is possibly gone from Sacramento.

5 Moves to get Pelicans back into the playoffs or looking respectable(at least)

First move fire that idiot of a gm he has no basketball knowledge what so ever…Bringing in someone that knows what to actually do.

He fired Monty williams before he even had a clear direction plan…

He hired a coach who the personel don’t fit.

He resigns players that don’t fit next to A.D

    Second move

Tank this season and rest A.D(limit minutes or rest games) get another top 6 pick

    Third move:

Keep Jrue holiday if you can for a reasonable price(he would be a nice Pg for off the bench)

let Tyreeke go assuming you can’t get anything for him this season-preferably another first round pick and expiring contract.

    Fourth move:

Form an acutal plan/timeline for building a team around A.D’s skill set see what Houston did this year. Put a team and coach that both fit hardens strengths(though defensively they may need work) and trying to maximize his skill set. Whether or not this works time will tell but at least they are trying to maximize hardens prime years..

Fifth move: Draft smarter/Fire current scouts-if they are recommend the past moves to the GM..

2012 nba draft-Austin rivers at 10- major reach could have had: Meyers leonard(could have been a nice stretch 4),Jeremy lamb,Evan Fournier just to name a few..

2013 nba draft traded pick away for Jrue H -Could have had a lot of talented players I also wouldn’t have taken Noel.- C.J Mcollum,Giannis,Steven adams to name a few..

2014 nba draft I am assuming this pick was part of the Jrue holiday trade..Which they could have taken

    Rodney hood,Elfrid Payton,Zach lavine

2015 nba draft they traded this for Omir Asik and cash..Which they could have taken Boby portis..

2016  nba draft: Buddy hield- The only other move they could have made here in this week draft was taking Jamal Murray which personally I think better suits Nola better than Hield and gives you a longer career due to being younger..

So just imagine this for a second this is your N.O pelicans(assuming the players still played at same level)

AD,Meyers leonard,Giannis,Evan Fournier and Elfrid payton.

    or

    A.D,Bobby portis,Rodney hood,C.J and Tyreeke

    or

    Steve Adams,A.D,Giannis,Evan F and Elfrid

    or

    A.D,Meyers,Giannis,Zach lavine and Tyreeke

This shows how bad N.O has drafted or how careless they were with picks..

Final move: Hire a new conditioning/medical staff as the team always seems to be breaking down..Hopefully this will help keep good players on the court longer..

Its never to late to make these simple moves see minesota post Kahn: He was as bad as Demps in my eyes:

Kahn screwed up the T-wolves by:

    Overpaying for Pek,

Drafting Wes johnson over Cousins(who I would have cleared players out to have on my team thats how good he was straight out of the gates.

    Drafting Johnny flynn over Curry..

    Signing Darko Milic

    Hiring Kurt Rambis..

Not giving k-love the contract he wanted.

The Flip and Thibs happened and the t-wolves are back on the positive side of things with: Towns,Wiggins,Lavine,Dunn and Rubio..

So this shows there is hope for N.O..
